Can She Ever Be "The Man"? : The Effect Of Gender On Implicit Perceptions Of Leadership Ability In An Applied Hiring Task, Rebecca S. Frazier
Can She Ever Be "The Man"? : The Effect Of Gender On Implicit Perceptions Of Leadership Ability In An Applied Hiring Task, Rebecca S. Frazier
Honors Theses
Despite numerous advances in the eld of women's rights and a general decline in explicit discrimination, there still exists a dramatic lack of women in leadership positions across America. This research seeks to expand upon past studies suggesting that there is a basic cognitive incongruency between traditional male and leadership roles which leads ordinarily "unbiased" individuals to perceive women as less suited r leadership positions than men. Thus, this experiment investigates the implicit biases against women leaders by asking if the subtle addition of gender information alters individuals' initial impressions of leadership capability in an applied hiring task involving resumes, …
Power And The Rejection Of The Competent Attitudinal Deviant, William Stanton
Power And The Rejection Of The Competent Attitudinal Deviant, William Stanton
Honors Theses
This thesis describes an empirical investigation of the rejection of the deviant and operates under the hypothesis that a powerful leader will be more tolerant of those who disagree with him or her than would a low power leader. Before presenting the results of the study, this chapter will provide an overview of previous work on this topic. In the next few pages I will present a review of the available research concerning group reactions to deviancy, namely that groups reject deviants. Then, I will review available research concerning the psychological effects of power. By the end, this thesis will …
Political Socialization And The Youth Vote : A Study Of Political Engagement During The 2008 Election, Meredith Hull
Political Socialization And The Youth Vote : A Study Of Political Engagement During The 2008 Election, Meredith Hull
Honors Theses
I began my research on political socialization struck about the political apathy I was observing among my friends. Through studying those very same peers here at the University of Richmond in both a survey and interviews, I am even more determined to find ways to encourage high levels of knowledgeable engagement and volunteerism among college aged students. The United States will have to continue to compete in a global market in the future and citizens of other democracies understand and care enough to vote about the changes in that government-what is the problem here?
The results of the survey and …
Deliberative Democracy At The Local Level, Tony Derosa
Deliberative Democracy At The Local Level, Tony Derosa
Honors Theses
This thesis addresses the role that deliberative democracy can play in local politics. Deliberative democracy is a theory that posits discourse among free and equal citizens as a route to better public policy outcomes, a more just society, the fostering of social capital, and the cultivation of civic virtues. While both liberals and civic republicans have endorsed the theory, it stands in direct contrast to the economic theory of democracy. This view equates citizens to consumers, whose private preferences are to be aggregated by the political system. Votes are the equivalent of capital in the market, according to the economic …
Empathy, Group-Level Guilt And Identification : Measuring Their Relationship Through Past American-Cambodian Relations, Laura Musser
Empathy, Group-Level Guilt And Identification : Measuring Their Relationship Through Past American-Cambodian Relations, Laura Musser
Honors Theses
A collective approach to emotions suggests that, in some cases, members of groups may experience collective guilt when they consider the negative actions performed by other members of their group, even when they were not personally involved themselves. Social identity theory suggests that such group-level reactions are more likely when individuals strongly identify with their group, and less likely when their sense of identity is not linked as strongly to their group membership.
This hypothesis was examined by directly manipulating the salience of individuals' collective identities through priming through an identification manipulation. The identification manipulation primed participants to feel more …

A Study Of Perceived Actual Versus Expected Roles Of Presidents Of Seventh-Day Adventist Senior Colleges And Universities In Eleven World Administrative Divisions, Sunith Kumar Das
Dissertations
Problem
To date no study has been undertaken with respect to Seventh-day Adventist senior college and university presidents’ actual and expected roles as perceived by the administrative team members and governing board chairs of these institutions. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between presidents’ actual and expected roles.
Method
This descriptive, exploratory, survey study included a sample (n = 78) of board chairs, presidents, academic vice presidents, student service vice presidents, and finance vice presidents located in 27 senior colleges and universities operated by Seventh-day Adventists in 17 countries, including the U.S.A. Data were collected on …
The Stressors And Coping Strategies Of Women In Leadership Positions, Patricia Ann Bernard
The Stressors And Coping Strategies Of Women In Leadership Positions, Patricia Ann Bernard
Dissertations
Purpose
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey, 60% of employed women cited stress as their most serious problem at work. Working outside the home and balancing a family create conflicts between work and family obligations which become a likely cause of stress for women. While stress may be a problem among working women in general, it seems highly probable that women who function in leadership positions may experience additional stressors. Consequently, this study focused on investigating the stressors of women who currently function in leadership positions and the coping strategies they use to combat …
How Effective Leaders Learn From Life: A Grounded Theory Study Of The Impact Of Significant Life Experiences Upon Leadership Development, Ryan P. Meers
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Fifteen effective leaders from diverse organizational backgrounds described their significant life experiences and the impact upon their development as leaders. Using grounded theory methodology, a theoretical model emerged for assisting leaders absorb greater learning from their various life experiences. Related to the central phenomenon of how effective leaders learn from significant life experiences, four causal conditions of types of experiences were identified as influencing how leaders learn: (1) experiences of adversity or loss; (2) experiences of “stretch assignments”; (3) inspirational experiences; and (4) experiences with conflict. Strategies used by the leaders to absorb learning from their significant experiences were active …

