Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2008 - 2009, Singapore Management University

Report to Stakeholders

SMU was envisioned as a bold experiment to redefine tertiary education in Singapore. Taking up the gauntlet to bring university education to a new threshold, it challenges itself to become a leading research university known for its innovative pedagogy that produces a different kind of graduate: all-rounded, talented individuals who can think creatively and divergently, filled with business world savvy and strong interpersonal skills yet rooted in social consciousness. The untested ideas of yesterday have become pages after pages of success stories which we continue to celebrate every Commencement in August. Against the backdrop of not only the worst global …

Identity In Crisis: The Impact Of Education On Ethnic Culture Among The Muser, Nguyen Quang Dung Jan 2008

Identity In Crisis: The Impact Of Education On Ethnic Culture Among The Muser, Nguyen Quang Dung

Asian Review

This paper examines the impact of Thai education on ethnic culture through a case study of the Muser in Amphoe Mae Sot, Tak Province, Thailand. It also studies the process of culture preservation, integration and assimilation of Muser hill people through formal, non-formal and informal education. The study finds that besides knowledge conveyed in central Thai language, Thai identity is inculcated in students through Buddhist teaching, mainstream ethical and moral values, and nationalist ideology. Elements of Muser traditional culture such as cuisine, music, folklore, religion, language and costumes are maintained less by young Muser in comparison with their seniors.

The Development Drive Of North-South Versus South-South Ptas, Jose Luis Ramirez Jan 2008

The Development Drive Of North-South Versus South-South Ptas, Jose Luis Ramirez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of PTAs in today's global economic order is unmistakable, especially during the last fifteen years when their proliferation has dramatically accelerated and their scope and structure have radically changed. However, the available theoretical framework (international trade theories) from which their developmental impact is assessed seems to be largely lagging behind. Hence, there is a crucial need for more realistic assessments of their embedded developmental features because an increasing number of developing countries are perceiving these agreements as one of the key instruments to propel their long delayed economic development. In this thesis, I strive to construct an alternative …

Japanese Worldviews, Ideologies, And Foreign Aid Policy, Richard Warren Shannon Jan 2008

Japanese Worldviews, Ideologies, And Foreign Aid Policy, Richard Warren Shannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project studies the ideational factors influencing Japanese foreign aid policy. It builds on previous research in political science on perception and foreign policy decision-making, Japanese political economy, economic and technological development, foreign aid, and in anthropology on perception, worldview, and international development.

The main goal of the research is to answer the question of how Japan's historical experiences with technology, development, and foreign relations (and key leaders' views of those areas) from 1850 to 1945 have influenced current aid policies. Second, the project aims to answer whether the Japanese development concepts of "modernization," internationalization and translative adaptation accurately reflect …

Japan's Missile Defense, Norifumi Namatame Jan 2008

Japan's Missile Defense, Norifumi Namatame

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For some years, Japan has pursued its own missile defense system in cooperation with the United States. The Japanese government claims that the missile defense (JMD) program is purely defensive and will not pose a threat to other countries. JMD may seem justified by North Korea's development of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. However, neighboring states regarded it as a sign of military ambition and revival of Japan's prewar militarism. The development and deployment of JMD could have grave implications for regional and global security. This dissertation focuses on these implications, domestic and international political considerations and the future direction …

El Otro Encuentro: Gigi Oltavaro-Hormillosa’S "Neo-Queer Precolonial Imagining", Gina Velasco Jan 2008

El Otro Encuentro: Gigi Oltavaro-Hormillosa’S "Neo-Queer Precolonial Imagining", Gina Velasco

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

This essay examines the performance and video art piece Cosmic Blood, by Gigi Otalvaro-Hormillosa, a queer Colombian and Filipina American artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It argues that Cosmic Blood is a performative intervention into dominant modes of reading the racialized and gendered Filipina body, as well as a critique of absolutist notions of national and ethnic belonging. Cosmic Blood challenges the inherent heteronormativity and masculinism of dominant notions of nation and kinship, accomplishing this imaginative intervention by its retroping of the past through a lens of queer desire. Within Otalvaro-Hormillosa’s retelling of the moment of first …

