Odontal analysis, specifically combined with forensic science and anthropology, allows for age and sex estimations, the identification of remains, and an in-depth historical account of human history. Terminal ballistics, also called wound ballistics, is a field of ballistics that studies the projectile behaviour upon impact with a target. While the physical damage induced by the projectiles (typically bullets) and its medical treatment is well-researched, the deformation that the projectile itself undergoes is often underestimated in importance, and the research on this topic is lacking, although such changes can be a valuable source of forensic evidence. According to the FBI, to date, there are more than 400,000 untested sexual assault kits nationwide. While this is a huge issue that cannot be solved overnight, continual improvements and changes are needed to reduce and hopefully eliminate the backlog.

This research examines work going on nationwide and aims to better understand the backlog issues specifically in Pennsylvania. Furthermore, the research examines a program utilized by the law enforcement community that garnered necessary resources. Numerous federal funding opportunities offer the forensic science and law enforcement communities valuable resources needed to test the kits, but issues still remain.
