Mobile Communication Devices And Government-Public Engagement, Lloyd Brown
Mobile Communication Devices And Government-Public Engagement, Lloyd Brown
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Americans have seemingly gone mobile. With a mobile communication device - cell phone, smartphone, iPad or other tablet devices - people can send and receive information anytime and anywhere. Meanwhile, government organizations primarily at the federal government level have been encouraged to participate in and engage with the public through the internet. This project uses a media ecology frame to look at whether the increasing mobility of communication made possible through the acceptance and proliferation of wireless technology devices such as smartphones, tablet and laptop computers and e-readers is affecting the relationship between state department of transportation agencies and the …

Bridging The Gap Between Interpersonal Communication Skill Differences In Employees: An Interpersonal Communication Training Curriculum, Denise Marie Crowell
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
The workforce is a social environment where particular skills are essential in order for employees to perform well, have a competitive edge and succeed in their careers. Interpersonal communication is one of the skills needed in every type of workplace setting. The ability to actively and empathetically listen, adapt communication style according to others and situations, confirm others in communication, resolve conflict, manage tone in writing and effectively communicate in a group are all crucial skills for employees that require exceptional interpersonal communication. However, constructivism theory suggests that due to variances in cognition, not everyone is able to communicate interpersonally …

As individuals, we believe we have the unique ability to choose our paths and carve out our destiny in America. As we sculpt our path, through a variety of decisions, our relationships often serve as a governing force developing our person along our journey. Due to their influential nature, this project explores the power of mentor mentee relationships as it relates to youth development. Grounded in the theory of transcendence, the social penetration theory and the uncertainty reduction theory, this project investigates youth mentoring and its positive influence on three basic parameters: social and emotional effect, cognitive effect, and identity …
Negotiating Online Identities In Social Media: A Study Of University Students, Christine Elise Benage
Negotiating Online Identities In Social Media: A Study Of University Students, Christine Elise Benage
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Identity and identity construction are constantly changing areas of study, especially as they relate to communication studies. Online communication is an increasingly common mode of communication, and social media is one of the fastest growing forms of online communication. In social media, individuals create pages that seemingly represent themselves. This representation contains both initial and ongoing negotiation of identity. This study explores how college students, as an active demographic in social media networking, negotiate and manage their online identities. The theory primarily used to study this mode of communication is Computer-mediated Communication theory, which encompasses other theories including social presence …

C. William Pollard Papers
This speech was delivered at the University of Arkansas's Tyson Center for Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace (Fayetteville, AR). Such measures will ensure that corporate firms will always consider profit alongside the more significant goal of forming moral character.
A Qualitative Study On How Dialogue, Discussion, And Debate Manifest In A Corporate Setting, Lisa Wocken
A Qualitative Study On How Dialogue, Discussion, And Debate Manifest In A Corporate Setting, Lisa Wocken
Theses and Graduate Projects
How do dialogue, discussion and debate occur in the workplace? I explored this question through qualitative interviews of 14 high potential leaders at a Fortune 50 company, by asking them about their conversations at work.
Through in-depth transcript analysis, I identified and quantified behavioral themes for each form of conversation. Each response was labeled as effective or ineffective and counted to determine the frequency with which it was cited. The results indicated that discussion behaviors were effectively and prevalently exhibited in 86% of examples. Dialogue behaviors were effective and common, and cited in 36% of examples. Debate behaviors were ineffective …
The Roles Of Women In Television Situation Comedies: A Pilot Study, Amanda Marie Irene Scott
The Roles Of Women In Television Situation Comedies: A Pilot Study, Amanda Marie Irene Scott
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
This work constitutes a pilot study of male/female relationships in television situational comedies. Twenty-five sitcom episodes which aired on major television networks between the years 2000-2011 were evaluated for instances of the perpetuation of patriarchy and the stereotyping of traditional gender roles. The episodes were chosen from three different television shows. The findings indicated that television sitcoms are perpetuating patriarchy and promoting traditional gender role stereotypes; furthermore, the shows do not appear to portray an accurate depiction of real life society. The study has limitations including time constraints, but provides a baseline for further studies on the subject.

