The Impact Of High Speed Rail On Fdi Attraction In Chinese Cities, Xinyue Wang
The Impact Of High Speed Rail On Fdi Attraction In Chinese Cities, Xinyue Wang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
As China enters the "high-speed rail era," the construction of high-speed rail has advanced rapidly, establishing the world's largest and most sophisticated high-speed rail network. This study examines the impact of high-speed rail on foreign direct investment (FDI) using a quasi-natural experiment approach. Utilizing panel data from 300 prefecture-level cities in China from 2008 to 2021, a multi-time-point difference-in-differences (DID) model is constructed to assess the causal relationship between high-speed rail development and FDI attraction. After confirming the parallel trend assumption, the regression results indicate that the opening of high-speed rail has a positive effect on a city’s ability to …

An Insight Into Trade And Inequality: A Cross-Country Income Quintile Analysis, Karn Leela-Adisorn
An Insight Into Trade And Inequality: A Cross-Country Income Quintile Analysis, Karn Leela-Adisorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study examines how international trade affected income inequality in 69 countries between 2006 and 2019, a time when globalization was slowing down. Unlike earlier studies focused on periods of rapid trade expansion, this research reevaluates the trade-inequality link under new global conditions. It uses the Gini coefficient and income quintile shares to capture different aspects of income inequality. While the Gini index offers a broad measure, quintile shares reveal more detailed distributional changes, especially among lower and middle-income groups. The findings reveal that greater trade openness and export intensity are generally associated with higher income inequality. Specifically, these forms of …

Examining The Antecedents Of Return Policy Leniency In Ecommerce, E. Mitchell Church, Richelle Oakley Dasouza, Olajumoke A. Awe
Finance and Economics
As eCommerce has become widespread, the challenge of successfully navigating the returns process has grown perilous. The product returns issue is even more difficult for microenterprises that sell unique or custom products with fewer resources. The authors examined the impact of the antecedents of return policy leniency, specifically economic and social success factors. Using a web crawler over a 24-week period, the authors collected and analyzed data for a sample of 781 shops from Etsy, an eCommerce platform. Results indicate that the well-studied factor of sales, in addition to a new social factor – community dialogue – impacts an Etsy …
Armed Conflict And Household Water Sources, George Naufal, Michael A. Malcolm, Vidya Diwakar
Armed Conflict And Household Water Sources, George Naufal, Michael A. Malcolm, Vidya Diwakar
Economics & Finance Faculty Publications
Access to safe drinking water is among the most important determinants of public health outcomes. We pair household-level data from Iraq together with data on armed conflict and adopt a generalized difference-in-differences approach to study the relationship between household drinking water sources and armed conflict intensity. We find that households located in conflict-affected areas are more likely to use piped water accessed at their homes or bottled water as their primary source of drinking water, but are less likely to use public water sources or tanked water delivered on trucks and carts. We explore the temporal dynamics of these adjustments …

Undergraduate Research Awards
The Olympic Games have been known as the most celebrated international sporting event. However, the event has also faced countless criticisms regarding its environmental impact and the lack of benefits it brings to the host country’s economy. The paper analyzes the trade-offs between the environmental quality of a country and its economic growth that host countries make when deciding to host the Olympics. Specifically, this research seeks to explore how the Olympic Games influence the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and carbon emissions of the host countries.

Essays On The Market For Higher Education, Samuel Lawrence Rhoads Glick
Theses and Dissertations--Economics
This dissertation studies the market for higher education and impacts of higher education policy on the market. In the first chapter, I estimate the short-run elasticity of supply of higher education using the rollout of state merit grant programs as plausibly exogenous variation in student demand for in-state higher education. I find that public and private not-for-profit four-year institutions have elastic supply responses to these programs. Public institutions have an estimated elasticity of 2.1 and private institutions have an estimated elasticity of 1.34. I estimate the causal effects of marginally qualifying for and receiving the federal Pell Grant and the …

Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy
The reasons behind the gender wage disparity in the Kyrgyz Republic are investigated in this paper using information from the 2019 Life in Kyrgyzstan (LiK) survey. Given its transitioning economy and post-Soviet socioeconomic environment, Kyrgyzstan offers a special case within the larger framework of gender wage gaps worldwide. The pay disparity is broken down in this research into explainable variations based on observable characteristics and an unexplained component that might be discriminatory using the Heckman and Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition approach. The results indicate the existence of gender discrimination in wage determination since a large amount of the gender wage gap is …

Optimal Test Length: How Many Pages Do I Need To Grade (Or Even Write)?
Optimal Test Length: How Many Pages Do I Need To Grade (Or Even Write)?
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
This paper examines how test length affects average scores and standard deviations in exam grading. After writing (unnecessarily) long exams, we test if decreasing the number of pages changes the average and standard deviation relative to longer exams. When testing exams four to six pages long, we find that exams above four pages do not seem to add any precision to the averages or standard deviations. Additionally, we find that a three-page exam has the same average and standard deviation, but exams with fewer than three pages change the distribution of student grades, making it harder to distinguish student quality.

Journal of Economics and Finance Education
In a currency carry trade, an investor borrows money in a low interest rate currency and invests in a high interest rate currency. The trade is profitable if the future exchange rate does not adjust to the interest rate differential. After downloading exchange rate data, a Monte Carlo simulation of a carry trade is performed in Excel based on a normal distribution and the data’s mean and standard deviation. A bootstrapping carry trade simulation exercise is also generated by randomly selecting observations from the historical data. In contrast to the Monte Carlo simulation, the bootstrapping exercise preserves the skewness within …