The Voice Of Silence, David E. Wilkins
The Voice Of Silence, David E. Wilkins
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
What is silence? Is it the mere absence of words or sound? Or is it a sound itself? Simon and Garfunkel in their early 1960s hit, "The Sound of Silence," focused on a meaning that seems to predominate in our society—that silence implies apathy, or a lack of communication. They sang: "Silence like a cancer grows. Hear my words that I might teach you, Take my arms that I might reach you. But my words like silent raindrops fell, and echoed in the wells of silence."
For Native peoples, silence historically was understood as a means to convey often profound …
Leader-Member Exchange (Lmx) Theory, Crystal L. Hoyt, George R. Goethals
Leader-Member Exchange (Lmx) Theory, Crystal L. Hoyt, George R. Goethals
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Leader-member exchange (LMX) theory is rooted in the idea that leaders and followers exchange benefits, and that their relationships are at the heart of the leadership process. Social scientists have long attempted to understand how people relate to each other, beginning with explorations of costs and rewards, interpersonal behavior, and human relationship. A number of theories have used the lens of interpersonal relationships to understand leadership, including Edwin Hollander's focus on idiosyncrasy credits, Tom Tuyler's notion of procedural justice, Dave Messick's delineation of psychological exchanges, and James MacGregor Burns's conceptualization of transforming and transactional leadership. Most notably, George Graen and …

Socioemotional And Task Behavior, George R. Goethals
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
In problem-solving groups, individual members engage in different types of behavior, including task behavior, which focuses on the external problem to be addressed, and socioemotional behavior, which addresses the feelings that arise as a result of group interaction. This entry describes these two types of behavior and examines the leadership styles of group leaders who focus on each one.
The Question Of Love And Power, Shann Ferch
The Question Of Love And Power, Shann Ferch
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? These words, penned by poet Mary Oliver, are a fitting place to begin a conversation on servant-leadership and the possibilities that exist in the space created by the paradox of justice and forgiveness. The tension of human conflict can be likened to a great bonfire whose tongues reach the heavens through the enduring gifts of human goodness, but the heat of which can also be a reminder of the hell we so often create by our relentless capacity for evil. In receiving the gift …

Savoring Life Through Servant-Leadership, Richard Leider, Larry Spears
Savoring Life Through Servant-Leadership, Richard Leider, Larry Spears
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Since the dawn of civilization, great thinkers have debated the quality of human existence, often calling it "the good life." To some thinkers, the ideal state is one of generating power and wealth; to others, it is about community and relationships; and to yet others, it is about service and humanitarian ideals as the path to the good life. The good life from cradle-to-grave has proven to be an elusive concept to agree upon. There are enough definitions to fill a small book. Yet, one central theme, purpose-having a reason to get up in the morning-seems to be an element …
“Purity Versus Popularity”: Potential Opportunities And Tensions Among The Differing Emphases Of Servant-Leadership, Stephen Prosser
“Purity Versus Popularity”: Potential Opportunities And Tensions Among The Differing Emphases Of Servant-Leadership, Stephen Prosser
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
On the first occasion I spoke in public about my commitment to the principles of servant-leadership, I told the story of a manager who, on hearing me discuss being a servant-leader, saw it as an opportunity to develop his career. The latest thinking, any new idea being discussed by senior management, could be used as a fashionable shibboleth to help advance that career. With this potential misuse of servant-leadership in mind, I made my way toward the conclusion of my lecture: There is an understandable temptation to see the concept of servant-leadership as something so important that one has to …

The following section highlights the presidency of two institutions of higher learning in the Western United States, Gonzaga University and Whitworth College. Robert Spitzer, SJ. of Gonzaga and Bill Robinson of Whitworth have developed a lasting friendship with one another, unique in that one is president of a Catholic university, the other president of a Protestant college. Considered by many to be servant-leaders with effective and very different approaches, the two presidents have become crucial developers of their respective communities. Under their leadership Gonzaga and Whitworth continue to receive national acclaim.

