A state of uncertainty, almost at the verge of panic, prevails today in Pakistan. Prophets of gloom and doom using social and electronic media are spreading all kinds of fake, negative, partial and partisan stories and numbers. Predictions of default, bankruptcy and similarity with Sri Lanka are jarring the equity, debt and currency markets and pushing the credit default rates on Pakistani bonds in international markets to unprecedented elevated yields, making it difficult to tap these markets. However, one should present the facts and data unvarnished and untarnished. Yes, we are facing a large current account deficit that is putting …

The Spatial Associations Between Crime And Economy In Chicago 2015-2020, Hongtao Huang

Honors Capstones

The severity of the crime is often the most intuitive reflection of whether a region is safe and the top factor for the public when evaluating a region. Economist's list of the safest cities in seven major North American cities, Chicago was ranked at six, just above Dallas. Chicago scored the lowest in personal security, which is closely tied to the crime. Against the backdrop of higher unemployment and prices, this study is interested in how property-based crimes are related to the economic decline in Chicago geographically. The study used the heterogeneity analysis tool Geodetector to investigate the correlation between …

The Political Pandemic: The Relationship Between Political Leanings, Covid-19, And The Economy In 2020, Garrett Clark

Honors College Theses

The effect of political leanings on the pandemic outcomes, both in terms of the COVID-19 cases and death totals and the extent that the pandemic affected the economy, is the analysis of interest. The literature indicates a relationship between political leanings and the COVID-19 response. Data is gathered from a variety of sources, and a series of regressions are performed to analyze several control variables and determine their significance. The results indicate a relationship between political leanings and COVID-19 outcomes. However, results regarding the effects of politics on the economy are less clear. Possible explanations are provided for the results.

Global trade in services has grown more than 60 percent faster that of goods trade over the past decade and given its relatively higher rate of growth it is conceivable that services trade may catch up or even surpass global goods trade in the next decade or so. We have to discard the old notion that it is only industrialization and goods exports that would lead us to the path of economic wellbeing and strive hard to promote services trade led by digital technology. Services create almost one-third to one-half of the value that goes into traded manufactured goods in …

The new coalition government has assumed power at a time of deep external and internal economic difficulties in the midst of a highly-polarized polity and society. The immediate temptation would be to distance itself from what the previous government had done and formulate a brand new package of initiatives. Unfortunately, this tradition is to be broken as it has always proved counterproductive and instead of remedying, it only aggravates the economic situation. In such uncertain times, sensible policy decisions need to be taken immediately to reassure the international financial community (institutions, credit rating agencies, bond markets and foreign investors), trading …

East Asia’S Inclusive Growth Model : Part – Iv, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The seventh lesson from East Asia is the emphasis on science and technology as an essential ingredient for economic progress. Considerable attention was paid to science and technology and higher education and research both in the private and public sectors as well as academia. Korea and Taiwan (a non-Asean country) sent teams to recruit their nationals working in the US, and offered them lucrative and attractive packages to hire them back to their countries of origin. These scientists and engineers taught at the local universities and colleges, set up research institutes, worked in the laboratories and on product development of …

The fourth lesson is the reliance on the private sector. In these economies, the private sector was allowed a free hand in the production, distribution and trade of goods and services. Japan had shown the way through big industrial conglomerates Keiretsus/Zaibatsus as did Korea through Chaebols. Taiwan adopted a different strategy – to promote industrialisation through smalland-medium enterprises. China, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia encouraged foreign direct investment and joint ventures. In China, the share of state owned enterprises in the economy has fallen to 30-40 percent from 100 percent. Most of the town and village enterprises owned by the …

In 1980, China was among the world’s poorest countries with 80 percent of the population having incomes less than $1 per day and only a third of all adults able to read or write. Its per capita income was identical to that of India. By the year 2000, the proportion of the poor (income less than $1 per day) had declined to around 16 percent. Between 2008 and 2018, China ‘s GDP rose four-fold from $4.6 trillion to $18 trillion making it the second largest economy in the world (in nominal dollar terms) and today its per capita of 10,000 …

East Asia’S Inclusive Growth Model : Part – I, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Almost thirty years ago the World Bank produced a seminal report, ‘The East Asia Miracle’, which captured the essence of the success stories of eight economies in East Asia (Japan; the four tigers – Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan; and three Asean countries – Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand). These high-performing economies grew three times as fast as Latin America and South Asia and five times faster than Sub Saharan Africa between 1965 and 1990. During the 1990s, the high growth momentum was sustained, and these economies grew at average 8 percent per annum. Their share in world trade expanded at …

Green, Clean, And Mean? China’S Foreign Direct Investment In Sub-Saharan Africa Economy, Makuochukwu Okoma

