The origination of two projects, their development and implementation, described in this paper, illustrate a concept of non-partisan citizen leadership. The report begins with a discourse on the over-arching theme of community sustainability through discussions of our complex world and citizen participation in democracy. This leadership concept is embodied within the context of two projects, the Rural Community Leadership Project, and the Sustainability Forums Project.

Methodologies to examine community sustainability used by both projects described in this thesis were designed to foster proactive citizen leadership, which will help to plan their community's future. It provides for project participants at the …

The burst of the Japanese bubble economy in 1992 brought about many reforms in Japanese education. One example of these reforms is the recent introduction of web-based instruction into Japanese classrooms. Since traditional Japanese education has been greatly influenced by elements of Confucianism, many educators are concerned about the integration of web-based instruction with traditional Japanese teaching methods. The purposes of this study were to investigate Japanese female junior college students' attitudes and/or perceptions of learning in a web-based environment, and to measure performance between students in a traditional teacher-centered course with another group of students learning via web-based instruction. …

Personality testing is widely used in the employee selection process, particularly to determine leadership potential for management positions. Recent research has established personality tests as potentially valuable predictors of job performance. However, a reliance upon personality testing in the employment setting raises a common concern about the prevalence of response distortion and its effect on criterion validity and applicant ranking.

This study looks at the teacher's role and impact on building a classroom community. A heterogeneous mix of 20 second grade students (ages 7 and 8) in a self contained classroom were videotaped daily having a fruit snack. A Qualitative method of research was applied to the data. Fieldnotes were written daily to describe the visual data. The study found that the teacher's role is very significant in the community. The results indicated that rules, procedures, and etiquette were the themes that centered around the group in their quest to build community. Through the phenomenological research method, this thesis asks, what can we learn about leadership from music? A review of literature providing links between the two subjects is presented in the Literature Review. Concepts of aesthetic education and experience are presented as significant links between music and leadership. The researher's own experiences are also discussed. The thesis body explores how leadership theories and leadership characteristics apply to ensembles, performance and the director. The relationship between music subjects, performers and audiences are discussed through historical examples. The conclusion addresses the thesis question, "what can we learn about leadership from music?"

This study offers a review of literature that explores five key tenets of servant-leadership. For personal and financial reasons some retired military officers seek second careers in the public sector. In entering local government, they are leaving a unique organization, and encountering a very different organizational culture. This study used grounded theory methodology to identify the key military leadership strategies and behaviors learned by military officers and to examine their applicability to local government. The review of literature showed that students should be provided the opportunity to learn leadership skills that focus on the individual, family, school and community. The dramatic increase of mothers in the workforce in the past 40 years has led to an increasingly common lifestyle: women filling the roles of mother and professional concurrently. This dissertation used the personal narrative qualitative methodology to examine the lives of working mothers. The purpose of this study was to examine the similarities and differences in preferred leadership qualities among a random sample of principals of traditional elementary schools in California, traditional elementary schools in Alberta, Canada, and selected charter schools in the United States. The intent of the research was to identify the preferred leadership practices of each study group to determine and report significant differences and similarities. Seventy-five principals were randomly selected, 25 from each of the three study groups, to complete the survey. Forty-two principals (56%) returned surveys. This Portraits of Leadership research focuses on using children's artwork to study girls' perceptions of leadership. 244 school age children were asked to draw their image of a leader and to write descriptions of why they chose this person as a leader. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted to determine the relationships among gender, age, and creativity and choice of leader in drawing and written descriptions. Results indicate that, though both girls and boys chose males as leaders more often than females, girls' portraits conformed to the literature regarding gender roles and traditional leadership styles. Teachers at Seaview Elementary School developed an innovative reading support program delivered by classroom teachers to increase the achievement of children who struggled to read literature in the district's core curriculum. Although studies of the program's impact on student achievement indicated that many of the children who received services in the classroom were able to fluently read grade level materials and improve their scores on standardized tests, issues created by the additional burden of this instruction on some teachers prevented the integration of the program into other grade levels and schools in the Seaview School District and Seaview Elementary School. …

This modified case study honors the voices of 21 Cree participants, including nine students, six parents, four community leaders and two Elders. This study, written from an insider's perspective, identified more than 50 reasons why First Nations students dropped out of three provincial high schools located in northern Alberta, Canada. The results were collapsed into several categories that can best be generalized as resulting from the effects of colonization. When we set out to examine the various forms and patterns of indigenous political participation in the three polities they are connected to—tribal, state, and federal—we are stepping into a most complicated subject matter. It is complicated in large part because Indians are citizens of separate extra-constitutional nations whose members have only gradually been incorporated in various ways by various federal policies and day to day interactions with non-Indians. Tribal nations, of course, have never been constitutionally incorporated and still retain their standing as separate political bodies not beholden to either federal or state constitutions for their existence.

Method. Public sector leaders were surveyed by mail-in questionnaires as to their ratings of a set of leadership competencies. Analogue research for private sector leaders, conducted by a colleague, was incorporated for some analysis.
