South-South Relations And The English School Of International Relations: Chinese And Brazilian Ideas And Involvement In Sub-Saharan Africa, Joseph Marques, Anthony Spanakos
Department of Political Science and Law Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The rise of large developing countries has led to considerable discussions of re-balancing global relations and giving greater priority to understanding South-South relations. This paper, in exploring the central ideas of Chinese and Brazilian foreign policy and the behavior of these two rising Southern countries toward Sub-Saharan Africa, argues that the English School of International Relations is well suited to understanding the intentions and actions that characterize South-South relations.

Link Levy To Services- Not Urban Middle Class Assets, Tom Dunne
Link Levy To Services- Not Urban Middle Class Assets, Tom Dunne

Paying any tax is an unwelcome burden, but in Ireland many have a particular aversion to taxes on their homes. We are not alone in this. Elsewhere, taxes on homes are also unpopular; witness the People's Initiative to Limit Property Taxation which forced the California state government to cut property taxes. Nevertheless, residential property taxes remain an almost universal feature of developed countries because of compelling economic arguments for them. Also, local property taxes are regarded as the best means of funding local government.
Rarely, it seems to me, is there such a distance between what the public wants and …
Women's Mobilization In Latin America: A Case Study Of Venezuela, Brianna Russell
Women's Mobilization In Latin America: A Case Study Of Venezuela, Brianna Russell
Master's Theses
Abstract
I examine the following elements in regards to women’s mobilization in Latin America and Venezuela from the late 1950s to the present: (a) the influence of the state and economy on times when women mobilized (b) class division within the movement (c) women’s demands during different time periods (d) the ways in which women were successful in working towards gender equality. This thesis reviews the literature on women’s mobilization in Latin America during the second half of the twentieth century. I find that women mobilized across class lines with the masses to end dictatorships. Women demobilized during transitions to …
The Effects Of Political Institutions On Public Budgeting, Andrew Burnos
The Effects Of Political Institutions On Public Budgeting, Andrew Burnos
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Economics around the globe has been a growing issue of late due to the current economic crisis. This study focuses on political institutional factors that influence spending in a particular country. The variables used in this study include Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Tax Revenue as Percent of GDP, and current account balance to name a few. This research looks at the relationship between proportional representation compared to majoritarian systems as well as presidential compared to parliamentary systems and how these relate to public budgeting. The Structural Injustice Of Forced Migration And The Failings Of Normative Theory, David Ingram
The Structural Injustice Of Forced Migration And The Failings Of Normative Theory, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
I propose to criticize two strands of argument - contractarian and utilitarian – that liberals have put forth in defense of economic coercion, based on the notion of justifiable paternalism. To illustrate my argument, I appeal to the example of forced labor migration, driven by the exigencies of market forces. In particular, I argue that the forced migration of a special subset of unemployed workers lacking other means of subsistence (economic refugees) cannot be redeemed paternalistically as freedom or welfare enhancing in the long run. I further argue that contractarian and utilitarian approaches are normatively incapable of appreciating this fact …
A Philosophical Framework For Conditional Cash Transfers, Jaron Abelsohn
A Philosophical Framework For Conditional Cash Transfers, Jaron Abelsohn
CMC Senior Theses
Despite some recent economic progress, there is still widespread poverty and severe inequality in developing countries. According to the World Bank there are over 925 million hungry or undernourished people worldwide. More than 80 percent of people in the world live in countries whose income inequality is rising. Over 2.1 billion people globally live on less than two dollars a day, with over 880 million people facing absolute poverty and living on less than one dollar a day. Three out of four people living on less than $1 a day live in rural areas. These impacts have been magnified by …

Land Values As A Source Of Local Government Finance, Tom Dunne
Land Values As A Source Of Local Government Finance, Tom Dunne
Books/Book Chapters
Funding local government has been a permanent feature of debates about public policy in Ireland and Many feel that the balance of power between local and central government is weighted too much in
This paper suggests that the concept of economic rent, on which the justification for property taxes rests and its relevance to the property market in a modern, economically successful and urbanised Ireland, needs to be vented, discussed and debated.
The proposition is that if a greater understanding was created about the economic characteristics of landed property both value capture and local property taxes would achieve greater public …

"Borochov foresaw the struggle of oppressed peoples as a necessary and lasting factor in the formation of a new social order.
The economy of the Jewish nation is that of a nation in exile. Jews are centered around secondary occupations; they are excluded from the primary level of production: agriculture, mining, heavy industry. They work more often as merchants, in services, and as workers in the secondary industries (food, clothes, etc.) They desire to penetrate the higher classes. As individuals they may succeed in doing so but as a nation they cannot succeed. The assimilation of the Jews is not …
