This contribution presents the possibilities for anthropological and neo-Marxist media within the hugely expanding sector of Chinese communication studies. China has sourced mostly from the American positivist tradition but is increasingly ­taking on board European critical thinking but it also needs to absorb some of the depth and diversity of indigenous scholarship existing in Chinese.

Determinants Of Urban Land Supply In People's Republic Of China: How Do Political Factors Matter?, Wen-Tai Hsu, Xiaolu Li, Yang Tang, Jing Wu

This paper explores whether and how corruption and competition-for-promotion motives affect urban land supply in the People's Republic of China. Conditional on demand-side factors, we find that corruption is highly correlated with an increase in land supply. The corruption effects are strongest for commercial land, followed by residential land, and then industrial land. To shed light on the competition motives among prefectural leaders, we examine how the number of years in office affects land supply and distinguish among different hypotheses. Our empirical results show robust rising trends in land sales. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that among prefectural …

These information resources are produced by military and government agencies from multiple countries, multinational public policy research institutions, popular and scholarly journals, and Internet resources featuring text, data, webcasts, and imagery. Understanding Anti-Government Sentiment And The Public's Anti-Corruption Behavior: The Roles Of Perceived Ethics Failure, Emotional Leadership, And Communication Strategy, Soojin Kim, Laishan Tam, Seung Bach

This study tests relationships among anti-governmentsentiment, their antecedents and their outcomes. A Web survey was conducted in India,South Korea, and the United States. Results show that the public’s perceptionsof their government’s ethics failure, lack of emotional leadership, and use ofbuffering strategy as a communication strategy for the public are related totheir anti-government sentiments against their incumbent governments. Inaddition, positive associations were found between anti-government sentimentand the public’s communicative and behavioral intention for anti-corruptionbehavior. Theoretical and empirical implications are discussed.

"Millennials"—broadly defined as those born between 1980 and 2000— are a dynamic driving force behind any country’s economic progress, but particularly so in the Philippines. Making up about 50 per cent of the national population, Philippine millennials are mainly employed in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which in turn account for over 99 per cent of all local businesses.

China, the largest carbon dioxide emitter in the world, has faced environmental pressures both internationally and domestically over the last ten years. In early 2011, the Chinese government approved a carbon emissions trading program in seven cities and provinces, and started planning a national emissions trading framework. This thesis reviews these pilot programs and examines the issues that underlie them. Drawing lessons from the U.S. Acid Rain Program, the European Union’s ETS, and California’s CAT, the three largest emissions trading frameworks in the world, I find that: (1) lack of trades in China’s pilot programs is a consequence of permit …

This dissertation looks at how enhanced political participation opportunities can increase individual liberty and improve public-sector reform efforts. It blends political theory with contemporary concerns for individual well-being and government accountability. To do this, several research methodologies are used, including normative, qualitative process-tracing, and quantitative analysis.

First, the dissertation draws insights from ancient and modern political philosophy and the political thought and example of Jane Addams in 19th Century Chicago. It begins with Josiah Ober’s work on civic dignity, which he defines as “equal high standing” among citizens, marked by “non-infantilization and non-humiliation.” This definition is a useful starting point …

Confucius Classroom is an educational institute established in primary and secondary schools in various countries including Thailand to spread Chinese culture and language. At present, research on Confucius Classrooms in Thailand is little, so this study attempts to examine the approaches used by Confucius Classrooms in teaching Chinese language and spreading Chinese culture in Thai schools and to what extent they contribute to mutual understanding between Chinese and Thai teachers. Data collection was done at Confucius Classrooms in four sample schools by in-depth interviews, questionnaires and tests.
