In Thailand, one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, Thais are no longer merely “hosts” to foreign tourists but also to their compatriots who have become tourists themselves. The rising significance of domestic tourism reveals the need to critically rethink notions of the familiar and the strange in tourism studies. Based on ethnographic fi eldwork in Northeastern Thailand, I argue that Othering is not limited to transnational host-guest-interactions. In the small town I studied domestic tourist encounters were similarly embedded in power relations, namely in the dominant discourses of urban-rural relations in contemporary Thailand. This research aims to identify key factors aff ecting tenant companies in participating in eco-industrial development in Amata Nakorn industrial estate in Thailand. The research investigated the eff ects of Japanese enterprises in domestic eco-industrial development. The image of Bangkok as a "Buddhist City" in Asian countries was propagated through the cultural diplomacy of King Chulalongkorn. In the case of Japan, Nittaiji Temple in Nagoya is the representative of a Thai-Japanese relationship developed from such a Buddhist idea. Much iconic Buddhist art was created to symbolically present Thai-Japanese Buddhist relations. In the reign of King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V), Japan was seen as a country which contributed to the development of traditional needlework and weaving for Th ai women in several ways. In addition to being the source of knowledge for Th ai women who studied further in the country, Japan also sent experts to Th ailand to teach Th ai women. Th ese contributions helped Th ai women develop expertise in traditional needlework and weaving that enhanced Thai women's status in that period.

This article aims to investigate the Thai novel entitled Chungking Sexpress by Anusorn Tipayanon in terms of its themes, the devices employed to present these themes and the role of the novel as a forum in which memories of the Second World War are presented. The transition from socialism to state capitalism in the Lao PDR's socio-economic development has not as yet entirely resulted in the abandonment of the Suffi ciency Economy Philosophy (SEP)-like "ethically-based" development policies but today these policies struggle to gain traction alongside the confl icting conventional development polices of the very infl uential Lao PDR development partners. This study aims at investigating the similarities and differences between Thai and Japanese smiling facial expressions. The interview was conducted with Thai and Japanese participants. The results show that Thais tend to experience happiness in situations related to excitement and stability signifi cantly more than the Japanese, while the Japanese tend to experience happiness in situations related to relief and self-concept to a signifi cantly greater degree than Thais. The results also indicate that, in situations where they do not feel happy, Thais tend to smile when they are greeting or apologizing signifi cantly more than the Japanese, who tend …

This paper is based on the findings from fieldwork conducted in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) in 2013 and 2014, and argues that the movement of new Chinese migration is an integral part of Chinas capital flow of investment, trade and economic aid. The historical city of Hue in central Vietnam retains the imprint of the Nguyen Era (1802-1945), when many temples were built and restored. This paper examines the influence of architectural features of the Thai Hoa Palace in the royal citadel on the main shrines of Hue temples. This study is based on field surveys of square-enclosure Khau ( ) temples in Hue city, which share similar styles of "double house, one foundation," "one poem, one-drawing," two-layered roof structures, and symbols of decorative motifs at the corner of the roof. Over the past two decades, communities in the border areas of Tak Province, Thailand, and in neighboring districts of Myanmar, have established a primary healthcare system. Conflict, displacement and institutional neglect have left this region of Eastern Myanmar without functioning public health services. Forced displacement and statelessness excluded these same communities from health services in Thailand. This paper presents two short case studies that describe how the network prioritizes access to basic care at the village level, with ethnic and community organizations training village health workers to provide health education and to manage common diseases. With the advent of reform in Myanmar, Thailand hopes to be able to repatriate the large number of displaced persons from Myanmar. However, a survey shows that most Myanmar displaced persons do not yet have enough confidence about their security after repatriation. This article sets out the conditions and framework under which planning for repatriation should proceed. A human rights approach is needed to protect the rights of refugees. At present, the human rights mechanisms within ASEAN are not strong enough, and ASEAN is reluctant to intervene in controversial bilateral issues. This articles demonstrate the unevenness of socioeconomic development under neoliberalism by utilizing the term "neoliberal involution." After Thailand shifted from import-substitution to export-orientation in the 1980s, industries need to achieve competitive low cost of production. In the decades since, an influx of migrant laborers has fulfilled this condition. Research in three different Thai provinces shows that migrant communities are subject to a process dubbed "neoliberal involution." First, migrant laborers are forced to accept high economic risks because of the low political power to negotiate in the labor market. The Philippines and Vietnam valued their maritime connections with great powers during the Cold War and have continued to do so after if ended. In the bipolar context of the Cold War, both Manila and Hanoi eventually permitted Washington and Moscow to station naval forces on their coasts. As tension between Washington and Moscow diminished significantly in the early 1990s, maritime security interests of the Philippines and Vietnam changed. The withdrawal of US and Russian naval forces from the South China Sea left China without rivals. Beijing then emerged as an un-checked naval power in the South China Sea. US-China …

The paper examines how migrant domestic workers, children and adults, make their ways to Egypt and secure employment. The paper also analyzes international legal instruments that constitute the international legal framework governing migration and trafficking to draw connections between these legal instruments and the status of Asian migrant domestic workers in Egypt. This paper is based on qualitative research conducted between 2012 and 2013 with 16 child migrant workers and 25 adult migrant workers selected using snowball sampling. This study examines the similarities and differences between the Yoshida Ryusei festival in Japan and Pa-Aw Bang-fai rocket festival in Thailand. The theoretical framework of this study is drawn from Tsuneo Sogawa's "Culture Complex of Sport" which focuses on three aspects, namely socio-cultural, technologicalcultural and spiritual-cultural.
