Short Subjects: Entropy And Archival Disorder, Terry Abraham
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
In Spite of its direct impact on archival science, the concept of entropy has never been assimilated into the rich body of archival theory. This is undoubtedly the result of its apparent negative impact on archival activities. Entropy, according to a physicist friend of Ben Ross Schneider (author of Travels in computerland), "means ...that you can't win, you can't break even, and you can't get out of the game... " And the game is "man versus chaos."

Group Processing: Planning And Management Strategies, William E. Brown Jr.
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Group processing projects present a series of challenges which demand a wide range of technical and administrative skills from archivists. These are met with varying degrees of success. Often, this is the first opportunity for an archivist to test his knowledge and skills in a supervisory position. Professionals who lack the necessary complement of skills, or who are unable to blend these skills to fit the needs of a project, operate at a distinct disadvantage for themselves and their employers. The following discussion of group processing components outlines some of the advantages and disadvantages associated with each phase and describes …

Tablets And Temples: Documents In Republican Rome, Phyllis Culham
Tablets And Temples: Documents In Republican Rome, Phyllis Culham
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
It has long been taken for granted that the Roman Republic, just like the elective governments of today, placed state papers in a repository to preserve them for consultation. This is assumed both in undergraduate textbooks in Roman history and in the most respected reference works used by specialists in the field. Neither the basic texts nor the standard references hesitate to use the term archive in describing this repository. That term, in fact, is Greek and was never used by the classical Romans to describe any of their own institutions. The anachronistic use of the word in reference to …

The current century replete with a vast plethora of technology and consumer paraphernalia has witnessed the creation of the multimedia collection. The records of a person, family or organization are no longer restricted to the traditional correspondence, diaries, financial ledgers, deeds of ownership, and certificates of birth, marriage, and death but include items of a more contemporary format such as audio and video tapes, films, photographs, sound recordings, and possibly anything else that has been invented in the last fifty years. This situation has become more pronounced with materials deliberately assembled by a collector specializing in a particular subject area. …

Over the past few years it seems impossible to open an archival journal and not read about the need for archivists to develop highly specific skills. A current example is the call insisting that we, as a profession, develop planning and managerial talents. Archivists have been challenged not merely to plan and manage, but to plan well, and manage our resources even better. Conservation is a second example of an area where proponents have spoken at length about the need for archivists to develop highly specific aptitudes. The need within an archives for an appreciation of abilities such as planning …

Archives By Degree: Personal Perspectives On Academic Preparation For The Archival Profession, Virginia J.H. Cain, Anita K. Delaries, David E. Alsobrook, Christopher Ann Paton

The consideration of the question of the appropriate level and type of education and training for professional archivists is not an issue new to archival literature nor to the agendas of meetings of archival organizations. Articles published in national and regional journals and papers presented at national and regional gatherings have addressed this question many times over the years, but as yet no definite and bonding answers or agenda for action have emerged.

The Presidential Libraries System Study: The Carter Project's Experience, Robert D. Bohanan
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Archivists and records managers traditionally have arranged manuscripts according to the principle of provenance, resisting attempts to cross-reference or subject catalog archival materials. They have argued that cross-referencing is doomed to failure due to the lack of commonly agreed upon subject descriptors (which librarians call authority files) and to the sheer size of the undertaking. Archives are traditionally understaffed, and the hours involved in cross-referencing by subject prohibit such undertakings. On the other hand, researchers and information managers have long expressed the desire for subject access to information which may be dispersed throughout separate manuscript collections in the same repository …
