Factors Associated With The Implementation Of The Protocols For Native American Archival Materials: An Exploratory Study, Kimberly D. Anderson (Kliewer)

This study examines motivations for adopting the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials (PNAAM), the factors that might impact implementation of PNAAM in practice, and an exploration of how and why new ethical standards are accepted or rejected. The researcher conducted a survey in 2023 of archivists and/or memory workers working at non-Tribal institutions that have some materials about Indigenous people. The study was designed around the respondent’s perceptions of authority, skills, knowledge, relationships, and resources both as individuals and within their repositories. The paper will highlight ongoing work at three cultural heritage institutions in northern Ohio (Bowling Green State University, Kent State University, and the Lakeside Heritage Society) to extend the work begun during grant-funded digital projects beyond the term of a grant. Sustaining related work after the grant funding period has expired is a concern for many practitioners and to date, is a topic that has not been discussed in-depth in the literature. Bringing Servicewomen Into Focus: Exploring Methods For Indexing Second World War Archival Photographs At Library And Archives Canada, Rebecca Murray

The Second World War saw women officially serving in the Canadian military in capacities other than nursing, breaking into roles historically held by men. The service of over fifty thousand Canadian women is documented in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada; photographs that allow historians to widen the lens on the traditional narrative, but only if they can find them. This article presents two methods for indexing archival photographs and highlights the particular challenges of identifying servicewomen in the archival record and bringing our aunties and grandmas into focus.

Organizational change is challenging. At the heart of this challenge is an attachment to the status quo. Both employees and managers tend to prefer the status quo because it is known and, unless shown otherwise, enables them to successfully accomplish their responsibilities. They often use tradition as a way to maintain the status quo. This case study provides an example of organizational change in the Brigham Young University (BYU) Library and discusses how tradition was used to both promote and resist change.

The Metadata Justice in Oklahoma Libraries & Archives Symposium is an event focused on improving metadata and description for historically overlooked communities in library and archival collections. This event is a result of collaboration between people working in libraries and archives in an environment that has traditionally kept library and archives work separate. Two members of the 2023 Planning Team discuss the symposium’s inception, event logistics, successes, opportunities for growth, and the impact that this symposium has on the Oklahoma library and archives community.

“Forget The Rest ...”: Notes On Magnetic Tape And Other Antiquated Media As Archives Of Afro-Atlantic Liturgy, David Font-Navarrete

The virtuosic complexity of Afro-Cuban orisha music has led scholars and artists to enshrine it as a “classical” tradition, and it has become one of most iconic and closely-studied sacred music traditions of the historical Afro-Atlantic. This essay traces the legacies of several analog-era multimedia technologies in orisha music traditions: reel-to-reel and cassette tapes; limited edition and out-of-print books and phonograph discs; ephemeral texts such as album liner notes; and photographic negatives, prints, and slides. Communication Studies Student Research

Photographer Clinton Wright documented the everyday lives and experiences of the African American community in Las Vegas' Historic Westside from 1964 to 1971. He later donated his collection of photographic negatives to the Special Collections and Archives at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries. Although the collection is open to the public, physical access is limited to the Special Collections Reading Room, which may restrict usability for some researchers and community members. This project highlights the importance of digitization and metadata workflows in improving access to and visibility of archival materials.

This chapter focuses on the Central Washington University Archives and Special Collections (CWUASC) located in Kittitas County, a rural area of Washington State. The repository strives to provide access to all users, regardless of modality. The driving question behind this research was what can be improved or modified to ensure patrons with disabilities can access the collections? The purpose of this chapter is to describe the process of recruiting two undergraduate students who identify as disabled to conduct an accessibility audit of the archives’ physical space open to patrons and the library it is housed in. Georgia is a geographically diverse state with a growing population. Its vast and varied natural, cultural, and historic (NCH) resources contribute significantly to the state’s economy, yet they are at risk of damage from disasters. The awareness of the need for emergency planning for NCH collections has grown over the past three decades. A Historical Framework Of The Qualitative Analysis Of Social Media For Libraries And Archives, Kheir Fakhreldin

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Since the widespread adoption of social media in the 2010s, many libraries and archives have begun to use social media engagement as part of their outreach. While likes, retweets, and follows can be easily measured, there are also qualitative aspects of social media engagement that can illuminate other aspects of repositories' social media communication with their users. This article looks at historical trends in qualitative analysis of social media and suggests ways in which libraries and archives can incorporate qualitative analysis into their social media strategy.
