Perception Of Shopping Centers: An Empirical Study, Cathy Jean Burns

Previous research has indicated that shopping center images consist of various components and that different images are held by consumers, retailers, and mall management. The study examines the consumers’, retailers’s, and mall managements’ images of two shopping centers in the City of Waterloo. One center is Conestoga Mall; the other is Westmount Place. Responses were obtained from shoppers, retailers, and management by use of questionnaires and interviews. The data was analyzed using Biomedical Programs (BMD), a frequency count, factor analytic work, and step-wise multiple regression. The educational quality of Erie County and Buffalo, New York, as represented by school district performance was examined and the relationship between school district performance and the social environment was analyzed. Socioeconomic status, social stability and race were all found to be strongly correlated to school district performance. Within Erie County, Buffalo has the poorest school performance levels while Snyder and Williamsville, two high status suburban districts, have the highest school performance levels. The overall spatial pattern of school district performance based on the PEP test results for 1974 reveal a strong correspondence between school district performance and the social …

The purpose of this research has been to document and analyze the pattern of declining segregation academy enrollment in Alabama prior to 1975. Segregation academy enrollment grew steadily until the 1971-1972 school year. Since that time, a decrease in enrollment has occurred. The lack of adequate documentation and analysis pointed to a need for this research. In August, 1975, the 126 public school superintendents in Alabama were asked to provide information concerning segregation academies in their school districts via a mailed questionnaire. Problems associated with planning the future use of estuarine areas stem from:

1. A lack of knowledge on the critical aspects of the system.
2. Inability to predict the future changes which will occur within the system in order to effectively manage the resource base.

These difficulties lie in the fact that changes within the system occur because of both "natural" and "cultural" conditions. The thesis hypothesis and subsequent research is to describe the physical changes that have occurred within the Netarts system, primarily due to man's impact.

American society is a very mobile one, with approximately twenty percent of the populace changing its place of residence every year. It has been estimated that over two-thirds of all moves take place within the city. Geographic studies of intra-urban migration generally treat the relocations as either 1) movement from one areal unit to another, such as inter-census tract flows, or as 2) individual-level, unrelated moves between respective origins and destinations. In reality, however, each change of residence is one part of a much longer sequence of changes.

Since Louis Roy started Ontario’s first newspaper in 1793, the newspaper industry has been growing. Daily and weekly newspapers were born and either survived to the present or died at some later date. Newspapers appeared to have followed the spread of settlement throughout the province, until a saturation level was reached. After this only minor filling in occurred except in the Toronto to Hamilton region where suburban weeklies were started. The threshold population needed to support the birth of a daily or weekly appeared to fall within the 1200-2000 range and 500-1000 range respectively. The growth of newspapers was steady …

Transportation has been considered in the discipline of geography largely within the context of distance and cost constraints, particularly with reference to industrial location decision-making processes. These costs are easily-quantifiable and measurable, and transportation geographers have tended to depend upon distance and tariff costs as the major transportation inputs in locational decision-making processes.

Land-use planning takes into consideration geologic hazards in order to protect both life and property. One type of geologic hazard is mass movement. Mass movement is a collective term for the downslope movement of mass units of debris e.g., bedrock, soil, and subsurface material, resulting from the influence of gravity and involving transporting media such as ice, snow, water, and air. Federal legislation enacted in January 1974 created federal agencies to produce a rail plan process for the Northeast United States and to monitor and evaluate the programs. A a result of the federal enactment, many states are producing rail plans. Wisconsin is presently preparing one such plan which included the elements of freight operations. The State also has produced a Manual for State Railroad Planning. Both documents have included railroad abandonment as topic of discussion. Most of the United States port authorities delineate their hinterland by the use of freight rate schedules used by inland carriers. The hinterland is defined as that region having favorable rates to and from a port. The use of freight rate schedules can be applied to a) individual commodities or to b) all the commodities moving through a port. The freight rate method is built on the "rational man" concept. That is, a situation is assumed where there is "perfect knowledge" and a desire to minimize transportation costs. This assumption does not always coincide with reality.

Despite the existence of different levels of manufacturing in the various regions of Ontario, most previous studies of this phenomenon have concentrated on explanation of its locational pattern in southern Ontario only. In contrast, though, this thesis analyzes regional variation in the growth rate of manufacturing employment in a total provincial framework. Also, its approach differs in that it examines variation in the factors which account for manufacturing employment growth and whether or not these variations are consistent over space (between regions) and through time.

The study examines the residential relocation experiences of a group of homeowners expropriated in 1965 as the result of the realignment of the Welland Canal just outside of Welland, Ontario. It is based on interviews conducted in 1975 with 85 of the approximately 150 affected households. With Brown and Moore’s (1970) location decision model providing the conceptual framework, information was gathered on satisfaction with the expropriated home, the relocation decision process, demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the households, changes in living habits accompanying the expropriation, as well as data on the pre- and post-expropriation locations. The purpose of the study was to explain the temporal variations of the residential distribution of Blacks in Nashville, Tennessee. A stepwise regression model revealed that Black occupancy exhibits positive relationships with substandard units and overcrowded units and an inverse relationship with average monthly rent. While the quality of housing became more equitable in the period of 1950 to 1970, overcrowding increased in severity. During this period of Black population augmentation, residential expansion took place. The fresh-water mussel industry of the Tennessee River is nearing an end. Overharvesting, habitat alterations, and pollution are the major contributors to the depletion of the mussel resource, upon which the shell industry is based. A history of unconcern by shell harvesters and weak conservation enforcement by governmental agencies, has left the major waterways of the United States nearly void of commercial clams. The purpose of the study was to determine the degree and intensity of the factors affecting the spatial distribution of substandard housing in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A stepwise regression model revealed that straightline distance from the CBD, overcrowded units, average number of rooms per dwelling unit, renter occupancy and non-white occupancy accounted for only 37 percent of total explained variation. A filtering process based on blocks exceeding ten percent Black population was utilized to divide the universe. New analyses on Black and White sectors within the city did not increase the coefficient of determination. They did, however, reveal a great …

This study is concerned with the countryside facet of the non-resident ownership phenomenon. The utilization of spatio-temporal analysis in the research answered some of the questions that have arisen concerning the extent and trends associated with the non-resident ownership process.

Rather than employ one of the many diverse governmental definitions based on political ethnocentrism, this study made use of a three-part non-resident ownership definition based more on distance and the characteristics of the Burce County agricultural subsystem. When attempting to explain the economics of occupational structure, income servies as the apex of discrimination. Women earn only 60% of what men earn. This statistic does not offend enough people since efforts to change the situation have provided only further resistance by women and men for improvement in the earnings split. Women tend to receive lower wage and salary earnings than men because of differences in types of jobs held, job training and continuity of work experience. Hypothesis 1. Land values and distance from the central business district are inversely related.

This hypothesis proved to be true for the city of Bowling Green. Although there was no pronounced peak of land values as found in many of the larger cities, there was found in the central business district the highest land values in the city. This particular theory is applicable to Bowling Green and probably other cities of the same size.
