Former Yugoslavia was a small country on the Balkan peninsula in south-east Europe - one of the most ethnically, linguistically, and religiously complicated areas of the world. Its peoples have gained dark fame for the first time in their history during the second decade of the twentieth century, causing the first world-wide war ever. The other event that brought the area into the spotlight was the civil war in Croatia and Bosnia, two of the six former Yugoslav republics - the others are Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Shall The Twain Ever Meet?: On The Cancellation Of The June 1997 Meeting Of The Pope And The Patriarch Of Moscow, Ralph Della Cava
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
At the start of 1998, rumors - as well as denials - are once again flying of an imminent, historic meeting between the Pope of Rome and the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. To put that prospect into perspective, the present article explores the 10 June 1997 decision of the Holy Synod, the powerful interim governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, to cancel the previously scheduled encounter of the two church leaders later that month. It also examines differing explanations offered for that decision and the background to some of the continuing misunderstandings between the two confessions.

Economic Crisis And Reform In Bulgaria, 1989-92, Jonathan B. Wight, M. Louise Fox

Bulgaria's economy began a deep and prolonged collapse in 1989, exactly one hundred years after the noted Bulgarian novelist Ivan Vazov published his stirring novel opposing the tyranny of the Ottomans and warning of the mistaken road of socialism. The 1989 collapse was partially a reflection of the external political upheavals among Bulgaria's trading partners in Eastern Europe, which were rejecting socialist principles. But it was also a reflection of the weaknesses imbedded in the economy after 30 years of central planning. Today Orthodox religiosity includes, as an almost inseparable component, a struggle against Catholics and Protestants, an attempt to expose them as enemies of our faith and of Russia, as well as a complete rejection of ecumenism and of any openness towards other confessions. The very term "ecumenism" has become pejorative and an accusation of affinity towards it is seen as evidence of a certain betrayal of Orthodoxy. Současná transformace kapitalismu začala na konci šedesátých a začátku sedmdesátých let dvacátého století. Jejím výsledkem je měnící se charakter kapitalistického hospodář- ského a společenského systému. Relativně rychlé změny ve způsobu kapitalistické výroby a akumulace jsou doprovázeny společenskými, politickými a kulturními změnami. Tato globální reorganizace kapitalismu byla a je rozdílně interpretována různými školami myšlení.
The contemporary transition of capitalism is changing the nature of the capitalist economic and social system.
