Financial Inclusion In Nigeria: Measurements And Lessons, David Olu Ajakaiye, Afolabi Olowookere

Bullion

The operations of financial systems are crucial to people’s savings, credit, payment and risk management needs. More importantly, the inclusiveness of this system tends to benefit the poor and other disadvantaged groups in the society (Demirguckunt and Klapper, 2012). In the definition of the Centre for Financial Inclusion, “Full Financial Inclusion is a state in which all people who can use them have access to a suite of quality financial services, provided at affordable prices, in a convenient manner, and with dignity for the client” (Gardeva and Rynne, 2011). This entails building a financial system that serves as many people …

Mountain Monitor-4th Quarter 2012, Kenan Fikri, Mark Muro Mar 2013

Mountain Monitor-4th Quarter 2012, Kenan Fikri, Mark Muro

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

Indicators of economic recovery depicted continued progress in the major metropolitan areas of the Mountain West in the fourth quarter of 2012. The region’s employment recovery gained momentum, and solid home-price increases in the region contributed to the nation‘s broader housing recovery. Such inroads bode well for further advances in 2013. At the same time, the region’s output recovery slowed and unemployment refused to budge.

The Choice Of Technology And Rural-Urban Migration In Economic Development, Haiwen Zhou Jan 2013

The Choice Of Technology And Rural-Urban Migration In Economic Development, Haiwen Zhou

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper studies a general equilibrium model of rural-urban migration in which manufacturing firms engage in oligopolistic competition and choose increasing returns technologies to maximize profits. Urban residents incur commuting costs to work in the Central Business District. Surprisingly a change in the size of the population or an increase in the exogenously given wage rate will not affect a manufacturing firm’s choice of technology. This helps to explain why firms in developing countries may not adopt labor intensive technologies even under abundant labor supply. An increase in the number of manufacturing firms increases both the employment rate and the …

The Effectiveness Of Public Development Banks: Designing Good Impact Evaluations, Alessandro Maffioli, Cesar M. Rodriguez Jan 2013

The Effectiveness Of Public Development Banks: Designing Good Impact Evaluations, Alessandro Maffioli, Cesar M. Rodriguez

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

PDB programs have become a fundamental ingredient of productive development policy strategies in most emerging economies. Although the overall need for these interventions is rarely questioned, academics and policymakers often debate their effectiveness, as well as the optimal approaches and instruments necessary to implement them. Therefore, the need to produce rigorous evaluations of PDBs has become increasingly relevant for both government and civil society (see Chapter 2).

This chapter presents the main concepts and operational arguments regarding the execution of indepth impact evaluations of PDB initiatives and instruments. For a more practical approach, these arguments are presented with examples of …

American Influence In The International Financial Institutions, Shawn Rosen, Jonathan R. Strand Jan 2013

American Influence In The International Financial Institutions, Shawn Rosen, Jonathan R. Strand

McNair Poster Presentations

As the world becomes more globalized and the prosperity of new, rising powers begins to challenge that of long-standing powers, many scholars and policy-makers have begun to examine America’s place in the global political economy. Ongoing changes in the world political economy such as the flourishing economies in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), continued integration in Europe, as well as questions about economic policies derived from American dominated neoliberal ideology have raised many doubts regarding how long the United States can remain the world leader. The conventional wisdom holds that the United States has enough …

Towards Aid Effectiveness : Contested Theories And Concepts : A Case Study Of Ghana’S Community–Based Rural Development Project, Kwadwo Adusei-Asante Jan 2013

Towards Aid Effectiveness : Contested Theories And Concepts : A Case Study Of Ghana’S Community–Based Rural Development Project, Kwadwo Adusei-Asante

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The discussion of aid effectiveness continues to gain prominence in international development policy discourse and analysis. However, the question of why aid seems to be ineffective is far more complicated and remains largely unanswered. While the notions that aid drives donors’ interests and creates dependency are still relevant, this thesis confronts the problem, by examining the issues that influenced the operationalisation and effectiveness of aid programs in the context of Ghana’s Community-Based Rural Development Project (CBRDP) (2005-2011). By arguing that aid dependency and “aid as a concept” are different, the thesis makes the most basic assumption that ‘aid’ is not …

