Classifying Oregon Lake-Watershed Ecosystems For Regional Water Resources Assessment, Randall Alan Jones

Natural lake-watershed ecosystems in Oregon compose a diverse and valuable assemblage of land and water resources. With an increasing demand on lakes for recreation, water supplies, and aesthetic values and an increase in available data on Oregon lake systems, there is a need for applicable and timely scientific water management information about lake conditions statewide. This thesis is an attempt to summarize some of the data collected on natural Oregon lake-watershed ecosystems.

The inventory and condition survey of rangelands in the Carnarvon Basin, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1980 and 1982, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The area surveyed covers …

Spatial And Temporal Characteristics Of Surface Air Temperature For Portland, Oregon, Li-Min Yang

This study examines the spatial and temporal characteristics of the surface air temperature in Portland, Oregon. Spatial temperature patterns indicate that the dominant control factors on seasonal temperature distribution are local topography, elevation, and urban-rural differences in surface structure. A heat island exists in the Portland area; the intensity of the heat island rang€s from 4° to 10° F, and varies throughout the year. The strongest heat island is found in the July minimum temperature. Temperature distribution in Portland and the adjacent area is affected by winds and rainy conditions, but less influenced under overcast skies. The long-term temperature over …

Hydrogeologic investigations were conducted on the drainage systems of an area of the Pennyroyal sinkhole plain of south central Kentucky. The degree of karstification of five area streams was studied to develop an understanding of the evolution of drainage as the landscape changes from a sandstone caprock plateau to a limestone sinkhole plain. The Chester Upland, capped by the Big Clifty Sandstone, possesses predominantly surface drainage and the Pennyroyal Plain, formed on Mississippian limestones, possesses considerable subsurface drainage. As the Chester Upland Escarpment retreats and surface streams are onto the limestones, the streams evolve to become subsurface streams. The five …

There is a class of satellite microwave scatterometers that return oceanographic information which includes wind vectors with directional ambiguity. The first part of the ambiguity removal process is to reduce the data to a directional ambiguity of 180°. This thesis shows that wind direction change contains the information required for streamline ambiguity removal and that syntactic pattern recognition techniques can be used to locate the areas of wind direction change. Spreading the information along the areas of wind direction change results in the removal of the streamline ambiguity. The algorithm is implemented and the results are presented showing that it …

The visual quality of a river basin and its associated properties can be identified, evaluated and integrated into the landscape planning process. The model developed provides a quantitative methodology for determining visual quality on the basis of available Geographic Information System factors. These factors are utilized to develop the preference attributes, COLOR, FORM, TEXTURE and LINE, which are associated with the assessment of visual quality. The preference attributes are then combined through a decision making process into a continuum of DISTINCTIVE, GOOD, AVERAGE and MINIMAL visual quality and is expressed digitally in map format. The search for an alternative to oil dominated political and economic thinking during the 1970’s and continues in this decade. In Ontario, one such alternative is methanol, which could possibly be supplied in large quantities from hybrid poplar biomass plantations. While the nature of these plantations has been debated at greath length, the exact quantity and location of land that could be available for plantations in Ontario has not been identified.

Effects Of Urbanization On The Hydrologic Regime Of Johnson Creek, Portland, Oregon, William Vandewater Clement

The Johnson Creek watershed, Portland, Oregon, has undergone urbanization at an increasing rate. Excessive flooding has occurred in the lower portions of the watershed, resulting in an estimated 1.5 million dollars worth of flood losses annually. In attempts to mitigate the flooding damages millions of dollars have been spent to channelize the creek, and over 200 thousand dollars has been spent during the last 20 years on preliminary feasibility studies alone.

Das Herbarium der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg besitzt eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Pflanzen aus der Mongolei. Das im wesentlichen während gemeinsamer deutsch-mongolischer biologischer Expeditionen gesammelte Material liegt als selbständige Sammlung vor. Sie enthält ca. 8000 Bögen höherer Pflanzen und umfaßt ca. 1300 determinierte Arten. Ein bedeutender Teil wurde von Spezialisten bestimmt. Umfangreich sind auch die Aufsammlungen von Flechten und Moosen , geringer die von Pilzen. Es konnten hierbei wie bei den höheren Pflanzen zahlreiche Erstnachweise erbracht werden.

In den Jahren 1976 bis 1978 führten Biologen der Martin-Luther-Universität HalleWittenberg und der Staatlichen Mongolischen Universität Ulan-Bator Arbeiten zur Höhenstufenzonierung des Charchiraa-Gebirges in der Nordw estmongolei d urch. In der Steppen- (1340 m), Lärchenwald- (2150 m) und alpinen Zone (2375 m) wurden Meßstationen errichtet, in denen über mehrere Wochen der Monate Juni bis August gearbeitet wurde. Im Verlaufe der 1977 und 1978 in drei verschiedenen Höhenstufen im Gebirge Charchiraa-uul, Aimak Uvs, im NW der Mongolei durchgeführten ökologischen Untersuchungen konnten auch 64 Arten mit 1539 Exemplaren aus 15 Familien d er Heteroptera erbeutet werden. Die Fänge wurden vor allem mit Hlife von Barberfallen und Gelbschalen erzielt. Am stärksten vertreten waren die beiden Familien der Miridae und Lygaeidae, von den übrigen Familien wurden j eweils nur wenige (eine bis höchstens vier) Arten gefangen. Seit jeher wußten die Menschen den hohen Wert des Baragschun zu schätzen und dieses Material zu verwenden. Die Könige und der Adel haben dieses magische Heilmittel zusammen mit Gold und Edelsteinen aufbewahrt. Определе ние видов ковыля, особенно в нецветущем состоянии, встречается с некоторыми трудностями.

Мы попытались выяснить некоторых отличий в анатомических строениях листа у некоторых видов ковыля, что облегчило бы выяснению дополнительного критерия в их определении.

The investgations, developments and guidelines for several hydrologic modeling strategies are presented. Investigations were conducted to determine appropriate event curve numbers for surface mined disturbed watersheds; and performance of four synthetic unit hydrograph models (SCS curvilinear, SCS single triangle, Williams and TVA double triangle) on 38 USDA experimental watersheds in 14 physiographic provinces using in excess of 270 events. A second test using only the SCS curvilinear unit hydrograph on 11 small watersheds and 48 events was conducted to investigate the excess rainfall pattern simulated with the curve number model. Geologists have used numerous tYPes of remote sensors for the interpretation of earth surface features. Two of the more recently developed remote sensors are SLAR (side-looking airborne radar) and LANDSAT (ERTS, Earth's Resources Technology Satellite, renamed L~~DSAT).
