Campus As A Living Lab: Community Centered Environmental Service Learning, Jennifer Braswell Alford
Campus As A Living Lab: Community Centered Environmental Service Learning, Jennifer Braswell Alford
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
During the Fall Quarter of 2018, California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) students (GEOG 390) partnered with the Inland Empire Resources Conservation District (IERCD) to assists the CSUSB Housing and Residence Life program to develop educational programs aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and water resource management. The purpose of this initiative was for students to learn how collaborative partnerships and shared expertise and resources can assist with educating the public through environmental stewardship and service based learning activities that collectively aim to reduce human impacts to Earth systems and related resources. This is an important component of supporting campus and …
Ascetical Practice And Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability: Tools For Teaching Sustainable Living, James Leighter, John O'Keefe
Ascetical Practice And Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability: Tools For Teaching Sustainable Living, James Leighter, John O'Keefe
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Inspired by Laudato Sí, we outline an application of the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability to our course, Sustainable Practice: The Examined Life. We describe the development of the course in the context a new undergraduate program in the College of Arts and Sciences at Creighton University. In the course, we draw from the notion of ascetical practice, an approach for students as they strive for incorporating more sustainable practices into their daily living. We concentrate on four domains of asceticism: attention, sustenance, materials, and energy. Additionally, we argue that mindfulness through meditation is a necessary activity for students pursuing …
Spotsylvania Solar: A Stakeholder Analysis Of Corporate Involvement, Merissa Shebell
Spotsylvania Solar: A Stakeholder Analysis Of Corporate Involvement, Merissa Shebell
Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects
This report investigates the major corporations that hold a stake in sPower’s 500-Megawatt Spotsylvania Solar Project through the framework of corporate social responsibility. The major corporations include the investors in the project, Microsoft, Apple in collaboration with Akamai, Etsy, and Swiss Re, and the University of Richmond, as well as the energy provides and distributors, Dominion Energy and PJM Interconnection. Through an evaluation of the investors’ sustainability and environmental reports, the motivations behind their agreements with sPower can be attributed to a desire to meet their renewable energy goals. By purchasing a portion of the electricity generated by the solar …
In The Name Of Profit: Canada’S Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve As Economic Development And Colonial Placemaking, Richard M. Hutchings, Marina La Salle
In The Name Of Profit: Canada’S Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve As Economic Development And Colonial Placemaking, Richard M. Hutchings, Marina La Salle
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
Taking a critical heritage approach to late modern naming and placemaking, we discuss how the power to name reflects the power to control people, their land, their past, and ultimately their future. Our case study is the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve (MABR), a recently invented place on Vancouver Island, located in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Through analysis of representations and landscape, we explore MABR as state-sanctioned branding, where a dehumanized nature is packaged for and marketed to wealthy ecotourists. Greenwashed by a feel-good “sustainability” discourse, MABR constitutes colonial placemaking and economic development, representing no break with past practices.
Sustainable Messaging In Film: A Survey Of A College Community, Chelsea Faught
Sustainable Messaging In Film: A Survey Of A College Community, Chelsea Faught
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The concept of sustainability encompasses environmental, social, and economic issues. A sustainable approach encourages a balanced earth in both well-being and resource conservation for the sake of future generations. Unfortunately, awareness of and participation in various dimension of sustainability are currently inadequate given the current projections of the negative impact of climate change to humanity. Therefore, this project was designed to research if there was a relationship between viewing sustainably themed films and becoming more sustainably-conscious as a way to explore a potential avenue for mental and behavioral change. Furthermore, this project examines audience perception of sustainable messaging and content …
Sustainability On Campus, Jennifer Thomson
Sustainability On Campus, Jennifer Thomson
Bucknell: Occupied
Jennifer Thomson, assistant professor of History at Bucknell University, interviews three Bucknell student activists. The group discussed a recent campus sustainability forum, and expanded on various sustainability-related topics. Issues included food waste and insecurity, divestment [fossil-fuel], and economic sustainability versus environmental sustainability. The students also discussed campus culture and the challenges with and opportunities for engaging with the campus community and encouraging sustainable actions.
Unsustainable Sustainability: Do Policies That Increase Environmental Quality Exacerbate Income Inequality?, Haley K. Skinner
Unsustainable Sustainability: Do Policies That Increase Environmental Quality Exacerbate Income Inequality?, Haley K. Skinner
Gettysburg Economic Review
International pressure to meet climate and sustainability goals are mounting. Countries attempting to industrialize in the age of sustainability are tasked with industrializing using low-carbon practices. The transition to a “green” economy requires elimination of some jobs and skillsets that may upset social equality. This paper empirically examines the hypothesis that policies aimed at increased environmental performance promote increased income inequality in developing countries. Because existing literature firmly supports the hypothesis that lower income inequality leads to higher environmental performance, this paper develops a simultaneous equations model (SEM) to estimate the hypothesized endogenous relationship using two stage least squares (2SLS) …

Measuring Sustainability (Geog 100 Intro To Human Geography), Michal Kohout
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Sustainability is a complex measure of the correlation between economic, social and environmental factors. Using students' campus experiences as well as those from their communities we construct measures of sustainability, and create a sustainability index.

Sustainability Literacy In French Literature And Film: From Solitary Reveries To Treks Across Deserts, Annette Sampon-Nicolas
French Faculty Scholarship
This essay explores the imperative to embrace a new model of education that will engage students in learning about the interconnectedness of our multi species world, sustainability, and global solidarity -- the belief "that unity of humankind can be established on the basis of some basic or core human values" (Korab-Karpowicz 305). Foreign language courses -- in particular advanced-level offerings that address literacy, critical thinking, and cultural comparisons -- are ideal settings for educating for sustainability literacy. Such literacy is essential to our collective twenty-first-century global identity, but it requires transformative educational practices. As we design foreign language courses, we …
