Part I of this Article provides an overview of research analysts and their basic functions, including a discussion of sell-side analysts' role in the market's recent boom and bust. Part II examines the conflicts of interest that have plagued sell-side research, and Part III reviews the Regulatory Actions that are meant to address these conflicts. In Part IV, the author will make the case for encouraging, rather than lessening, investor skepticism in sell-side research and will explain why the Regulatory Actions are not likely to improve the performance of sell-side analysts. The New Basel Capital Accord: Making It Effective With Stronger Market Discipline, Harald Benink, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

In January 2001 the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision proposed a new capital adequacy framework to respond to deficiencies in the 1988 Capital Accord on credit risk. The main elements or ‘pillars’ of the proposal are capital requirements based on the internal risk-ratings of individual banks, expanded and active supervision, and information disclosure requirements to enhance market discipline. We discuss the incentive effects of the proposed regulation. In particular, we argue that it provides incentives for banks to develop new ways to evade the intended consequences of the proposed regulation. Supervision alone cannot prevent banks from ‘gaming and manipulation’ of …

Market Structure And Racial Earnings: Evidence From Job Changers, Richard U. Agesa, Jacqueline Agesa, Gary A. Hoover Jan 2001

Market Structure And Racial Earnings: Evidence From Job Changers, Richard U. Agesa, Jacqueline Agesa, Gary A. Hoover

Economics Faculty Research

In his seminal contribution, Gary Becker (1957) suggests that rents in noncompetitive industries provide employers with the latitude to engage in earnings discrimination. Implicit in this theory, is that white workers in noncompetitive industries would capture a disproportion ate share of monopoly rents (excessive wages) relative to their minority counterparts. We utilize wage-change equations to examine earnings shifts for whites and minorities stemming from a job switch to a different market structure. Additionally for each racial group, wage equations of workers before and after the job change are used to calculate difference in-differences estimates of wage change as a result …

A Methodology For Project Selection Using Economic Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process, Jeffrey L. Battin, Thomas J. Bender

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the applicability of a multiple criterion decision making method, known as the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) , to economic analysis decisions involving project selection. Through a survey of the literature and current practices, it was determined that qualitative criteria were not adequately represented in a typical economic analysis of projects. Several MCDM methods were examined and the AHP was found to be the most promising technique to rate projects on a ratio scale. Two types of project selection problems, those involving nonmutually exclusive alternatives and those involving mutually exclusive alternatives, were examined. It was determined that the …

CBN Annual Report

The Central Bank of Nigeria business survey showed increased manufacturing sales and inventories of finished goods. Inflation decelerated to its lowest level since 1973, mainly due to reduced monetary expansion and increased production of staple food, livestock products, and fish. The money supply rose by 5.6% in 1980 and 3.1% in 1982, but the government sector's share in bank credit increased. The Gross National Product of all industrialized …

The Household Budget, Inez Pepin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics in 1931, examines the household budget as a system for managing family income during a period of national economic crisis. Pepin opens by surveying contemporary economic theories offered to explain the ongoing depression, including overproduction, unequal distribution, and capitalization theories, before turning to the household as a unit affected by broader economic conditions.

The thesis defines the budget as one stage within a larger financial organization process encompassing planning, record-keeping, and periodic review, and argues that no fixed formula for …