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation is an investigative study that utilized the Panel Vector Autoregressive (PVAR) model that examines the impact of China’s Foreign Direct Investment on the environment and economy of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In evaluating this impact, 43 SSA countries were analyzed and subdivided into various income levels; three arguments were proposed and tested.First is China’s FDI in SSA, “green.” Does China’s FDI lead to sustainable growth and development for the environment in SSA.? Second, does China’s FDI clean up pollution through the reduction of Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions? Lastly, does it lead to economic growth and development in SSA? The …

Food Security, Economic Growth And Price Stability Nexus And Conceptual Issues, Park O. Idisi Dec 2021

Food Security, Economic Growth And Price Stability Nexus And Conceptual Issues, Park O. Idisi

Economic and Financial Review

A strong argument that encourages analysing food security and food price stability issues is importance to economic well-being. Nigeria is one of the most food insecure countries and highly affected by all three drivers. For one, the country is vulnerable to price instability and successively hit by environmental disasters, that impact people’s livelihoods. Furthermore, its economy is thriving, but around 48.0 per cent of its population lives below the poverty line (World Bank, 2020; World Poverty Clock, 2020). In addition to that, since 2009 northeastern Nigeria is struck by insurgency. Essentially, sustainability in economic growth is dependent on achievement of …

Economic and Financial Review

The theme for this year’s edition, “Food Security in Nigeria: Options for Policy” is apt and in tune with the existing realities of both the global and domestic economies, which have suffered heavily from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the theme could not have come at a better time than now when issues of insecurity, climate change, and COVID-19 related disruptions are challenging food production and supply, not only in Nigeria but also globally. As a matter of fact, food security is critical for national security, economic stability and sustainable development.

Special Remarks, Kingsley Obiora

Economic and Financial Review

The theme of this year’s Seminar, Food Security in Nigeria: Options for Policy, is apt, timely and consistent with the current efforts of this administration and the Bank in finding sustainable solutions to the food security challenges confronting us as a nation. As we all know, food is a basic need of every man and key to socio-economic stability. The ability of a country to feed its people, and perhaps extend the surplus to other countries, is one of the key indicators of good standing in the comity of nations. The World Food Summit (1996), defined food security as a …

The Banality Of Corporate Evil, Amina Dessouki

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis critiques the notion of corporate social responsibility (CSR) through tracing the multiple dynamics between a multinational corporation and a development consultancy working on a recycling project in collaboration with the Zabaleen in Mansheyet Nasser, Egypt. The thesis looks at the ways in which actors negotiate their different positions, the harmonies and discordances that unfold through various agendas coming together, the silences produced, and the ways in which structural violence is intensified under the guise of development. The thesis contrasts the detached efforts of corporate workers and development consultants with the lives of the zabaleen, who live in a …

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing

From 1948 onwards, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees settled in Lebanon, in both United Nations camps and private accommodation. Until today, various peace initiatives have taken place to solve this humanitarian crisis, to no avail. The Palestinians in Sidon have integrated into Lebanese society, become intertwined into the community, as both entrepreneurs and employees. Considering the "right of return" for Palestinian refugees, the consequences of the repatriation of the refugees needs to be considered. In this context, this research aims to understand the perceptions of the residents of Sidon on what they believe will happen to the economy of …

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

Turkish economy has experienced a policy shift from import-substitution to a widespread outward-oriented policy regime in 1980s. In this transition period, industrial sector has stood out as the leading in export-led growth policy. Trade openness coupled with export promotion strategies has reshaped business environment in Turkey and created new opportunities for local investors as well. Hence, this process had also considerable impacts in spatial distribution of industrial activities across Turkish regions. In this environment, some Turkish provinces have flourished a salient economic performance since 1980s that led them to be called by a colloquial term Anatolian Tigers, by associating their …

The collapse of the gold-based monetary system in the early 1970s and the increase in oil prices due to the Arab-Israeli War designated the beginning of a new era. With the collapse of the monetary system, the rapid volatility of money values and interest rates increased the uncertainty and encouraged investors to buy commodities, especially gold, in order to protect themselves. The oil war caused commodity prices to increase more. Cost-driven inflation and recession, which means stagflation, left its mark on the era. Keynesian policies, which were seen as responsible for the case of stagflation, had been replaced by the …

Title : The impact of Foreign capital on the Moroccan economy

The Protection Treaty was a legal pretext for France to supervise Morocco. However, the reality of protection culminated in exclusive control and domination of the economic sector. Businessmen and settlers benefited largely from the wealth of the region without restrictions. Moroccans who were involved with the imperialist economic logic seized the opportunity regardless of the economic logic dictated by Islam. Thus, the socio-economic, political and cultural repercussions of French economic policy on the Moroccan economy were huge. The colonial order dismantled traditional economic patterns that existed long before, therefore, …
