In reviewing GTU’s Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU) history, one sees where this international honor society has experienced periods of sustained growth, and it continues to play an important role in geography’s success (Maxfield, 2003). And today, we not only celebrate the first 75 years of GTU’s history but also we begin to look forward to a new generation of college students, a new generation of geographers—a generation some have referred to as the millennials—with their changing values and expectations. We examined relations between foreign funding of U.S. colleges and universities and campus political developments. Seven studies investigated associations between foreign funding and campus liberal democratic norms, specifically, deterioration of free speech and academic freedom, and presence of antisemitism. Study I found that 349 colleges and universities received a total of almost $18 billion from foreign sources between 2014 and 2019. Study II examined relationships of foreign funding to campus deplatforming of speakers and punitive actions for speech protected by academic freedom. This policy audit explores the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security in Canada, with a focus on immigrants, refugees, and other marginalized communities, particularly in Ontario and the Waterloo Region. COVID-19 significantly exacerbated food insecurity in the country, adding to existing vulnerabilities especially in historically disadvantaged communities, who already faced barriers such as low-income employment, poor housing, and limited healthcare access. COVID-19 responses, including lockdowns and travel restrictions, disrupted food production, processing, and retail services. The supply chain disruptions, along with inflation, drove food prices to their highest levels in decades. Economic access to food became a pressing …

The Alabama Underwater or Drowned Forest is a well-preserved Late Pleistocene (dated to 72–56 ± 8 ka, 2σ) terrestrial landform on the northern Gulf of Mexico continental shelf that provides geomorphic and ecosystem information rarely preserved during the glacial intervals. Stumps of bald cypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.) trees were exposed in ∼18 m of water following Hurricane Ivan in 2004. This research investigates geomorphic changes to the Mississippi-Alabama-Florida (MAFLA) sand sheet, which presents as shore-oblique Holocene sand ridges, and the exposure and burial of tree stumps following the passage of Hurricane Sally in 2020 using repeat sidescan and bathymetric …

Recent advancements in information and communication technology have significantly enhanced access to extensive geospatial data, presenting a valuable opportunity to leverage big spatial data for improved modeling and predictive capabilities in natural disaster risk assessment. This paper explores the integration of a comprehensive dataset comprising historical landslide events and various geo-environmental variables within a spatially explicit machine learning framework. The study empirically demonstrates that incorporating big spatial data allows a more nuanced understanding of local variations and spatial dependencies. Personal relevance is a key driver of individual climate action. It is also related to media use and interpersonal communication, which the current study examines from two perspectives. First, individuals may find climate change personally relevant because they experience it vicariously through the media and other information sources. Second, they may engage with climate change information because the issue is personally relevant. This study tested these models using structural equation modeling of online survey data from representative samples in Singapore (n = 1,997) and the United States (n = 2,009). Findings supported both models, albeit the first one more strongly. …

The Republic of Korea (or South Korea) is located in the extreme northeastern region of the East Asian Monsoon climatic zone. Summer (June–September) is the rainy season in the country, which accounts for more than 60 percent of the annual precipitation. Using 50 years of summer (June–September) rainfall data (1951–2000) at 23 stations, this paper presents the geographic distribution of summer rainfall and its coefficient of variation in South Korea; and the long-term trend of summer rainfall at four selected stations. The study of retail geography is moving beyond an orthodox, spatial science tradition to include a consideration of the cultural and symbolic dimensions of retailing and consumption. This paper contributes to this emerging literature by exploring the cultural politics of retail change. The entry of a large format (or “big box”) retailer into a community is conceptualized as a socially contested process open to a variety of responses from local stakeholders. The Platte Purchase region did not become part of the state of Missouri until 1837. Prior to its annexation the area had been part of the territory reserved for Native American relocation. By 1850, the region had attracted over 40,000 pioneers from all areas of the globe. The majority of the early settlers followed the major river routes as they migrated west to the Platte region. The census data indicates that upon arrival many of these early pioneers clustered with other pioneers of similar heritage. As a result, there is a north-south settlement gradation present. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered severe shocks to food security for marginalized populations in urban areas. Somali migrants and refugees in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighbourhood faced disproportionate impacts due to strict containment measures, disrupted food supply chains, and the shutdown of informal markets. These disruptions exacerbated existing socio-economic inequities, leading to heightened food insecurity. This paper examines the multi-dimensional effects of the pandemic on the food security of Somali migrants and refugees, focusing on their access to informal food networks and the broader socio-economic factors influencing their livelihoods. This study considers the possible “migration” of urban street patterns associated with discrete east coast culture regions to America’s trans-Appalachian interior during the 19th century. Also examined was the possibility that these street patterns became less “culturallybound,“ or more admixed, over time. Ohio, one of the first (and most culturally diverse) trans-Appalachian states, was the focus of the study. What is a mentor? I serve as a mentor for two groups: one, to offer advice, to give counsel, and basically to help out new employees within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); and the other, as an advisor for the Louisiana Environmental Education Association working with new teachers. With USGS, the mentoring is a function of being designated a leader within the Bureau. Because of the size of the USGS, many individuals are mentored by long distance telephone conversations or email communication. Nick had been our dear friend and colleague for more than three decades. O. Orland Maxfield, born in 1925, was raised on a farm near Robinson, Illinois, and he always referred to Robinson as his home. His father was a Methodist minister who died when Orland was eleven. His mother, who graduated from Northwestern University, raised him in a disciplined manner. This shows in the fact that he earned his Bachelor’s degree at George Peabody College for Teachers in three years with a double major in Geography and English, graduating in 1945. He earned his Master’s of Arts degree in Geography at Ohio State University in one year.