An Analysis Of Feminism As Reflected In Media Objectification, Kimberly Alsop Hobson
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Nearly 50 years after the National Organization for Women's Statement of Purpose vowed to revolutionize the artificial and sexist depiction of women in media and to promote images of women in self-respecting and active partnerships with men, objectification is more of a problem than ever before. This study examines the interplay of Cultivation theory, Social Comparison theory, Objectification theory and Feminist writings in order to study the origins and consequences of objectification for women. Dissemination of a survey instrument consisting of 14 questions and completed by 235 women over a period of five days, assesses the discernment women have about …
Fairness: Processes Are As Important As Outcomes, David Chan
Fairness: Processes Are As Important As Outcomes, David Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
People are sensitive to the fairness of decisions made or the treatment they receive. Research in work contexts has shown that it is important for processes like personnel selection, performance appraisal and compensation to be perceived as fair, because fairness perceptions influence how people react to situations and their leaders. This also applies to public policy implementation and public engagement efforts.

With some 3,800 (and growing) employees in the region alone, the world's number three pharmaceutical player (by revenue) is paying greater attention than ever in building up its leadership capabilities for its future.
Developing A Leadership Consortium, Jan Lloyd, Sherry L. Early Phd
Developing A Leadership Consortium, Jan Lloyd, Sherry L. Early Phd
Leadership Studies Faculty Research
Although the term “leadership” did not appear until approximately the 1850s, leadership can be viewed as an ancient art (Bass, 1990). However, it was not until 1976 that the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Commission IV developed a leadership task force to investigate leadership programs in higher education and clearly defined the differences between leadership development, leadership training, and leadership education (Roberts & Ullom, 1990). The field of leadership progressed over the years by examining various components such as trait theory, behavioral theories, situational theories, and, most recently, leadership identity development theories. Since then, information regarding definitions of leadership, descriptions …
An Observation Of The Facebook Messaging Strategies Of Nonprofit Vs. For-Profit Organizations, Kristin Parker
An Observation Of The Facebook Messaging Strategies Of Nonprofit Vs. For-Profit Organizations, Kristin Parker
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Over the last five years, organizations have begun to invest in non-traditional marketing communications strategies, specifically, social media marketing. While organizations, in general, are clear about the value of social media marketing, their current strategies are not engaging and uninspiring. The literature on this topic highlights critical considerations for the most significant communications impact (Foulger, 2004; Lasswell, 1948), such as the importance of human interaction, interpersonal ability, personal influence and intimacy (Lazarsfeld, 1944 ; Short, Williams & Christie, 1976). Additionally, a study by Boase, Horrigan, Wellman & Rainie (2006) presents research on how the Internet and Social Networking are revolutionizing …

Toward GemeinschaftsgefüHl: Exploring Subordinate And Manager Perceptions Of Trust And Perceptions Regarding Behavioral Change Potential, Bobby G. Martin
Publications
In this qualitative, phenomenological study, Maslow‘s Eupsychian theory was used as the guiding framework for exploring the perceptions of trust and the behavioral change potential of subordinates (includes frontline supervisors) and managers (excludes frontline supervisors) within selected aviation maintenance organizations in Arizona. The problem addressed in the study was the growing concern that managers willfully mistreated subordinates, which led to decreased trust, motivation, and productivity. A combined representative sample of 10 maintenance technicians and frontline supervisors was purposively selected from the production lines of a large commercial aviation repair and overhaul station located in Arizona. An additional combined representative sample …

In conducting this research I investigated the effectiveness of youth leadership development programming in the Wilder Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI), a program located in St. Paul, Minnesota. For this qualitative case study, I used participant observation, semi-structured interviews and a survey to explore the development and demonstration of specific leadership capacities and skills (communication and interpersonal skills, analytical and critical functioning, decision making skills, personal identity, project management, reflection, and sense of empowerment) among youth participants. I also explored the programmatic structures that facilitate Youth Leadership Development (in the context of a cause chosen by youth, explicit outcomes, developmentally appropriate …

Of Ice And Men: Chilling Leadership Tales Of Four Great Explorers, Singapore Management University
Perspectives@SMU
Following a brief pause after the Age of Exploration, the desire of human beings to reach every corner of their earth, however remote, was revived when expeditions to the two Polar Regions began in the 19th century. Participants of such harsh expeditions might have been carrying on the mantle of adventure or seeking fame, but they also provide fine examples for some very important lessons, said author Ragnar Kvam.

