We study infinite-horizon monetary economies characterized by trading frictions that originate from random pairwise meetings, and commitment and enforcement limitations. We prove that introducing occasional trade in 'centralized markets' opens the door to an informal enforcement scheme that sustains a non-monetary efficient allocation. All is required is that trading partners be patient and their actions be observable. We then present a matching environment in which trade may occur in large markets and yet agents' trading paths cross at most once. Malaysia In The Global Economy: Crisis, Recovery, And The Road Ahead, Daniel E. Charette

This article offers an analysis of contemporary economic development in Malaysia, focusing especially on the causes and consequences of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Malaysia offers an excellent case study in international development due to its role as an export-dependent developing country with a high degree of integration in the global economy. In attempting to determine why Malaysia was enveloped by a financial crisis in July of 1997, a two-level political economy approach is used to separate international policy influences from domestic influences. Software And Internet Industry Workers: Implications For The Future Of Work In Massachusetts, Sarah Kuhn, Paula Raymann

New England Journal of Public Policy

Those at the leading edge of the new economy — workers in software and Internet workplaces — can tell us something about the future of work in our new world. The authors have conducted a National Science Foundation-funded study of women and men working in IT. They find that while pay and the opportunity to do interesting work are major attractions, challenges facing this workforce include stress, difficulties balancing work and family, and concerns about employment security. While women and men reported similar attitudes and experiences in many areas, in others there were still significant differences.

As part of UMass Boston’s recent celebration to mark the inauguration of Chancellor Michael F. Collins, M.D., the Division of Corporate, Continuing and Distance Education (CCDE) hosted a “virtual symposium” featuring Robert B. Reich. Between April 24 and May 8, CCDE posted a streaming video and a downloadable audio file of a presentation that Professor Reich had delivered on April 11, 2006 at the national conference of the University Continuing Education Association. This talk was supplemented, on May 3, by a live teleconferencing Q&A session with Professor Reich and about fifty UMass Boston graduate students.

The recent decision taken by the Government of Pakistan to establish a National Commission for Government Reform (NCGR) has evoked a varied set of reactions and also heightened expectations about the outcome of these reforms in some quarters.

The purpose of this article is to explain the rationale, lay down the scope of work and to apprise the general public as to ways in which they can contribute to the task of the Commission.

This study aims to understand the process of foreign policy change that occurred m Mozambique during the mid 80s. Most of the few studies of foreign policy devoted to developing countries have based their explanation of developing countries foreign policy on static analysis and the primacy of the psychological approach. However, the case of Mozambique suggests us that decision for foreign policy change was conditioned by a combination of domestic and external factors. This paper analyses the causes behind the Japanese economic downturn which started in the 1990s and investigates the failure of both fiscal and monetary policy to remedy the recession. The author asserts that the Japanese economy was due for recession when two factors occurred to precipitate it, the asset price bubble and the banking crisis. However, a recession would have occurred even if these events had not transpired, because of a number of structural factors. The recession was then prolonged by the existence of the "liquidity trap". The mission of the World Bank is to aid developing countries stabilize their economies through financial and technical assistance. The five dominant themes that emerge in a review of the World Bank literature are: health, gender, environment, globalization, and global governance. Each of these themes is broadly related to issues that consistently influence the larger issue of how the World Bank incorporates, rejects, or impacts human rights.
