The author discusses a proactive library recruitment strategy based on his experience at Kansas State University Libraries. He identifies two main areas of concern in hiring librarians including the length of the hiring process and the quality of candidates. He also cites the major elements of a proactive library recruitment strategy such as recruiting the right talent and creating a new recruitment team.

If you have ever had to seek technical information, you have probably run into an information access roadblock or a pay-wall. This is a major issue for our students as they leave our universities and our subscription resources and move on to become practitioners of their field. Creative Collaboration: Maximizing Resources For Multi-Collection Exhibits, Jillian M. Slater, Nichole M. Rustad

This presentation illustrates the collaborative, multi-format approach used in preparing an exhibit of archival materials on the 1913 Dayton flood at the University of Dayton Libraries. Originally formed due to the absence of a University Archivist, the small planning committee was able to combine areas of expertise including archives, history, graphic design, video/audio production, marketing, and digitization. The collaborative process facilitated a creative approach resulting in a unique, interactive exhibit utilizing audio, video, original materials, reproductions, a permanent digital component, and a discussion panel event. The presenters will also discuss how the planning committee maximized available resources (without a budget) …

Data Mining The Harness Track And Predicting Outcomes, Robert P. Schumaker

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper presented the S&C Racing system that uses Support Vector Regression (SVR) to predict harness race finishes and analyzed it on fifteen months of data from Northfield Park. We found that our system outperforms the most common betting strategies of wagering on the favorites and the mathematical arbitrage Dr. Z system in five of the seven wager types tested. This work would suggest that an informational inequality exists within the harness racing market that is not apparent to domain experts.

Patron-Driven Acquisition Optimization At Liberty University, Erin Crane, Lori Snyder

In 2010 Liberty University began a Patron-Driven Acquisition pilot program with ebrary. Since then, the program has grown dramatically. The presenters describe how the library uses past usage data to create a predictive formula for ebook use. New ebook titles were added to the program based on formula selections. Success of the formula was evaluated, and overall the results are positive. The presenters also explain how the library handles the purchasing and cataloging of the ebooks.

On April 1^st, 2013, University Libraries celebrated the arrival of the three millionth volume in the largest library collection in the state. The ceremonial presentation of the book was held in the Zimmerman Library West Wing.

The official three millionth volume “The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid, the Noted Desperado of the Southwest, Whose Deeds of Daring and Blood Made his Name a Terror in New Mexico, Arizona and Northern Mexico” has been donated by the William A. Keleher Family. It was written by Pat Garrett, Sheriff of Lincoln County and published in 1882. The book is …

California State University, San Bernardino launched its’ first ever library laptop lending program in the fall of 2012. During research into policy creation and technical implementation questions of a more general nature emerged. Is the need for library provided laptops declining? Are library provided tablet computers such as iPads replacing laptops? Are libraries providing devices to access eBooks? This session will present two case studies at CSU, San Bernardino, and the preliminary results of a survey into digital device lending by libraries. In this Introduction to Data Science eBook, a series of data problems of increasing complexity is used to illustrate the skills and capabilities needed by data scientists. The open source data analysis program known as "R" and its graphical user interface companion "R-Studio" are used to work with real data examples to illustrate both the challenges of data science and some of the techniques used to address those challenges. To the greatest extent possible, real datasets reflecting important contemporary issues are used as the basis of the discussions.
