In each of the past three strategic plans for Montana’s Travel and Tourism Industry, one goal has been to understand and then facilitate improved attitudes toward tourism in the state. ITRR has contributed to the understanding of resident attitudes by polling Montana residents about their attitudes and opinions regarding tourism since 1991. This report looks at the trends of these attitudes over the past 17 years.

Statewide Vacationers To Montana: Are They Geotravelers? , Dylan Boyle, Norma P. Nickerson

Nonresident vacationers in Montana were surveyed concerning their geotraveler behaviors as well as what was important to them while traveling in Montana. The study found that vacationers do exhibit geotraveler tendencies and can be divided into strong and moderate geotravelers. Strong geotravelers represent 34 percent of vacationers, and they were the youngest, most educated, and most affluent group.

The DIT-ACHIEV Model is a model of sustainable tourism indicators developed in a previous research project undertaken by the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism, Dublin Institute of Technology. The indicators represent six fields of interest – Administration, Community, Heritage, Infrastructure, Enterprise and Visitor (Flanagan et al, 2007). This current research addresses the implementation of the DIT- ACHIEV model in an Irish tourism destination, with the objective to assess whether it can be implemented by the local community in any tourism destination.

Seeking to understand the relationship between Title IX and its impact on a select group of its contemporary beneficiaries, the purpose of this study was to determine the influence of Title IX on the personal and professional biographies of 8 early career female club volleyball coaches. This study utilized a modified case study design featuring constant comparison data analysis. Data were collected using a qualitative interview technique with each of the candidate’s interviews subdivided into four distinct sections. Everyone experiences leisure differently but, for people who excel in a chosen field, a hobby can become a serious goal-oriented leisure pursuit. Many talented people, however, fail to reach their leisure goals due to constraints. This study explored individual life experiences of serious leisure participants. It focused on the lived experiences of individual event [horse] riders and opera singers who successfully negotiated their constraints, enabling them to reach their high performance goals.

Western Montana and the Bismarck area of North Dakota were the target areas for the Montana Office of Tourism's summer, 2009 marketing campaign highlighting Montana's High Plains, including the attractions, activities and landscape found in eastern Montana. This study evaluated the awareness of the High Plains amongst residents of these two areas and, aditionally, assessed their perceptions of the High Plains as a place to visit.

A 2001 report by the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) indicated there is likely to be a shortage of sport officials in the near future. This report also indicated that soccer and field hockey were already struggling to find officials as early as 2001. The purpose of this article is to identify researched recruitment and retention issues of sports officials; ways to retain current officials; and strategies to help recruit new officials.

This report is part of a series that examines visitors in gateway communities of both Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks with the purpose of understanding the lifestyle, habits, values, demographics and travel characteristics of visitors to the parks. This report details only the results of Yellowstone visitors and presents the results by the season in which the visitors were intercepted (spring, summer and fall, 2008). The findings suggest that visitors to Yellowstone do not differ significantly, regardless of season of visitation, in their lifestyles, habits, preferred experiences or values.

Despite the fact that the experiential perspective has had a profound impact on the way we view leisure behaviour, experiential matters have been renounced for being overtly subjective. As a corollary, experiential matters have been castigated for their inability to offer concrete criteria for leisure policy and the provisions of services. This paper argues that this dismissal of experiential matters is based on an overinflated dichotomy – the fact/value dichotomy – and that, by valorising objectivist approaches to managing leisure resources, experiential matters have become nothing more than a policy-making faux pas. Tourism marketers often have a difficult time trying to weigh the costs and benefits of exhibiting at consumer shows. What defines success at a consumer show is different for each exhibitor, so a show that has great potential for one exhibitor may not be worth the effort and expense for another. This paper provides an overview of the non-gaming nightlife entertainment sector of Las Vegas resort-casinos. Three qualitative interviews with executives of The Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, The Monte Carlo Las Vegas Resort and Casino, and The Mirage Las Vegas were conducted to examine their perceptions and needs in the industry. Interviews of nonresident repeat vacationers to Montana told the story of their very first visit to Montana. Seventy percent came to Montana and visited either Yellowstone or Glacier National Park. Thirty percent came originally for business, VFR, or passing through. All of these visitors felt the need to return to Montana. This report discusses the first and subsequent visits to Montana. Marketing implications of this study suggest that Yellowstone, specifically, and Glacier secondly, should be used to draw first time visitors to Montana. Travel patterns of nonresidents who visited both Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks on their trip to Montana were analyzed for this study. Results showed a number of travel patterns emerged, but two patterns, the open loop and the linear patterns, were predominate. Specifically, Montana's 2008-2012 Strategic Plan for Tourism and Recreation, Objective 10.5.c. says: “Continue regular monitoring of Montanans’ opinions about tourism and recreation.” This objective has a high priority designation. The Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research (ITRR) has contributed to the understanding of resident attitudes by polling Montana residents about their attitudes and opinions regarding tourism since 1991.

Geotourism is a new niche segment of sustainable tourism focused on sustaining and enhancing the geographical character of a place. The purpose of this study was to answer the question: "to what degree do visitors in the 'Crown of the Continent' share the values of geotourism?" Visitors to sites on National Geographic's Crown of the Continent geotourism mapguide were intercepted and asked to fill out a survey regarding their travel values.
