In the opening scenes of Shuibo Wang’s 2005 documentary, “They Chose China,” American soldiers dressed in the long, padded winter coats of the Chinese military cluster around a microphone to explain the international threat posed by McCarthy’s witch hunts and U.S. intolerance for freedom and democracy. The documentary tells the story of these twenty-one American soldiers, held as POWs by the Chinese during the Korean War, who refused repatriation after the 1953 armistice.

Most Taiwan observers expected a convincing KMT victory in last Saturday’s Legislative Yuan elections, perhaps even a landslide. What we got was an avalanche, with the KMT garnering 81 of 113 seats (71.68%), as opposed to a paltry 27 for the DPP. The scale of the rout was unprecedented, especially since the KMT ended up with just over 51% of the popular vote, as opposed to approximately 37% for the DPP, numbers that do not differ that dramatically from those of past elections.

Identity In Crisis: The Impact Of Education On Ethnic Culture Among The Muser, Nguyen Quang Dung

Asian Review

This paper examines the impact of Thai education on ethnic culture through a case study of the Muser in Amphoe Mae Sot, Tak Province, Thailand. It also studies the process of culture preservation, integration and assimilation of Muser hill people through formal, non-formal and informal education. The study finds that besides knowledge conveyed in central Thai language, Thai identity is inculcated in students through Buddhist teaching, mainstream ethical and moral values, and nationalist ideology. Elements of Muser traditional culture such as cuisine, music, folklore, religion, language and costumes are maintained less by young Muser in comparison with their seniors.

Security Regime Or "Security Community"? Classifying Asean In The Spectrum Of Regional Security Organizations, Deniz Kocak

The ASEAN community comprises the ASEAN economic community, ASEAN social and cultural community, and ASEAN security community. Particularly the ASEAN security community is controversially debated among scholars. By focusing on key variables such as the states' sovereignty, the societal level and the military collaboration among ASEAN, the article assesses the level and limitations of ASEAN's intrastate cooperation and classifies ASEAN in the spectrum of regional security structures. It is argued here that ASEAN forms a security regime rather than a security community and that the prospects for a mature security community in the next decade are far from reality.

This project studies the ideational factors influencing Japanese foreign aid policy. It builds on previous research in political science on perception and foreign policy decision-making, Japanese political economy, economic and technological development, foreign aid, and in anthropology on perception, worldview, and international development.

The main goal of the research is to answer the question of how Japan's historical experiences with technology, development, and foreign relations (and key leaders' views of those areas) from 1850 to 1945 have influenced current aid policies. For some years, Japan has pursued its own missile defense system in cooperation with the United States. The Japanese government claims that the missile defense (JMD) program is purely defensive and will not pose a threat to other countries. JMD may seem justified by North Korea's development of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. However, neighboring states regarded it as a sign of military ambition and revival of Japan's prewar militarism. The development and deployment of JMD could have grave implications for regional and global security. This essay examines the performance and video art piece Cosmic Blood, by Gigi Otalvaro-Hormillosa, a queer Colombian and Filipina American artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It argues that Cosmic Blood is a performative intervention into dominant modes of reading the racialized and gendered Filipina body, as well as a critique of absolutist notions of national and ethnic belonging. Cosmic Blood challenges the inherent heteronormativity and masculinism of dominant notions of nation and kinship, accomplishing this imaginative intervention by its retroping of the past through a lens of queer desire. Rolling Adf Tests: Detecting Rational Bubbles In Greater China Stock Markets, Peng Huang

Following Phillips, Wu and Yu (2007), this paper extends their bubble detecting work to several Greater China stock markets. Two alternative bubble detecting methods, the forward recursive ADF tests raised by Phillips et al. (2007) and the modified version, forward rolling ADF tests, are implemented and compared. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to determine the critical values of the ADF statistic under different sample size. Empirical results demonstrate that only rolling ADF tests are successful in detecting rational bubbles by overcoming the problem of periodically collapsing bubble. The fight for human rights in Myanmar goes back to its independence in 1948. The Myanmar military (tatmadaw) has engaged in shocking violations of almost every right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The issue of forced labor, however, is of particular concern. Forced labor is employed primarily in development projects, agricultural enterprises, and the military. It is used to impose collective punishment on civilians, to build highly profitable development that strengthens military rule, and to allow the military access and logistical support in the most remote regions of insurgent-occupied territories. Sampheng, the Chinese quarter of Bangkok, was a site of political activity among the overseas Chinese from the early twentieth century until the Chinese revolution in 1949. This article traces the main events and main characters involved. Opposition to the Japanese and secret societies were major tools that Chinese elites in Sampheng used in order to foster Chinese nationalism.

Fighting between ethnic groups began before Burma's independence. The country has not had a moment of peace since independence from British colonization.
