A Study Of The Metadata Creation Behavior Of Different User Groups On The Internet, Jin Zhang, Iris Jastram Jan 2006

A Study Of The Metadata Creation Behavior Of Different User Groups On The Internet, Jin Zhang, Iris Jastram

Staff and Faculty Work

Metadata is designed to improve information organization and information retrieval effectiveness and efficiency on the Internet. The way web publishers respond to metadata and the way they use it when publishing their web pages, however, is still a mystery. The authors of this paper aim to solve this mystery by defining different professional publisher groups, examining the behaviors of these user groups, and identifying the characteristics of their metadata use. This study will enhance the current understanding of metadata application behavior and provide evidence useful to researchers, web publishers, and search engine designers.

Marc Vs Xml, Peter A. Zuber Dec 2005

Marc Vs Xml, Peter A. Zuber

Faculty Publications

Some of the issues in discussion between MARC and XML deal with the desire to expand the content of the bibliographic record. An often-cited example is the library that wishes to enrich the current electronic record with a table of contents. Although a table of contents inclusion is actually possible with the MARC record, it is certainly not an ideal platform for such content. The MARC record is described as being a "flat" record, meaning it does not have a hierarchal nature. As such, it is a poor candidate for hierarchal structures such as a table of contents. A discussion …

Quelques Remarques Sur Les Belgicismes Métalinguistiques, Jean-Nicolas De Surmont Dec 2005

Quelques Remarques Sur Les Belgicismes Métalinguistiques, Jean-Nicolas De Surmont

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Of all Belgicisms, only a few have metalinguistic connotation and they have to be considered of special interest in this respect, even if the literature on French in Belgium has not addressed this issue specifically. This essay proposes some observations on these few important words, supported by recent lexicographical descriptions and data obtained through research undertaken in collaboration with Michel Francard of the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium).

Rehabilitating Killer Serials: An Automated Strategy For Maintaining E-Journal Metadata, David Banush, Martin Kurth, Jean M. Pajerek Jul 2005

Rehabilitating Killer Serials: An Automated Strategy For Maintaining E-Journal Metadata, David Banush, Martin Kurth, Jean M. Pajerek

Cornell Law Librarians' Publications

Cornell University Library (CUL) has developed a largely automated method for providing title-level catalog access to electronic journals made available through aggregator packages. CUL's technique for automated e-journal record creation and maintenance relies largely on the conversion of externally supplied metadata into streamlined, abbreviated-level MARC records. Unlike the Cooperative Online Serials Cataloging Program's recently implemented 'aggregator-neutral' approach to e-journal cataloging, CUL's method involves the creation of a separate bibliographic record for each version of an e-journal title in order to facilitate automated record maintenance. An indexed local field indicates the aggregation to which each title belongs and enables machine manipulation …

Cataloging The Congressional Serial Set, Aimée C. Quinn Jan 2005

Cataloging The Congressional Serial Set, Aimée C. Quinn

Library Scholarship

Many librarians question the usefulness of the traditional cataloging of difficult historic sets in a time when more and more information moves either to the Internet or is digitized outright. One of the most challenging sets to catalog is the United States Congressional Serial Set, a 14,000+ (and growing) mega serial comprised of five monographic sub-series. The Congressional Serial Set is an anomaly since it is both monographic and serial in nature. This article examines the intricacies in cataloging government publications in an electronic atmosphere using one House document in the Serial Set as a guide and examines the two …

Tren Dissertations Jan 2005

Tren Dissertations

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Theological Research Exchange Network (TREN) provides a gold-mine of information for theological libraries but has previously made this information primarily available in microfiche format. Librarians and computer personnel at Crown College in Minnesota worked together with TREN to make this information available in full-text electronic format through the library online catalog. This article explains the process so other interested librarians can work with TREN to do the same.
