Presidential Popularity And Macroeconomic Performance: Are Voters Really So Naive?, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Presidential Popularity And Macroeconomic Performance: Are Voters Really So Naive?, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Faculty Publications
The article focuses on the relationships between the macroeconomic performance of political administration and their popularity or vote getting ability. All of the studies that has been performed to analyze the relationships agree that votes and popularity can be explained well by models which suppose that voters judge policy makers on the basis of retrospective evaluation of past macroeconomic outcomes. While conventional popularity functions assume that voters simply punish inflation and reward output or low unemployment, voters who understand the long and short run relationships noted above would evaluate policymakers differently. Inflation in a given period is largely determined by …

Another Look At Growth And Defense In Less Developed Countries, David Lim
Another Look At Growth And Defense In Less Developed Countries, David Lim
Support & Other Units (THEi)
Using an estimating equation that was devised systematically within an explicit conceptual framework, it shows that defence spending was detrimental to economic growth. Finds regional differences in that the adverse effects were marked in Africa and the Western hemisphere, but absent in Asia, the Middle East, and Southern Europe.
Campaign Contributions And Congressional Voting: A Simultaneous Probit-Tobit Model, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Campaign Contributions And Congressional Voting: A Simultaneous Probit-Tobit Model, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Faculty Publications
Full-information maximum likelihood (FIML) estimates of the simultaneous probit-Tobit (SPT) model suggest that effects of campaign contributions on voting are smaller than single equation probit estimates would indicate. The author has generally unable to conclude that contributions have a significant impact on voting decisions, apparently votes are most often decided on the basis of personal ideology or preferences of constituents. These findings differ markedly from earlier results of economists Gary C. Durden and Jonathan J. Silberman, whose single equation models showed a substantial impact of contributions on voting decisions. Despite the lack of significance according to model SPT, it would …
Malaysian Development Planning, David Lim
Malaysian Development Planning, David Lim
Support & Other Units (THEi)
Development planning has been described as "a deliberate governmental attempt to coordinate economic decision-making over the long-run and to influence, direct and, in some cases, even control the level and growth of a nation's principal economic variables (income, comsumption, employment, investment, saving, exports, imports, etc.) in order to achieve a pre-determined set of development objectives." One set of reasons for planning centres round the operation of the market system. Thus, market prices are often distorted and can result in a misallocation of scarce resources. Another set revolves round the need to have a rallying point for local and foreign interests …
Sample Selection Bias And The Nature Of Unemployment, Joshua David Angrist
Sample Selection Bias And The Nature Of Unemployment, Joshua David Angrist
Honors Papers
The most disturbing and difficult empirical problems of labor economics revolve around the absence of crucial information; the wage an unemployed person would receive if he or she were working. The most controversial policy problem of labor economics is embodied in the question; when is unemployment a problem? The goal of this paper is to propose a methodology for studying the first problem that sheds some light on the second.

A Simulation Games Approach To Suppliment The Teaching Of Basic Economics Concepts In Elementary School, David L. Spies
A Simulation Games Approach To Suppliment The Teaching Of Basic Economics Concepts In Elementary School, David L. Spies
All Graduate Projects
A year-long simulation game was created to facilitate the teaching of basic economics in a sixth and seventh grade middle school. The game could be adapted to implementation at lower grade levels. The students built two, table-top cities. They established a money system and were paid for positive behavior and effort. With their earned income and with loans from a bank, they purchased land, built homes, invested in business franchises, engaged in trade, and worked collectively to finance and build government projects and services. Discussion questions and evaluation tests were devloped, based upon the curriculum guidelines established by the Joint …

An Evaluation Of Two Types Of Summer Home Economics Programs Conducted In Box Elder County, Utah, Kathryn Cannon Jensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A follow-up study, involving students, parents, and teachers that participated in two types of summer home economics programs in Box Elder County during the summer of 1979, was conducted during August, 1979 to collect data relative to the following objectives: (1) to obtain demographic data as to age, sex, and participation in the program; (2) to obtain the subjects feelings about the program; and (3) to gather opinions and suggestions from the respondents about the programs.
Analysis of the data revealed (1) there were more students enrolled in the In-School program than the Home-Visit program. There were more females than …

The Economics Of Fertility In Utah, Carl E. Enomoto
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purposes of this thesis are to determine the economic forces influencing birth rates in Utah and to compare their influences with those found in similar studies for the United States. To do this, an economic model describing fertility behavior was used. Data for the model was collected primarily from Census Bureau reports for the year 1970.

New Perspectives On The Materials Interface With The Three E'S -- Energy, Environment And Economics, Donald S. Remer
New Perspectives On The Materials Interface With The Three E'S -- Energy, Environment And Economics, Donald S. Remer
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
New perspectives are presented on the material interface with the three E's -- Energy, Environment, and Economics. The past, present, and future energy picture is described from 1850 through the year 2030. The major energy sources such as oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear, and several new emerging energy options are compared and contrasted. The lead time, capital, and materials required for bringing on-stream new energy sources is described. Previous U.S. energy forecasts are reviewed and are found to be too optimistic. The U.S. materials situation is outlined with an emphasis on per capita materials use and the critical role that …

Actual, Desired And Full Levels Of Capital Utilisation In Malaysian Manufacturing, David Lim
Actual, Desired And Full Levels Of Capital Utilisation In Malaysian Manufacturing, David Lim
Support & Other Units (THEi)
This paper shows that capital utilisation in West Malaysian manufacturing, though higher than that in other less developed countries, still leaves capital plant idle for a considerable proportion of the total available time. These findings, based on a modified McGraw‐Hill measure and on the Winston time‐measure of capital utilisation, therefore calls into question the wisdom of an industrial investment incentive programme which aims primarily at maximising the volume of capital expenditure, and which pays no attention at all to the level of utilisation of the existing stock of capital.

Money, Expectations And The Existence Of A Temporary Equilibrium, Bryce Hool
Money, Expectations And The Existence Of A Temporary Equilibrium, Bryce Hool
Research Collection School Of Economics
The article presents information on money, expectations and the existance of a temporary equilibrium. If money and financial assets are to be integrated into general equilibrium theory, it is apparent that the classical Arrow-Debreu framework must be modified. As long as all trading takes place essentially at some initial point in time, with each individual subject only to a present value budget constraint, there is no place in the system for money, either as a medium of exchange or as a store of value, even if uncertainty about future states of the world is introduced as in G. Debreu's work, …

Here Is Where We Are, M. H. Baker
Here Is Where We Are, M. H. Baker
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Industrial chemistry in the Upper Midwest consists principally of compounding, formulating and specialty manufacturing rather than the production of basic chemicals. The economic position of industrial chemistry is, nevertheless, significant because many of the region's major corporations are employers of technically-trained personnel and are substantial chemical users. This paper provides a non-quantitative overview of chemical technology applications and developments in some of the area's key industries as a record of the past, a measure of current activity, and as a possible indicator for the future. The paper also notes that the large investment demands, complexity of regulations and distance from …
On The Measurement Of Capital Utilisation In Less Developed Countries, David Lim
On The Measurement Of Capital Utilisation In Less Developed Countries, David Lim
Support & Other Units (THEi)
The shortage of physical capital is often seen as the crucial constraint to growth in less developed countries (LDCs). Thus many development plans are based on the aggregate Harrod-Domar model where the growth of the economy is seen to depand only on the availability and the productivity of capital. A corollary of such a capital-centred approach to development is that the capital plant and machinery installed are utilized to the full. However, recent studies claim that capital under-utilization exists on a massive scale in manufacturing in LDCs and raise the possibility of a parabox in capital usage in capital-scarce LDCs. …