Rolling Adf Tests: Detecting Rational Bubbles In Greater China Stock Markets, Peng Huang Jan 2008

Rolling Adf Tests: Detecting Rational Bubbles In Greater China Stock Markets, Peng Huang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Following Phillips, Wu and Yu (2007), this paper extends their bubble detecting work to several Greater China stock markets. Two alternative bubble detecting methods, the forward recursive ADF tests raised by Phillips et al. (2007) and the modified version, forward rolling ADF tests, are implemented and compared. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to determine the critical values of the ADF statistic under different sample size. Empirical results demonstrate that only rolling ADF tests are successful in detecting rational bubbles by overcoming the problem of periodically collapsing bubble. As we have expected, bubbles in China Mainland stock market are detected. Out …

Under The Iron Thumb: Forced Labor In Myanmar, Anil Raj Jan 2008

Under The Iron Thumb: Forced Labor In Myanmar, Anil Raj

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The fight for human rights in Myanmar goes back to its independence in 1948. The Myanmar military (tatmadaw) has engaged in shocking violations of almost every right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The issue of forced labor, however, is of particular concern. Forced labor is employed primarily in development projects, agricultural enterprises, and the military. It is used to impose collective punishment on civilians, to build highly profitable development that strengthens military rule, and to allow the military access and logistical support in the most remote regions of insurgent-occupied territories. Forced labor is a central means …

The Dark Side Of Labor In China, Karine Lepillez Jan 2008

The Dark Side Of Labor In China, Karine Lepillez

Human Rights & Human Welfare

With a population of 1.3 billion and a gross domestic product growing at an impressive rate of 10 percent per year, China has quickly become one of the largest contributors to the global market. Deng Xiaoping’s reforms of the late 1970s and early 1980s vastly improved the country’s standard of living and made economic development possible; unfortunately, China’s remarkable growth has a dark side: the forced labor of men, women and children. The country’s unique combination of Communist ideology and decentralized economic power has contributed to the use of both state-sanctioned and unsanctioned forced labor, the latter of which is …

Advocating At The Margins: Women’S Ngos In China, Ling U Jan 2008

Advocating At The Margins: Women’S Ngos In China, Ling U

Honors Theses

The development of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in China has been unprecedented in the past fifteen years. The 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW) and parallel NGO Forum in Beijing, China, opened the door for the first time for the establishment of women’s NGOs in China. This paper examines the development of Chinese women’s NGOs with a particular focus on two organizations in Beijing for marginalized female populations: one focusing on lesbians and the other helping women with HIV/AIDS. I examine the structure and growth of each NGO; however, on a more personal level and perhaps more importantly, I use …

Sino-American Relations In The 21st Century: The Political, Social And Economic Realities Of China's Rise, Larry Buster Stewart Jan 2008

Sino-American Relations In The 21st Century: The Political, Social And Economic Realities Of China's Rise, Larry Buster Stewart

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This paper examines the political, social and economic realities of Chinas rise in an effort to better understand the potential evolution of Sino-American relations. Engagement reasons a prosperous China will become democratic and socially pluralistic, but by observing the development of freedom and rule of law in China and comparing their relationship with economic growth, trade and investment, this analysis challenges the idea that China will have to democratize to meet the pressures of globalization. Economic growth has legitimatized the authoritarian regime in China, freedom is not related to decisions of trade and investment, and the Chinese people have not …

Economic Developments In Tajikistan, Tyler Haupert Jan 2008

Economic Developments In Tajikistan, Tyler Haupert

Global Tides

Poor nations often leave countless young males without an education, a stable family, or a strong government to follow. These conditions make the choice to join a group of religious radicals appealing. Tajikistan, a country of over seven million located just north of Afghanistan in Central Asia, is surrounded by war torn, politically unstable neighbors and fits the profile of a hotbed for religious radicalism. While the country has avoided a large-scale international war, political instability and economic deficiencies have left Tajikistan primed for future conflict. The situation presents an intriguing study for those concerned with humanitarian issues and those …

