Purification And Properties Of Nadh-Dependent 5,10-Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (Metf) From Escherichia Coli, Christal A. Sheppard, Elizabeth E. Trimmer, Rowena G. Matthews Feb 1999

Purification And Properties Of Nadh-Dependent 5,10-Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (Metf) From Escherichia Coli, Christal A. Sheppard, Elizabeth E. Trimmer, Rowena G. Matthews

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

A K-12 strain of Escherichia coli that overproduces methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MetF) has been constructed, and the enzyme has been purified to apparent homogeneity. A plasmid specifying MetF with six histidine residues added to the C terminus has been used to purify histidine-tagged MetF to homogeneity in a single step by affinity chromatography on nickel-agarose, yielding a preparation with specific activity comparable to that of the unmodified enzyme. The native protein comprises four identical 33-kDa subunits, each of which contains a molecule of noncovalently bound flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). No additional cofactors or metals have been detected. The purified enzyme catalyzes …

Nevada's High Technology Crime Task Force, Dorinda A. Hollenbeck Feb 1999

Nevada's High Technology Crime Task Force, Dorinda A. Hollenbeck

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

With the dramatic advances in computer technology in recent decades, the increase of crimes committed using high technology has skyrocketed. Losses to corporations and governmental agencies have totalled millions if not billions of dollars per year. Victims are beginning to speak out and ask for help. Law enforcement agencies throughout the country are teaming together to create specialized crime units and task forces in an attempt to successfully combat computer related crimes. Nevada is one of the many states which is in the infancy stages of developing such a task force. The Sacramento Valley High Tech Crime Task Force has …

Random Questions About Law School And The Law: The World's First Socratic Law Review Article, C. Steven Bradford Jan 1999

Random Questions About Law School And The Law: The World's First Socratic Law Review Article, C. Steven Bradford

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Many law professors utilize the Socratic method in their teaching, presumably because wisdom is to be found in the questions them selves. Yet, no law professors use the Socratic method in their writing. Why? I believe it is a wise marketing decision by law professors. Anyone off the street can read a law review article, and receive its wisdom for free. If law professors disclosed their full Socratic wisdom in law reviews, no one would come to law school, and law professors would be unemployed. By withholding their Socratic questions from law reviews, law professors have forced students to pay …

Expanding The Investment Company Act: The Sec's Manipulation Of The Definition Of Security, C. Steven Bradford Jan 1999

Expanding The Investment Company Act: The Sec's Manipulation Of The Definition Of Security, C. Steven Bradford

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is sometimes accused of using the administrative process "to graft new, substantive standards and obligations onto existing statutes or SEC rules." Through the use of the no-action letter process, the SEC staff sometimes creates substantive securities law which is inconsistent with the relevant federal securities statutes and case law. Many of these staff positions "go far beyond reasonable and fair explanations of existing statutes or SEC rules." However, in substantive areas lacking definitive case law or rules, these no-action letters assume an extraordinary importance to securities lawyers and regulated entities. For all practical purposes, …

The Defendant And The Criminal Trial : Does Providing Knowledge About The Criminal Justice System Help?, Daniel B. Hurley Jan 1999

The Defendant And The Criminal Trial : Does Providing Knowledge About The Criminal Justice System Help?, Daniel B. Hurley

Theses : Honours

Defendants are required to make many decisions during their encounter with the criminal justice system (i.e., plea, venue, representation, bail and, possibly, appeal). The assumption exists that defendants possess sufficient organizational and pragmatic knowledge of the system to make these decisions. However, research suggests that many defendants lack sufficient knowledge of the criminal justice system to make these decisions, and that this lack of knowledge may lead to feelings of anxiety. As a consequence of these findings, many defendants may be unable to effectively participate in the criminal justice system. By way of remedying this situation, it has been argued …

The Richness Of Contract Theory, Randy E. Barnett Jan 1999

The Richness Of Contract Theory, Randy E. Barnett

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay is a review of The Richness of Contract Law: An Analysis and Critique of Conemporary Theories of Contract Law by Robert A. Hillman (1997).

Throughout the book, Hillman offers a number of useful insights about various issues of contract law and theory--as he has in his numerous law review articles--but in this review the author is concerned with his overall theme: a general skepticism about "unifying" or "highly abstract" contract theories that fail to mirror the richness of contract law. In this regard, Hillman stands in the "realist" tradition of the previous generation of contracts scholars. Hillman attempts …

Managed Health Care In Prisons As Cruel And Unusual Punishment, Ira Robbins Jan 1999

Managed Health Care In Prisons As Cruel And Unusual Punishment, Ira Robbins

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: Billy Roberts, a prisoner in an Alabama state prison, had a history of severe psychiatric disorders. He was often put on suicide watch, and received large doses of psychotropic drugs. A managed health care company, Correctional Medical Services (CMS), was responsible for the health care at the prison. After Roberts had a suicidal episode, CMS's statewide mental health care director reportedly put Roberts in an isolation cell rather than a psychiatric care unit. The mental health care director also ordered that Roberts' medication be discontinued pursuant to an alleged policy of CMS to get as many prisoners off psycho- …
