The constructs of political skill and servant-leadership may be thought of as paths to influence. Nevertheless, out of curiosity, one might enthusiastically ask whether political skill and servantleadership are two faces of the same coin serving a similar purpose. While one may argue that political skill is an astute skill that leaders employ to influence people to gain political mileage, in some sense, this is a potent argument because leaders do not nominate, elect or put themselves into positions of leadership.

What a year 2020 was! The coronavirus pandemic upended everything. In addition to the pandemic, widespread street demonstrations protested systemic racism and pervasive police violence against Blacks. To document this history-making year, the State Archives of North Carolina and the North Carolina Museum of History partnered to launch a rapid response collection called Your Story is North Carolina’s Story. The story project cast a wide net to gather first-person accounts through journal writings, photographs, objets d'art, oral reminiscences, yard signs, and other artifacts that reflect the zeitgeist of the times.

Born on July 14, I soon learned that Matthew actually shared a birthday with Bob Greenleaf, who had been born in Terre Haute, Indiana on July 14, 1904. In the summer of 2020, against a backdrop of a global pandemic, a U.S. presidential election and the zenith of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, a hermeneutic phenomenological research study was conducted to establish the legitimacy and help define the theory of interruptive symbology. Despite the civil unrest in America, this was a serendipitous time for this type of research, as the mainstream and social media was rife with disruptive images.

A school district in the northeast had as its motto for many years, “We serve youth, that youth may learn to serve.” At first glance, the idea of serving youth may seem overly permissive, but this concept of service did not mean waiting on students, but rather creating an environment in which they would be challenged with a focus on their development.
