"A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose": The Definition Debate, Norman Powell

Norman W. Powell

There has been much discussion and debate among child care workers about the definition of "child care workers." Who is a child care worker? What does the child care worker do with children that is unique and different from the teacher, nurse, the social worker, or the psychologist does?

El Sistema De Plantación Y Ia Proletarización Del Trabajo Agrícola En El Salvador, Melvin Burke Sep 1976

El Sistema De Plantación Y Ia Proletarización Del Trabajo Agrícola En El Salvador, Melvin Burke

School of Economics Faculty Scholarship

The History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In South America, 1945-1960, Joel Alva Flake Jan 1975

The History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In South America, 1945-1960, Joel Alva Flake

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South America between 1945 and 1960 shows growth in numbers of members and strength of those members. The church grew more than 1000 percent during those fifteen years and almost half of all South American branches came under the direction of local, native leadership. The three new missions organized were evidence of the growth being made. Church building was stepped up and Church literature in Spanish and Portuguese became plentiful.

Some problems encountered were opposition of the prevailing church, misunderstandings with government, and the inefficiency of transportation and …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The Yucatán Peninsula, as encompassed in this series of papers, includes the Mexican states of Campeche and Yucatán, and the Federal Territory of Quintana Roo. This region is a low-lying plain that rises gently in elevation from north to south. It is surrounded on three sides by water and bounded on the south by British Honduras (i.e. Belize), Guatemala, and the Mexican state of Tabasco. The vegetation of the peninsula increases in height from north to south and from the coast inland. Generally, forest to the north is xerophilic, but that of the southern part of the peninsula is tall, …

Annotated Checklist Of Mammals Of The Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. I. Chiroptera, J. Knox Jones Jr., James Dale Smith, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Our field investigations on the Yucatán Peninsula were initiated in the summer of 1962 when two field parties from the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas visited the area. One field party consisted of W.E. Duellman and six students enrolled in a summer field course in vertebrate zoology; the other party was composed of the senior author and four students who were conducting a survey of Middle American terrestrial vertebrates and their ectoparasites. Some of the data relative to ectoparasites obtained during this study have appeared in the publications of Emerson (1971), Kohls et al. (1965), Loomis …

Food Preparation Of The Guambianos, An Indigenous Tribe Of Colombia, Ana Margarita Dimock

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The Guambiano Indians are an indigenous tribe of Colombia. Numbering 8,000, their only location is on a reservation just outside the village of Silvia. They retain many unique cultural traits, but are very slowly becoming acculturated into modern Colombian society. Although more nourishing foods are available to them, the Guambianos have a very starchy diet, based upon their subsistence pattern.

Does "Food For Peace" Assistance Damage The Bolivian Economy?, Melvin Burke Jul 1971

Does "Food For Peace" Assistance Damage The Bolivian Economy?, Melvin Burke

School of Economics Faculty Scholarship

Do commodity surplus shipments in fact "encourage economic development in the developing countries ... that are determined to improve their own agricultural production ... "?1 Or conversely, is it true that "food aid is damaging to the countries which receive it, and they should be helped to increase the productivity of their own farmers"?2 The former Bolivian Minister of Petroleum, Marcelo Quiroga, who was largely responsible for the nationalization of the Gulf Oil subsidiary in his country, apparently believes "Food for Peace" aid is damaging to the Bolivian economy.

Land Reform In The Lake Titicaca Region, Melvin Burke Jan 1971

Land Reform In The Lake Titicaca Region, Melvin Burke

School of Economics Faculty Scholarship

Bolivia's National Revolutionary party (MNR) seized power in April 1952 and a year and a half later in August 1953 promulgated the agrarian reform law, which redistributed the land of the haciendas to the former Indian tenants and others. This comparative economic study of the haciendas and ex-haciendas in the Lake Titicaca region of Bolivia and Peru was undertaken to answer three important, but largely unresolved, questions about land reform: (1 ) Which land-tenure system-large estates or small peasant farms-affords the agriculture laborers and cultivators the greater freedom of mobility, opportunity, income, and education? (2) Did the Land-tenancy conditions of …

An Analysis Of The Bolivian Land Reform By Means Of A Comparison Between Peruvian Haciendas And Bolivian Ex-Haciendas, Melvin Burke

School of Economics Faculty Scholarship

In April of 1952, the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario, seized power in Bolivia and in August of the following year passed the Decreto de la Reforma Agraria and proceeded to redistribute the land of the latifundios to the former Indian laborers. This paper intends to analyze the economic and socio-economic consequences of this Bolivian revolutionary land redistribution by means of a comparative study of Peruvian haciendas and Bolivian ex-haciendas in the Lake Titicaca region.

The present study will follow the plan thus indicated. The first section introduces the subject of land reform with a review of the literature and the …
