In Vaill's (1998) forward to The Power of Servant Leadership, a challenge is offered to educational institutions: to increase the "sheer number of younger men and women who will be helped to develop as servant-leaders" (p. xiii). Vaill furthers this challenge by pointing out, "We in higher education know that only by accident are we producing visionary young men and women who aspire to leadership, to the extent we are producing them at all. The people of Arochukwu in Southeast Nigeria called this igwebuike. The word igwebuike etymologically came from the three Igbo words Igwe, bu, and ike which mean a community of strength. The Character of the Servant-Leader From the very conception of the term, writing about servant-leadership was focused on the individual who would be leader (Greenleaf, 1970). This defining feature, the focus on the servant-leader's character, is at the core of ongoing research (Laub, 1999; Abel, 2000; Russell, 2001; Russell & Stone, 2002; Sendjaya & Sarros, 2002; Patterson, 2003; Stone, Russell, & Patterson, 2004; Page & Wong, 2003, 2005), and this paper proposes a way toward developing a servant-leader's character through deliberate action, thinking, and visioning.

Greenleaf's first career, the 38 years he spent with AT&T, left a legacy of rich innovation. At that time, the official name of the company was American Telephone and Telegraph. According to Robert K. Greenleaf, Love is an indefinable term, and its manifestations are both subtle and infinite. But it begins, I believe, with one absolute condition: unlimited liability! As soon as one's liability for another is qualified to any degree, love is diminished by that much. Institutions, as we know them, are designed to limit liability for those who serve through them.
