As a result of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 (NCLB), educational accountability standards have increased (Stecher & Kirby, 2004). Educational leaders are now responsible for meeting expectations unparalleled by those of previous decades (Aldridge, 2003). The following section highlights the presidency of two institutions of higher learning in the Western United States, Gonzaga University and Whitworth College. Robert Spitzer, SJ. of Gonzaga and Bill Robinson of Whitworth have developed a lasting friendship with one another, unique in that one is president of a Catholic university, the other president of a Protestant college. Considered by many to be servant-leaders with effective and very different approaches, the two presidents have become crucial developers of their respective communities. Under their leadership Gonzaga and Whitworth continue to receive national acclaim.

Robert Greenleaf believed the best leadership results from a desire to serve others (Greenleaf, 1991). Servant-leaders approach others with humble spirits, seeking to serve rather than to be served. In his essay The Servant as Leader, Greenleaf (1991) asserted, "Not everything that is old and worn, or even corrupt, can be thrown away. Some of it has to be rebuilt and used again. Albert Einstein once said that a problem could never be solved at the same level of consciousness that created it. Yet, great difficulty may lie in shifting from an old to a new paradigm. The road ahead will be difficult, but the course is clear: a new paradigm is needed to bring human efforts to higher levels of synergy: the metaphor of transcendent leadership. Transcendent leadership provides a revolutionary frame of viewing human interaction in organizational settings. And as David Suzuki said of human interactions: "Solutions are in our nature."

Appropriate use of self-talk and cognitive strategy has been shown to improve individual performance on a variety of tasks by increasing confidence, focus, and awareness. Likewise, depending on its use, self-talk and cognitive strategy has also been shown to be detrimental to performance. Little research has been undertaken to explore the relationship between self-talk and cognitive strategy and the factors that precipitate changes between the two. Films are important messengers of societal values and norms. Content analysis of 12 blockbuster films from 1957 to 2007 reveals patterns of discrimination against women in film. Six categories of inequality and discrimination were documented dealing with women as main characters in these blockbuster films, women’s roles portraying the characters in professional jobs, women in film being decision-makers, women in the category of damsels in distress, women as sex objects, and derogatory actions and comments towards women.

In today’s changing job market, employers and recruiters are looking to new technological methods of evaluating potential job candidates. One of these technologies is the use of social networking websites. This thesis examines the frequency to which this practice is used and also the specific behaviors looked for when checking candidate profiles. It also investigates the awareness and opinions of job seekers who have social networking profiles. Data analysis of the employer/recruiter questionnaire revealed that most employers and recruiters admit to using social networking websites as a candidate evaluation tool at least some of the time. Robert K. Greenleaf coined the term servant-leadership in his seminal 1970 essay, "The Servant as Leader." The servant-leader concept has had a deep and lasting influence over the past three decades on many modern leadership ideas and practices. Greenleaf spent his first career of 40 years at AT&T, retiring as director of management research in 1964. That same year Greenleaf founded The Center for Applied Ethics (later renamed The Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership). This paper proposes a university leadership curriculum for undergraduate female students who are from Mexican migrant farm worker backgrounds. This historical event had a tremendous impact on the world. Much has been written about Mandela as a leader, but little has highlighted his cultural background, how it influenced his deep-seated cultural values and beliefs, and how his culture shaped his leadership. "Top line," used by researchers in the field of leadership and creativity (Freeman, Isaksen, & Dorval, 2001), proposes that servant-leadership is a driving force of organizations focused on questions of why and for whom, as opposed to the bottom-line what (pp. 265-267).
