This paper will look at the history of German relations with the East in an attempt to gain insight into the future of German-East European relations. Change and continuity in German relations with the East from the original German colonization of Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages until the present will be examined. Special attention will be paid to the historical, geographical, and economic factors that have influenced German behavior. The paper will attempt to show that the East has always held an attraction and fascination for the Germans, an attraction that has often led to German efforts to dominate …

The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen

My thesis rests on the notion that, because of the increase of freedoms in the Soviet Union today, many republics are demanding that their autonomy be restored and that this nationality crisis, an unforeseen and unwanted byproduct of recent reforms, has grown into such a disaster that it is now actually impairing the whole reform movement in the Soviet Union as civil unrest and strife are beginning to threaten the stability of this huge empire.
Ethnic identity is not something that can be hidden, changed, forced, or converted, nor will national and cultural roots simply disappear over time. Thus, the …

On the eve of the Romanian revolution of December 1989, Ceausescu exercised a stranglehold on religious expression encompassing I) systematic interference in all aspects of church life, 2) physical intimidation, 3) a ban on Eastern Catholicism and the Lord's Army, and 4) increasing church demolitions. A truly courageous voice of protest from Reformed pastor Laszlo Tokes triggered massive multi-national interdenominational demonstrations in Timisoara which toppled the Communist dictatorship in a matter of days.