Mcofuture: Formulas For Success In Montgomery County, Ohio, Zachary Moore, Jack Dustin Dec 2012

Mcofuture: Formulas For Success In Montgomery County, Ohio, Zachary Moore, Jack Dustin

Explorations – The Journal of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity at Wright State

The subject of regionalism and metropolitan government is one that has increasingly been addressed following the latest economic downturn and subsequent cuts in government funding. In today’s globalizing world, metropolitan regions across the United States have sought to not only attract new companies and jobs, but also to retain the companies and jobs they already have. It has become a struggle for some cities to hold on to businesses, whether they are relocating to another region altogether or even to a nearby suburban municipality. When it comes to economic development, competition is fierce between cities and regions. It is now …

Mountain Monitor-3rd Quarter 2012, Mark Muro, Kenan Fikri Dec 2012

Mountain Monitor-3rd Quarter 2012, Mark Muro, Kenan Fikri

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

The major metropolitan areas of the Intermountain West finally put the housing bust behind them in the third quarter of 2012 and in most places made solid progress. House prices rose in all 10 major metropolitan markets in the months from June to September for the first time since the recession began. Likewise, output growth accelerated and the unemployment rate continued to fall. Unfortunately none of this prevented the region’s already feeble jobs recovery from slowing.

Politics Versus Economics, Ishrat Husain Dr. Oct 2012

Politics Versus Economics, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

A question often asked is that when current economic ills have been diagnosed and we know what needs to be done, why doesn’t it happen? The reason is the inherent disjuncture between the political risks a ruling party is willing to take and the economic rewards accruing through prudent economic management that will take care of these economic ills.

This asymmetry between the incurrence of the costs and the appropriation of benefits lies at the heart of the non-reformist stance of democratically elected governments. India – the largest democracy in the world – has recently been faced with a similar …

Mountain Monitor-2nd Quarter 2012, Mark Muro, Kenan Fikri

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

Data for the second quarter of 2012 reveal that the large metropolitan areas of the Mountain region were undergoing some of both the strongest and weakest economic recoveries in the nation—even as the pace of recovery across the region as a whole slackened. The result is a new geography. Crash-blasted Boise and Phoenix, along with Utah’s metropolitan areas, are now recovering relatively strongly while Colorado’s metropolitan areas and Albuquerque, Las Vegas, and Tucson struggle.

Microfinance As An Effective Development Solution: The Case Of Mongolia, Kjersten Adams Jul 2012

Microfinance As An Effective Development Solution: The Case Of Mongolia, Kjersten Adams

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Microfinance is increasingly looked at as a development solution for countries around the world. Its development and practice in former communist countries, however, has been relatively unexplored. This study seeks to fill this gap by asking how the practice and operation of microfinance in Mongolia compare to global best practices. Using global best practice frameworks regarding regulatory and organizational environments for microfinance, data gathered from surveys and onsite training observations at Xacbank is used to assess Mongolia's financial sector and its relative compliance to said practices. The analysis helps address the question of whether microfinance has helped or hindered Mongolian …

Mountain Monitor-1st Quarter 2012, Mark Muro, Kenan Fikri

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

For three years now the Mountain Monitor — Brookings Mountain West’s Mountain Zone variant of Brookings’ MetroMonitor — has been tracking the region’s protracted, in-most-places anemic, economic recovery. Quarter-to-quarter, the Monitor has reported on a slow healing of the region’s metropolitan economies that has differed starkly from the region’s past boom-bust cycles.

