Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Features of 351 cemeteries in south central Minnesota are described as pervasive, visible points of the cultural landscape. The preferred hilltop location and regular layout and design reflect values and attitudes of early settlers, whose history can be traced through analysis of tombstones. Alternative uses of cemetery land are considered hypothetically, although no changes in land use are anticipated.

A Statistical & Cartographic Analysis Of The Size-Distribution Of Retail Grocery Stores In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Luke Hall

The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution of retail grocery stores in Bowling Green, Kentucky using the formal element of store size as a controlling theme. This purpose was behaviorally accomplished through a cartographic analysis of the city wide arrangement and a statistical analysis measuring the degree and intensity of selected variables. A survey of pertinent literature was undertaken to discover locational trends and to uncover sixteen specific variables suggested to provide association with grocery store distribution. One general and six specific hypotheses were presented! all were rejected. The cartographic displays did, however, yield promising similarities …

The purpose of this study is to examine the logging industry found along, the upper Cumberland River from the 1870s to the 1930s. Because the industry was very much a part of the economic lifeblood of the people of the region, the study will focus upon the loggers and raftsmen who worked with the timber. Any attempt to describe the lumber business alone would be futile due to the nature of the industry. A Finnish riihi in Minnesota is described and analyzed from the perspectives of form and function. The riihi or the combination grain drying, threshing, and winnowing barn, is one of the several folk architectural forms that immigrants from rural Finland built and used in settling sections of Minnesota. Since most of the log structures erected by the Finns are in a state of decay or already have vanished, it seems pertinent to preserve examples of the transplanted folk heritage in writing, and hopefully, in material form as well.

A Journal compiled by Duane A. Stober for a 1969 Wofford College Interim project. The project was a canoe trip on several South Carolina rivers from Pacolet to Charleston. The project studied the biology, history, and geology of the river system in addition to canoeing on the rivers. The tour took place between January 9 and 21, 1969.

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. The intent is to investigate and compare the historical origin, reasons for settlement, early development, growth patterns, industry, lines of transportation, and elements of similarity and difference between the towns.

The main purpose of the thesis will be to examine chronologically any and all events and factors concerned with the navigation of the river during that period of time.
