The Elements Of Web Communication (For Amateurs), Joshua Neds-Fox

Library Scholarly Publications

Presentation given at the Michigan Library Association Annual Conference 2015, October 28th, in Novi, Michigan.

"Writing for the web is not the same as writing for other media. But your library website content is written by your library staff, who may be neither writers nor web professionals. This session will explore everyday strategies to improve your approach to writing for the web. Your web content will be more readable, your site will be more usable, and you will be more confident in your ability to reach patrons online."

What's New In Preservation At Musselman Library: Student Workers And The Beauty Of The Book, Carolyn Sautter, Mary Wootton

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Musselman Library's Special Collections and College Archives at Gettysburg College involves student workers and interns in our preservation and conservation efforts. The recent addition to the staff of a half-time conservator position has opened up new avenues for training. This has also resulted in additional access points for our students, faculty and other researchers to interact with our collections. This presentation discusses our preservation activities and our new digital collection The Beauty of the Book. It also illustrates how we have engaged student workers in conservation and enhanced cataloging description projects giving them a deeper appreciation for and understanding …

Lgbtq & You: Connecting Collections With The Campus Community, Mallory R. Jallas, Amy E. Ward

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Musselman Library’s LGBTQ Research Guide, established in 2012, is a resource that goes beyond connecting the library’s collections with the campus community and providing access. This research guide has generated opportunities to grow campus partnerships, foster a student’s interest in librarianship, and create a gateway for research and learning in the LGBTQ community that goes beyond the classroom. In our presentation we will outline the project from its early days as a student project to its current life as collaboration between the library and Gettysburg Colleges’ Office of LGBTQA Advocacy & Education.

I Want All The Words! How Gestalt Principles And Plain Language Can Help You Become An Effective Document Designer, Jennifer M. Turner, Jessica Schomberg

Library Services Publications

Librarians across library types and departments frequently provide training materials to each other, library technicians, and student workers. For these materials to be effective, they must contain accurate information and should also follow guidelines for usable document design. Good design makes documents easier to use, helps documents stand out from other pieces of information, and lends credibility to document creators. A few simple tips, such as following Gestalt principles and using plain language, can improve document usability. The presenters will demonstrate how making these and other changes will improve the accessibility and functionality of library training materials. They will also …

Rebooting A Technical Writing Course: Control Instructional Design, Alt Information Literacy, And Delete Non-Collaboration, Kelly Diamond, Gregg Thumm

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Members of this panel, an instructional design librarian and a teaching faculty member, began collaborating in summer 2014 to revise and redesign English 305: Scientific and Technical Writing; the faculty instructor wanted to improve this course by redesigning it based on instructional design principles, but also to include more information literacy instruction into this online course.

This panel will discuss faculty’s perceived problems with the initial version of the class, including lack of student participation and poor choices of research materials for assignments.