An Empirical Estimate Of The Optimal Level Of Fiscal Deficit In Guinea, Emmanuel A. Onwioduokit Jun 2012

An Empirical Estimate Of The Optimal Level Of Fiscal Deficit In Guinea, Emmanuel A. Onwioduokit

Economic and Financial Review

Excessive deficits, irrespective of the mode of financing, are assumed to be growth retarding. The conventional wisdom is that high budget deficit is a source of economic instability. Empirical research, however, does not conclusively support this conventional wisdom; results are mixed and controversial across countries . These conflicting results have raised the important question of heterogeneity and also underscored the usefulness of time series data for country specific studies in order to address heterogeneity. This paper sought to ascertain the relationship between fiscal deficits and economic growth in Guinea and to find the threshold level of fiscal, deficit that is …

Financial Inclusion & Economic Development: A Case Study Of Turkey And A Cross-Country Analysis Of European Union, Recep Yorulmaz May 2012

Financial Inclusion & Economic Development: A Case Study Of Turkey And A Cross-Country Analysis Of European Union, Recep Yorulmaz

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Financial development enhances human development, and access to financial services makes a positive impact on people's lives particularly poor people. In addition, financial development reduces income inequality and boosts incomes. Over the last few decades, policymakers have considered financial sector reforms that promote financial inclusion. This paper attempts to show how financial inclusion is correlated with standard measures of economic development and economic well-being. To this end, we first measure the extent of financial inclusion by comparing economies and regions over time. Then, using this index of financial inclusion, we identify the factors associated with financial inclusion using a …

Mediating Incentive Use: A Time-Series Assessment Of Economic Development Deals In North Carolina, T. William Lester, Nichola Lowe, Allan Freyer Apr 2012

Mediating Incentive Use: A Time-Series Assessment Of Economic Development Deals In North Carolina, T. William Lester, Nichola Lowe, Allan Freyer

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

State incentive granting for the purpose of firm retention or recruitment remains highly controversial and is often portrayed as antithetical to long-range economic development planning. This paper uses quasi-experimental methods to measure the impact of state-level economic development incentives on employment growth at the establishment level in North Carolina. Using North Carolina’s rich history of strategic planning and sector-based economic development as a backdrop, we develop a theory of sectoral “mediation.” This enables us to compare the effectiveness of incentives offered in mediated and nonmediated industries and show that when incentives are coupled with sectoral economic development efforts they generate …

Foreign Direct Investment In Italy 2000-2010: Spatial Patterns And Implications, Enzo Crescentini Apr 2012

Foreign Direct Investment In Italy 2000-2010: Spatial Patterns And Implications, Enzo Crescentini

Masters Theses

Foreign direct investment (FDI) has long been shown to be an important driver of economic growth as well as a source of knowledge transfer in host countries. Italy, now the tenth largest economy in the world, has a remarkable distribution of FDI characterized by a metropolitan industrial North and what is commonly referred to as an economically unfit or "backwards" South. Given these regional differences, Italy faces many interesting challenges in attracting FDI in the current global economic climate. The nation must attract capital to less-developed regions as well as to the extensive industrial clusters in the North that are …

Mountain Monitor-4th Quarter 2011, Mark Muro, Kenan Fikri Mar 2012

Mountain Monitor-4th Quarter 2011, Mark Muro, Kenan Fikri

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

Recovery was firmly underway in the Intermountain West by the fourth quarter of 2011 but its pace varied considerably across the region’s 10 major metropolitan areas. Six of the 10 metros saw job growth in the fourth quarter but only four saw it accelerate over the previous one. Output grew everywhere but only in half of the region’s metros did the pace of growth quicken. The unemployment rate was down across the board from one year earlier. House prices in most markets stabilized. Yet signs of a robust, sustained, and self-fueling recovery remained elusive.

National economic indicators from early 2012 …

Generality In Nanotechnologies And Its Relationship To Economic Performance, Fernando Gomez Baquero Jan 2012

Generality In Nanotechnologies And Its Relationship To Economic Performance, Fernando Gomez Baquero

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the history if economic analysis there is perhaps no more important question than the one of how economic development is achieved. For more than a century, economists have explored the role of technology in economic growth but there is still much to be learned about the effect that technologies, in particular emerging ones, have on economic growth and productivity. The objective of this research is to understand the relationship between nanotechnologies and economic growth and productivity, using the theory of General Purpose Technology (GPT)-driven economic growth. To do so, the Generality Index (calculated from patent data) was used to …
