This research intends to estimate vulnerability to poverty, specify vulnerable groups and identify strategies that households use to address the exposure to risk of rural farm households in Northeastern and Northern Thailand. This study was conducted in four provinces of Thailand in the Northeastern region (Kalasin and Buri Ram provinces) and the Northern region (Chiangmai and Nan provinces). Data on a total of 1,400 households was collected in the year 2014. The research methodology applied was the feasible generalized least square (FGLS) method, which was employed to determine how log consumption impacts the welfare status of households. This paper aims to understand the reform-led administrative capacity for service delivery in Bangladesh. It also explores the links between administrative reform and service delivery capacity in the context of local administration relating to MDGs universal primary education. It represents a qualitative empirical study with gleaned data and seeks to answer the question of whether the Bangladeshi administration is sufficiently capable of delivering public services. Perceptions Of Health Practices And Interactions With The Us Healthcare System Among Bhutanese Refugees: A Qualitative Approach, Amy E. Szajna

Purpose

The aim of this pilot study was to explore health practices of Bhutanese refugees and their interactions with the US healthcare system and providers.

Methodology

Researchers conducted 12 in-depth interviews and 7 patient-provider observation units as part of this descriptive qualitative study.

Results

Participants identified individual definitions of health and behaviors they value to maintain health. They identified significant trust and faith in their healthcare provider and valued provider-directed suggestions. Participants cited concerns with patient-provider communication resulting from limited English proficiency and frequent changes in primary care providers.

The introduction of the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) has been generating considerable debate and feedback. Some of the concerns raised include whether the bill unduly restricts the freedom of expression. In focusing on the hate speech provisions of the POFMA, this legislation comment situates the criticisms within the larger framework of international human rights law and international practices and proposes some ways forward to improve the regulatory framework for online hate speech.

This article considers two recent developments in Singapore private international law: the establishment of the Singapore International Commercial Court and the enactment of the Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements 2005 into Singapore law. These two developments are part of Singapore’s strategy to promote itself as an international dispute resolution hub and are underscored by giving an enhanced role to party autonomy. This article examines the impact of these two developments on the traditional rules of private international law and whether they achieve the stated aim of positioning Singapore as a major player in the international litigation arena.

There were over 40 torts cases in 2019, of which just over half involved the tort of negligence. Unlike previous years, this year's review will deal only with the ten most significant judgments. A full list of torts cases is included at the end of this chapter for the convenience of readers. Of the ten cases, not surprisingly, five of them are claims in negligence. Of these, three involve medical negligence and two involve negligent misrepresentation causing economic loss. This paper conducts a comparative study on the performance of various machine learning(“ML”) approaches for classifying judgments into legal areas. Using a novel dataset of 6,227 Singapore Supreme Court judgments, we investigate how state-of-the-art NLP methods compare against traditional statistical models when applied to a legal corpus that comprised few but lengthy documents. All approaches tested, including topic model, word embedding, and language model-based classifiers, performed well with as little as a few hundred judgments. However, more work needs to be done to optimize state-of-the-art methods for the legal domain.

The year 2018 produced only a handful of cases on the law of unjust enrichment and restitution. However, two are seminal cases and of note to the entire common law world: Ochroid Trading Ltd v Chua Siok Lui1 (“Ochroid”) and Turf Club Auto Emporium Pte Ltd v Yeo Boong Hua2 (“Turf Club”). Ochroid dealt with the hotly debated topic of the illegality defence against a claim in unjust enrichment for the recovery of money paid pursuant to an illegal contract.
