The purpose of this project was to give forests in Region 1 of the USFS baseline information on which to build forest-specific needs assessments. This included outfitter supply and demand, national and regional recreation trends, and an outfitter/guide need spectrum. This was accomplished in three phases and this report details the objectives, methods, and results for each phase.

An evaluation of the Missoula Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) website was undertaken in an effort to provide the Missoula CVB with some measure of the effectiveness of its website in attracting and informing visitors to the Missoula area. A method often used in an attempt to measure tourism marketing effectiveness is a conversion study. However, there are some problems with traditional conversion studies which motivated the use of a different method for this study. The report describes conversion studies, explains some of the associated shortcomings, and details the methods used to evaluate the Missoula CVB website.

This report looks at the expenditure profiles and the marketing responsiveness of nonresident travelers to Montana, and is based on data collected for the nonresident survey in 2005. The goal of this information is to provide a detailed look at visitor groups including money spent by each group in Montana. In addition to analyzing by visitor group, the report separates visitor groups by the quarter in which they visited Montana, state of residence, purpose of travel, and main Montana attraction. Finally, readers can find information on expenditures by United States travel regions.

This report converts zip codes of nonresident visitors to Montana into 210 Designated Market Areas and provides an investigation of four population segments. The first analysis looks at DMA representation divided by visitors’ primary reason for being in Montana with vacationers as the primary focus. The second section looks at repeat and first time vacationers to Montana while the third subset explores visitors who indicated that at least one reason for their trip to Montana was to either purchase property or visit a second home or condo. Public Recreation And Neighborhood Sense Of Community: An Exploration Of A Hypothesized Relationship, Svetoslav D. Gueorguiev, Edwin Gómez, Eddie Hill

This study explores the relationship between park attributes (perceived safety and perceived benefits) and their relationship to sense of community in urban neighborhoods. The study finds that the perception of benefits derived from park use has a direct relationship with sense of community, and that park safety is indirectly related to sense of community, with the perception of park benefits mediating the relationship between park safety and sense of community. Theoretical and practical considerations are discussed.

This report highlights travel corridors and characteristics of Montana vacationers. Seven distinct groups of people based on their entry and exit points to Montana emerged from the data. Each group is described in terms of demographics, attractions to the state, activities engaged in while visiting and how many of each group visited Montana by quarter.

Leisure Constraints Ethnic Factors And Recreation Participation: A Case Study Of The Latino Population In Manassas Park, Virginia, Gregory T. Jones

The purpose of this research was to study the leisure constraints and ethnic factors that affect recreational use among Latinos in the City of Manassas Park. Respondents were mailed a questionnaire to the City of Manassas Park. The questionnaires were composed of questions pertaining to acculturation, values, discrimination, subcultural identity, perceived recreation benefits, constraints to park use, constraints to desired leisure activities, socio-economic status, program usage, and park usage. Confirmatory factor analyses identified six factors for recreational use: acculturation, discrimination, subcultural identity, derived benefits, park use constraints, and individual activity constraints. This report looks at how the economy of Montana and the entire Mountain West has been changing since the 1970s. Extractive natural resource industries are no longer as important to the economy as they may once have been. Other industries, services in particular, have become relatively more important in terms of employment and earnings in the state. Nonresident travel accounts for 7.5% of total employment (over 45,900 jobs) in Montana. An Exploration Of The Influence Of Recreation Benefits And Use Of Public Parks: The Impact On Sense Of Community In Neighborhoods, Svetoslav Dimov Gueorguiev

The purpose of the present study was to explore what influence public parks have on the sense of community of the residents living near parks. Respondents were chosen from within the service area (0.5 miles) of five parks in Norfolk, VA They rated their park experiences and answered sense of community and demographic questions. Confirmatory factor analysis identified five different dimensions in measuring the SOC levels. Correlation and regression analyses identified the extent of the influence that recreation participation had on sense of community of residents.
