The precepts of servant-leadership, described by Robert K. Greenleaf, are the focal points around which this study was conducted. The study was designed to gain a measure of the extent of servant-leadership and personal aspects of spirit within the organizations, rather than as an attempt to measure the servant-leadership and spirit of certain organizational leaders. The quantitative study was designed to enhance understanding of servant-leadership and spirit in organizations.

"Top line," used by researchers in the field of leadership and creativity (Freeman, Isaksen, & Dorval, 2001), proposes that servant-leadership is a driving force of organizations focused on questions of why and for whom, as opposed to the bottom-line what (pp. 265-267). Higher education could improve with leadership development efforts to "reclaim intangible resources, including people's talents that increase innovative capacity by focusing on relationships, perceptions, and attitudes" (p. 264). My dictionary offers the following definitions for the words: Heart, Mind, and Spirit- • Heart: regarded as the seat of emotions, personality, attributes. • Mind: the thinking and perceiving part of consciousness. • Spirit: a pervading animating principle, essential, or characteristic quality of life. In Cervantes' literary classic Don Quixote, there is a remarkable scene in which Quixote describes the beauty of Dulcinea (the object of his passion) to his hapless squire Sancho Panza. Dulcinea's true identity is revealed to Panza, who recognizes her as a peasant girl from a neighboring village. Upon learning the young woman's identity, Panza attempts to persuade Quixote that Dulcinea (whose real name is Aldonza Lorenzo) is, in reality, quite plain and boorish. In light of the career and work of Marcus Garvey, the leadership skills he employed help to amplify Robert Greenleaf's description of the true and genuine servant-leader. In the Singapore education system certain features emerge in leadership concepts pertaining to servant-leadership and leadership mentoring. Greenleaf's notions of foresight as the "central ethic of leadership" and conceptualizing as the "prime leadership talent" (Greenleaf, 1970, pp. 16 & 23), as well as the practice of leadership learned through mentoring (Low, 1995; Lim, 2005) have come to the fore in recent years. In our experience the commensurability of these ideas-foresight, conceptualizing, and mentoring-serve as legitimate means toward the end of a more whole and servant-led educational learning environment.

Christine Wicker, a senior religion reporter for The Dallas Morning News, captures an intriguing aspect of the spirit of Robert Greenleaf and the servant-leadership movement he created in her essay, Seeking the Soul of Business. The image of the leader as servant has come to exercise a profound influence within secular organizations (Spears, 1995, p. 3). Yet one can argue that its antecedents are in the religious world. Servant-leadership is a major theme in the Judea-Christian tradition, from the weeping Joseph embracing his brothers (Genesis 45:15, New Oxford Annotated Bible) to Jesus washing the feet of his disciples (John 13:5). The leadership literature often enumerates different leadership types and qualities (Northouse, 2002). This article aims to examine servant-leadership using an empirical example with a coherent theoretical basis. It centres on Fethullah Giilen, the initiator of a worldwide Islamic social movement. Giilen is of Turkish origin but has lived in the United States since 1999 because of the repressive political atmosphere of Turkey and due to some personal health problems. He has been defined as a harmonizing leader and an intellectual-scholar (ulama) focussing on social reforms and mentality change (Bulac, 2005).