Pond-Women Revelations: The Subaltern Registers In Maithil Women's Expressive Forms, Coralynn V. Davis Jan 2008

Pond-Women Revelations: The Subaltern Registers In Maithil Women's Expressive Forms, Coralynn V. Davis

Faculty Journal Articles

Ponds are ubiquitous in the Maithil region of Nepal, and they figure prominently in folk narratives and ceremonial paintings produced by women there. I argue that in Maithil women's folktales, as in their paintings, the trope of ponds shifts the imaginative register toward women's perspectives and the importance of women's knowledge and influence in shaping Maithil society, even as this register shift occurs within plots featuring male protagonists. I argue further that in the absence of a habit of exegesis in their expressive arts, and given the cross-referential, dialogic nature of expressive practices, a methodology that draws into interpretive conversation …

Ethnic Differentials In Parental Health Seeking For Childhood Illness In Vietnam, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, James F. Phillips Jan 2008

Ethnic Differentials In Parental Health Seeking For Childhood Illness In Vietnam, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, James F. Phillips

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Vietnam's sustained investment in primary healthcare since the onset of socialism has lowered infant and childhood mortality rates and improved life expectancy, exceeding progress achieved in other poor countries with comparable levels of income per capita. The recent introduction of user fees for primary healthcare services has generated concern that economic policies may have adversely affected health-seeking behavior and health outcomes of the poor, particularly among impoverished families who are members of socially marginalized minority groups. This paper examines this debate by analyzing parental recall of illness and care-seeking for sick children under the age of 5 years recorded by …

Russia And The Cis In 2007 : Putin's Final Year?, Charles E. Ziegler

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Russia in 2007 moved further away from a constitutional order governed by the rule of law as President Vladimir Putin's second term drew to a close and the country prepared for parliamentary and presidential elections. High oil and gas prices buoyed the economy, but little progress was made in addressing Russia's serious social problems. In foreign policy, confrontation with the West was balanced by excellent relations with most of Asia.

Elites, Angi-Yi, And Chinese Nationalist Movements In Bangkok's Chinatown, 1903-1949, Supang Chantavanich

Asian Review

Sampheng, the Chinese quarter of Bangkok, was a site of political activity among the overseas Chinese from the early twentieth century until the Chinese revolution in 1949. This article traces the main events and main characters involved. Opposition to the Japanese and secret societies were major tools that Chinese elites in Sampheng used in order to foster Chinese nationalism.

The Narcotics Problems In Burma: Insurgency, Drugs, Politics, And Poverty, Jesse Earle Odum Jan 2008

The Narcotics Problems In Burma: Insurgency, Drugs, Politics, And Poverty, Jesse Earle Odum

Asian Review

The illegal drug problem in Burma is alarming and affects not only Southeast Asia, but the entire world. The problem has been shaped by decades of internal conflict. Fighting between ethnic groups began before Burma's independence. The country has not had a moment of peace since independence from British colonization. The aggressive military junta continues to destroy the licit economy in Burma and continues to destroy opportunities for the country to receive much needed foreign aid and assistance. The military government has created an environment that condones and indirectly encourages involvement in the drug trade and other illicit activities. The …

Khmer Rouge Children's Songs, Thun Theara Jan 2008

Khmer Rouge Children's Songs, Thun Theara

Asian Review

During the Khmer Rouge years (1975-9), children were taught to sing songs which indoctrinated and inculcated them to serve the revolutionary glory. At the same time, children were made to toil very hard for long hours every day with empty stomachs. The content of the songs was intended to inspire children to work for the Khmer Rouge in building a new society. These songs linger in the memory of the present-living "children."