The Lived Experiences Of 3rd Generation And Beyond U.S.-Born Mexican Heritage College Students: A Qualitative Study, Richard Galvan Edd
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe the psychosocial and identity challenges of 3rd generation and beyond U.S.-born (3GAB-USB) Mexican heritage college students. Alvarez (1973) has written about the psychosocial impact "hybridity" can have on a U.S.- born (USB) Mexican individual who incorporates two distinct cultures (American and Mexican) in order to succeed in U.S. society, and yet, few empirical data is available beyond the 1st and 2nd generation on USB Mexican college students. As an example, there is no mention in the literature of two distinct and different worldviews present between immigrant and 3GAB-USB Mexican college students, which …
Reaching An Agreement: Effects Of Tv Violence On Youth, Brittany T. Rawlings
Reaching An Agreement: Effects Of Tv Violence On Youth, Brittany T. Rawlings
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Over the course of a year, a child will spend 1,500 hours watching television, a significant amount when compared to the 900 hours he or she will spend in school (Herr, 2007). Violence is one of the dominating messages disseminated through the sensation of television, which plays an active role in entertaining and impacting the lives of today‘s young audience. Because of its prevalence, violence on TV has grown to be a controversial issue on which several studies have been conducted since the 1950s. This thesis explores past research and takes a critical look at studies conducted within the last …

E-Ffects On Relationality In Leadership: Looking At The Effects Of The Use Of Social Network Sites On Aspiring Leaders Through The Lens Of Relational Dialectics, Lori M. Throupe
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
This study will examine the effects of the use of social network sites (SNS), specifically Facebook, on the relationality of aspiring leaders. The use of SNSs has skyrocketed among people all over the world, and particularly within the younger generation. An increasing amount of studies have been undertaken to look at the effects of using such SNSs. Further, as such SNSs take root and reveal substantial influence on relationships and habits within daily life, they seem to be increasingly leveraged by influential people for leadership purposes. As leadership remains one of the most critical topics within our culture, and relationality …

C. William Pollard Papers
Speaking on the occasion of College Church's (Wheaton, IL) 150th anniversary, Pollard posits whether God and profit can actually mix. Trials, Tribulations, And Triumphs: Writing The Major Paper Or Thesis As A Graduate Student With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Judy L. Chucker
Theses and Graduate Projects
Graduate students with attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) are at risk for failure to complete their graduate programs. Skills used in writing a major paper or thesis requirement incorporate those that are particularly compromised by the disorder. The literature does not address the problems facing graduate students with AD/HD, and disability service programs do not appear to offer support tailored to the needs of this population. This phenomenological study probes the experience of five graduate students with AD/HD who were in the process of writing, or had completed a major paper or thesis. This paper hopes …

Effects Of Youth Participation On Adults In A Neighborhood Multi-Organizational Project, Joanne Marie Benham
Effects Of Youth Participation On Adults In A Neighborhood Multi-Organizational Project, Joanne Marie Benham
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Engaging youth in decision-making processes with adults is of growing interest in communities across the country. Reasons generally cited are that youth benefit from interactions with caring adults who help them build skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. These experiences are essential for a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. (Benson, Scales, Hamilton, & Sesma; Hong & Roehlkepartain, 2006). However, researchers Zeldin, McDaniel, Topitzes, and Calvert (2000) hypothesized that these youth/adult decision-making ventures create equally important benefits for adults. In a study of select organizations across the country where youth were members of organizational boards, these researchers found youth …
