Surveying The Damage: Academic Library Serial Cancellations 1987 Through 1990, Tina E. Chrzastowski, Karen A. Schmidt

Staff publications, research, and presentations

A longitudinal study of serial cancellations was conducted by analyzing the cancellation lists between 1987 and 1990 from five midwestern libraries of the Association of Research Libraries. The study was designed to test the primary hypothesis that large academic libraries, faced with the same negative impacts on their budgets, are cancelling the same or similar types of serials. This hypothesis was disproved. Results of the study showed that, of 6,503 cancelled titles, only 281 (4 percent) were cancelled at more than one library, resulting in 6,222 (96 percent) unique title cancellations within this survey. Results also provide an overall profile …

The Mid-America Law School Library Consortium Catalog On Cd-Rom, Richard C. Amelung

All Faculty Scholarship

The Mid-America Law School Library Consortium celebrated the tenth anniversary of its founding in 1991. Although preceded by informal meetings of law school deans and librarians in the late 1970s, the Consortium was formally constituted in 1981 as a regional group of law school libraries interested primarily in slowing the rise of expenses through greater cooperation and resource sharing. At the time the Union Catalog project was beginning, the group consisted of eighteen institutions in seven states. The Consortium included all accredited law schools in six of the seven states represented. [1]

The guiding philosophy of cooperation and resource sharing …

Current Periodicals: Subject Access The Mac Way, Connie Foster

DLTS Faculty Publications

At Western Kentucky University, the Library uses a Macintosh to filter and edit information on current serials to produce a periodicals guide for faculty and students. This tool has proven useful in collections development, reference and serials control within the Library. It has also provided the Library with a means to communicate to the academic community the extent of serials holdings in specific disciplines. Additionally, the Library has used the information within the guide to generate other lists of serials holdings for its patrons.

Beilstein And Gmelin: Keep Or Cancel, Michael Knee

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the decision-making process employed at an academic library to evaluate continuing commitments to two important reference sources in chemistry: Beilstein and Gmelin. A survey was used to ascertain regional subscribers for a potential resource-sharing agreement. A second survey was conducted to determine the status of the printed handbooks and usage of the online equivalents at institutions with similar chemistry departments. Results showed half of the surveyed libraries had standing orders for Beilstein and 35% had standing orders for Gmelin. The negotiation process between the Library and the Chemistry Department is outlined. The Chemistry Department elected …

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang Jan 1992

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang

Publications and Research

"The lesbian and gay press has shaped and reflected the rise of gay and lesbian liberation," Dan Tsang and Polly Thistlethwaite wrote in the introduction to the 'Lesbian and Gay' section of Katzes' 1992 edition of Magazines for Libraries. This title review of the queer periodicals of the day was intended to serve as a guide and justification for 'mainstream' libraries' collection building. The number and range of titles in Thistlethwaite and Tsang's collaborative entries (1989, 1992, and 1995) far exceeded any mainstream library collection known to either of the authors who were nevertheless hopeful that libraries would expand …