Faith-Based Volunteers In Local Jails: The Inaugural Test Of Servant-Leadership, Linda Keena
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Robert Greenleaf believed the best leadership results from a desire to serve others (Greenleaf, 1991). Servant-leaders approach others with humble spirits, seeking to serve rather than to be served. In his essay The Servant as Leader, Greenleaf (1991) asserted, "Not everything that is old and worn, or even corrupt, can be thrown away. Some of it has to be rebuilt and used again. So it is with the words serve and lead" (p. 1). For that reason, the message of the "leader-as-servant" (Greenleaf, 1998, p. 4) exemplifies the spirit of faith-based correctional volunteers. As advanced by John MacArthur (1994) in …

Serving The Led: Democratic Options For A Nigerian Village, Peter Oleh Amah
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In a world of hard-to-predict, rapid change, leaders must understand the complexity of our social and natural world of variations, need for mutual interactive discussion, and process of selection for effective leadership. According to Axelrod and Cohen (2000), it is hard to predict situations in Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS), which means a "world where many players are all adapting to each other and where the emerging future is extremely hard to predict" (p. xi). Complex Adaptive Systems has a premise that agents are diverse (pp. 47 & 33). In a monoculture community, such as that of the Okpo/Ihechiowa in Southeast …
Transcendent Leadership: Theory And Practice Of An Emergent Metaphor, John Jacob Zucker Gardiner, Elizabeth Lena Walker
Transcendent Leadership: Theory And Practice Of An Emergent Metaphor, John Jacob Zucker Gardiner, Elizabeth Lena Walker
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Albert Einstein once said that a problem could never be solved at the same level of consciousness that created it. Yet, great difficulty may lie in shifting from an old to a new paradigm. The road ahead will be difficult, but the course is clear: a new paradigm is needed to bring human efforts to higher levels of synergy: the metaphor of transcendent leadership. Transcendent leadership provides a revolutionary frame of viewing human interaction in organizational settings. And as David Suzuki said of human interactions: "Solutions are in our nature."

And then to Sam's utter surprise and confusion he [Aragorn the king] bowed his knee before them; and taking them by the hand, Frodo upon his right and Sam upon his left, he led them to the throne, and setting them upon it, he turned to the men and captains who stood by and spoke, so that his voice rang over all the host, crying: "Praise them with great praise!" -J.R.R. Book Review: Political Leadership And Jesus’ “Best Test”: A Review Of The Politics Of Jesus: Rediscovering The True Revolutionary Nature Of The Teachings Of Jesus And How They Have Been Corrupted, Richard Cummins
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Obery M. Hendricks, Jr., an accomplished biblical scholar, began this analysis of the political dimension of Jesus with a description of his frustration with his early education, when he was taught about only the meek and otherworldly Christ, the "long-suffering Jesus who was concerned with the things of heaven, with little thought for the matters of this world, matters like social injustice, racial and gender inequities, or the systematic oppression of the poor" (p. 3). He could not square this interpretation with what he was reading in scriptures about the Christ who opposed the Pharisees and other oppressive forces in …

Holographic Leadership integrates values-based leadership into an understanding of an energetic holographic world. It is a world where the unseen is the primary influencer, where the smaller is more powerful (Bohm, 1994). I will synthesize many diverse ideas into an exploratory theory that will suggest new insights into sustainable leadership. I will propose a new model of practice from which to work. I suggest that it is through an internal state of physiological coherence and psychological balance that a leader can truly learn to “hold steady” (Heifetz, 1994), creating an intentional holding environment, a coherent group dynamic, which draws forth …

Art, Water, And Circles: In What Ways Do Study Circles Empower Artists To Become Community Leaders Around Water Issues, Jill Beth Jacoby
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This research explored the use of study circles as a means of engaging artists in dialogue with their peers about water related concerns. The question driving this research was, “In what ways do study circles empower artists to become community leaders around water issues?” Secondary questions focused on emerging environmental, water, and social justice themes as well as examples of increased water awareness and behavior change occurring as a result of individual participation in the study circles. Artists have a unique way of commanding attention and communicating about environmental concerns while functioning as catalysts for activism on a variety of …
Master Teachers’ Critical Practice And Student Learning Strategies: A Case Study In An Urban School District, Greg G. Paulmann
Master Teachers’ Critical Practice And Student Learning Strategies: A Case Study In An Urban School District, Greg G. Paulmann
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Job embedded professional development in the K-12 education setting has long been discussed and debated. This study builds on standards of critical reflection and thinking using the National Institute for Excellence in Education’s Teacher Advancement Program’s master teacher model as a conduit between theory and practice. A study of professional development design based on student learning strategies became worthy of review. The master teacher, through field testing and critical reflection, isolates critical elements necessary to transform teaching practice around student learning strategies. The work of the master teacher is situated as a leader of change within a professional learning community. …
