Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe

Northeast Brazil is a region characterized by economic poverty and human misery. Poor ecological conditions contribute to the nature of the dilemma, but another factor in the apparent cultural stagnation of the Northeast, may be the persistence of values and social practices traditionally aligned with the colonial sugar plantation system. Thus, this thesis represents an examination of the continuity of a given pattern, the man/patron relationship. This pattern is a contemporary parallel to the master/slave relationship which was the key to understanding of the social system of the colonial period. From the Resources for Tomorrow Conference held in 1961 came the recommendation for more research in the field of Recreation. With this challenge the thesis outlines various studies dealing with the classification and inventory of recreation lands. Because of the lack of correlation found to exist between the expected location of recreation sites based upon a capability classification and the observed locations of inventoried recreation sites, further analysis was undertaken. The results indicate that the potential of an outdoor rural recreation site is largely a function of historical, physical, accessibility, population, activity/facility and economic/political factors. Overbreeding has created a surplus of nearly 50 million dogs and cats. These animals are unwanted and homeless. Some of them--the lucky ones--will get a quick, merciful death at humane society shelters. Most, however, haven't even the hope of being reached and protected from suffering in the 3,000 or more communities without humane societies. Instead, they roam the country--starving, thirsting, suffering from disease and injury.

In Allegan County, Michigan, there exists an area of land known as the Allegan State Forest (Figs. 1 and 2). The Forest compromises 35,755 acres of land and is located just west of the city of Allegan.¹ It is an area primarily noted for its forestry, wildfire conservation, and recreational facilities. Before becoming a state forest and prior to the 1930's, this land passed through sequential occupance by Indians, pioneers, lumberman, and farmers. Sawmilling in Minnesota started about the time of settlement and, until 1870, mainly consisted of small mills located in the southern half of the state. Mills along the Mississippi River were mainly in urban centers while the remainder were scattered and associated with the clearing of the land and the meeting of the needs of local communities. After 1870, mills become larger. Many were constructed in northern Minnesota. All used forests in the northern port of the state and reduced them so greatly that, by 1920, the mills closed and were replaced by portable sawmills.

The largest was the Pittsburgh area which included Wheeling the second was known as the Hanging Rock Iron Region, including Ashland, Ironton, and Portsmouth; and the third included the valleys of the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Green Rivers in south-western Kentucky.
