Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

Mit zwei großen komplexen biologischen Sammelexpeditionen 1962 und 1964 der Akademien der Wissenschaften der DDR und MVR in die Süd- und Westmongolei wurde der Grundstein für die kontinuierliche Entwicklung der Wissenschaftskooperation auf biologischem Gebiet zwischen beiden Staaten gelegt. Die Kollektionen wurden zum Grundstock eines aufzubauenden botanischen und zoologischen Sammlungsfundus in Ulan-Bator. Durch den Freundschaftsvertrag zwischen den Universitäiten Halle und Ulan-Bator im Jahre 1967 wurden die Kontakte neu aktiviert. Nach anfänglich sporadischen Studienaufenthalten und Expeditionsreisen von Einzelwissenschaftlern wurde das Forschungsprogramm auf biologischem Gebiet im Rahmen dieses Freundschaftsvertrages recht bald auf Schwerpunktaufgaben ausgerichtet, die sich lückenlos in das Forschungsprofil des mongolischen Vertragspartners …

Wenn die Mongolische Staatliche Universität Ulan-Bator ihrem 40. Gründungstag entgegengeht, der folgerichtig in dem revolutionären Aufbruch aus einer alten Geschichte des mongolischen Volkes in eine sozialistische Gessellschaft begründet liegt, so treffen sich seit über einem Jahrzehnt in diesem wissenschaftshistorischen Zeitraum auch Wissenschaftler und Studenten der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg mit ihren mongolischen Kollegen und Freunden der Mongolischen Staatlichen Universität Ulan-Bator zu geistiger Begegnung und gemeinsamer wissenschaftlicher Arbeit. The HSUS was one of the first national animal welfare organizations to take a long, hard look at all zoos, including roadside menageries. During the last nine years, we have worked intensively, conducting zoo inspections, public education and awareness programs, and developing a working relationship with the professional zoological community as well as U.S. Government agencies charged with the welfare of animals.

The very title of this talk makes a suggestion which must be forestalled, namely the idea that laboratory and food animals enjoy some exceptional moral status by virtue of the fact that we use them. In fact, it is extremely difficult to find any morally relevant grounds for distinguishing between food and laboratory animals and other animals and, far more dramatically, between animals and humans. The same conditions which require that we apply moral categories to humans rationally require that we apply them to animals as well. Bringing Nature Into The Zoo: Inexpensive Solutions For Zoo Environments, David Hancocks

Animals in captivity have traditionally been kept in sterile and inappropriate environments. Typically this situation still prevails in zoos. Cages are designed only for restraint of the animals, expediency for the public, and convenient maintenance by keepers. The animals' behavioral needs are often ignored. By using nature as a norm, and by using natural materials, the spatial and temporal environment of a captive animal can be easily and greatly enriched. Several examples which have been used at Woodland Park Zoological Gardens are discussed. Their application and expansion are appropriate for most urban zoos.

This thesis identifies and examines how people look for farms. In it the actual search rather than the decision to seek additional or alternative locations is the focus. It is estimated that the sample of farmers interviewed and surveyed consists of 50 per cent of those who had undergone the process of relocation/expansion in the past two years in the Niagara region of Ontario. The analytic framework used is adopted from a case study of intra-urban mobility. Therefore, this study is an attempt to transpose those urban concepts to an agricultural situation. Last year more than 13 million homeless cats and dogs were euthanized at humane societies and municipal animal shelters. As a statistic, 13 million may be meaningless. But think of it another way. Think of the 13 million as individual animals with individual personalities--each with their own beating heart, each with their own wretched story of how they found their way to the animal shelter. Each one was an individual breathing creature whose life was ended because there was no home to go to.

The condition of water resources in the rural Andean community of Berlin, Colombia, was explored for the purpose of future development in the area. Through investigation of water acquisition techniques, use, and water discharge methods, combined with analysis of chemical water quality tests, the overall pattern of water resources in the study area was revealed. Although the methods of acquiring water were not found to be especially damaging to water quality, the use, and more importantly, the methods of discharging waste water suggested a water resource base harboring certain questionable qualities. The purposes of this study are: (1) to consider factors that influenced the creation of Nolin Reservoir, and the selection of its recreation sites, (2) to consider the growth and the variations in attendance and participation in activities as a function of quantity and quality of available facilities and accessibility, and (3) to trace the changes that the creation of the reservoir has brought on the surrounding land use, value and ownership. Through the use of questionnaires, interviews and field investigations, the purposes were accomplished.

The fresh-water mussel industry of the Tennessee River is nearing an end. Overharvesting, habitat alterations, and pollution are the major contributors to the depletion of the mussel resource, upon which the shell industry is based. A history of unconcern by shell harvesters and weak conservation enforcement by governmental agencies, has left the major waterways of the United States nearly void of commercial clams. The lower Tennessee River presently supplies the mussel industry with nearly all the important species of mollusks. These animals are caught in a steel jaw trap which holds the leg in a crushing, painful grip. The objective of this research was to examine the North American residential preference surfaces of the six traditional regions of Canada. Each regional surface demonstrated a decided spatial regularity in preferences. This regularity was distorted somewhat by local biases and the location of the sample tested relative to the rest of the surface. There was a general tendency to rate the local area high and for preference to decline with increasing distance from the local area. In addition, each surface indicated a strong preference for the west coast here called an ‘Eden’ effect. A ridge of high desirability generally joined …

The purpose of this study is to examine the logging industry found along, the upper Cumberland River from the 1870s to the 1930s. Because the industry was very much a part of the economic lifeblood of the people of the region, the study will focus upon the loggers and raftsmen who worked with the timber. Any attempt to describe the lumber business alone would be futile due to the nature of the industry. During the 1960’s the snowmobile was adapted to be used as a recreational vehicle. The resulting use of this recreational machine put demands upon a valuable resource, recreational land, such that land-use conflicts have occurred. It is the assumption of this study that the snowmobile will continue to be utilized as a recreational machine. Therefore the study assumed that eventually, it would be necessary to plan and provide designed, safe snowmobile sites and facilities for recreational use, particularly in Southern Ontario where demand is greatest.
