Thomas Jefferson would have liked the idea of this book (if not all the essays themselves) since the American West was a canvas on which he loved to paint. Obvious links to western history can be found in Jefferson's 1803 purchase of the Louisiana Territory and his central role in launching the subsequent expedition of Lewis and Clark. Of more subtle relevance was Jefferson's propensity to construct worlds in his imagination, usually filled with sturdy yeomen laboring virtuously on freehold farms carved out of a continental wilderness that he preferred to think of as empty and inviting. E. Jay Jernigan's biography of Bill White results from deep research through personal family correspondence and unindexed Gazette files, as well as the libraries of several Kansas universities. Jernigan uses this research to paint a multifaceted portrait of Bill White, whose Eastern sensibilities made his fellow Emporians regard him as an elitist, yet whose capabilities, Jernigan says, often exceeded those of his more famous father. The end result is a fascinating biography of a man who never entirely escaped his father's shadow-but made every effort to cast one of his own.

This book is another significant contribution to the growing list of scholarly studies of the history of Texas women. Within the larger contexts of southern culture, the Progressive Movement, and the history of feminism, McArthur has produced a convincing chronology of the transformation of middle-class, white Texas women from members of a "patriarchal, evangelical culture that discouraged the formation of independent women's networks" to "volunteerists" who worked openly for social and political reform through their own clubs and associations. David H. Stratton has written a brilliant, comprehensive biography of Albert B. Fall, Secretary of Interior during the Harding administration and the first cabinet member ever convicted and imprisoned for crimes committed while holding office. Fall had leased to Harry E. Sinclair and Edward L. Doheny naval oil reserves in Wyoming's Teapot Dome and California's Elk Mountain and accepted $404,000 from these oil tycoons. The book proposes that out of his early career as a western speculator and corporation lawyer, Fall developed an anti-conservation philosophy and espoused unrestrained and immediate disposition of public lands to private enterprise. Butler writes with conviction, her passion for her subject occasionally leading her to press her point further than the evidence will go. Several times she seems to claim that women prisoners were representative of all women confronting the criminal justice system, writing, for example, "when a child died from a mother's assault, conviction was a certainty." But this claim can only be tested by examining local police and court records to see if all women accused were convicted (they weren't). Women in penitentiaries were not representative; they were the absolute losers in a system that was, admittedly, stacked against them. …

Texas Women might serve as a suitable introduction to elite white women in Texas, but will not serve a deeper purpose because of its lack of original research. (A number of the subjects, such as Ames, Porter, and Martin, have already been subjects of monographs, and others would make interesting full-length studies.) It is not suitable for classroom use because of its lack of multicultural inclusiveness, which could have been easily overcome. Despite their wide use in scientific journals such as The Journal of Wildlife Management, statistical hypothesis tests add very little value to the products of research. Indeed, they frequently confuse the interpretation of data. This paper describes how statistical hypothesis tests are often viewed, and then contrasts that interpretation with the correct one. I discuss the arbitrariness of P-values, conclusions that the null hypothesis is true, power analysis, and distinctions between statistical and biological significance. We report on the habitat associations of 21 species of grassland birds overwintering in or migrating through southern Texas, during 1991-1992 and 1992-1993. Ninety percent of our grassland bird observations were made during winter and spring, and only 10% occurred during fall. Grassland species made up a high proportion of the total bird densities in grassland and shrub-grassland habitats, but much lower proportions in the habitats with more woody vegetation. Fewer grassland species were observed in grassland and woodland than in brushland, parkland, and shrub-grassland habitats.
