School Resources And Student Outcomes: Evidence From The State Of Illinois, Alyssa Cooper

Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development—Student Research

Literature on the subject of school resources and student outcomes tends to find that there is a positive relationship between both variables. Most literature uses per-pupil spending (PPS) or teacher salaries as a measure of school resources. While I have modeled both in my paper, my focus in this paper is on per-pupil spending. Using data from the Illinois State Board of Education from 2006-2016 and measuring student outcomes through average ACT scores, operational PPS is found to be insignificant, whereas instructional PPS is found to be positive and significant at the 5% level. Estimates suggest that a 1 standard …

The Impact Of Ride-Hailing Services On Public Transportation Use: A Discontinuity Regression Analysis, Nicole Sadowsky, Erik Nelson

Economics Department Working Paper Series

Since 2011, the private ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft have expanded into more and more US cities. We use regression discontinuity design to examine the impact of Uber and Lyft’s entry on public transportation use in the US’ largest urban areas. In most cases, entry into cities by the two ride-hailing companies was staggered: Uber entered first followed some months later by Lyft. We find that public transportation use increased in an urban area, all else equal, immediately following the first entry. However, we find that the spike in public transportation use after first entry disappeared following the entry of …

Bureaucracy by approving authorities in practice in communities where land is situated still hinders land acquisition for agricultural investment. This study therefore analyzes land policy, governance and accountability and draw out some implications on food production in Nigeria. The percentage of arable land to the total land area was …

Evaluation Of Monetary, Fiscal And External Inflationary Sources In Nigeria, Samson A. Aladejare

Journal for the Advancement of Developing Economies

This study focuses on evaluating the monetary, fiscal and external inflationary sources in Nigeria. The Auto-Regressive Distributive Lag estimation technique was adapted to capture these effects. Empirical findings of the study showed that overall, the main determining cause of inflation in both short run and long run periods in Nigeria, are more of monetary and external factors and less of fiscal sources. Specifically, the problem of inflation in Nigeria appears to be more of structural phenomenon than monetary in the short run. However, in the long run, combinations of monetary and external factors tend to be the major cause of …
