Co2 Pricing Impact On Partially Regulated Market, Love Gami Apr 2024

Co2 Pricing Impact On Partially Regulated Market, Love Gami

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

With climate change becoming a growing concern, carbon trading has gained attention as a key solution to reducing carbon emissions. However, this raises a concern about whether polluters pass the cost of carbon to electricity prices. This study aims to assess the impact of CO2 pricing on electricity prices in the PJM market where some areas are regulated by carbon trading while others are not. Our findings reveal a significant impact of CO2 prices across all regulated areas, encompassing both real-time and day-ahead markets. Moreover, the impact extends to non-regulated areas, indicating a spillover effect within the PJM market. Interestingly, …

A Gravity Model Of International Student Flows, Luciana Mendoza, Samuel Schreyer Apr 2024

A Gravity Model Of International Student Flows, Luciana Mendoza, Samuel Schreyer

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Our research aims to use a gravity model to assess the importance of geographical distance and other macroeconomic factors associated with the destination country chosen by students when pursuing tertiary education abroad. We analyze a large sample of data that includes international students from nearly every country in the world from 2013 to 2021. Our results indicate that geographical distance is an important factor when students choose to study abroad and that this effect is most pronounced for students from lower-income countries. We also find that the flow of international students became more sensitive to geographical distance as the years …

Evaluating Macro-Policy Attitudes About Abortion In The United States, Christopher Olds, Miriam Guadalupe Benavides-Ortega, Madison May Albers, Rocio Figueroa-Castro

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Prior research on public opinion demonstrates attitudes about major issues often shift/move together. In other words, public support for government involvement in domestic affairs across multiple policy areas can be indicative of the general policy sentiment or public mood at any given point in time. In exploring specific issue areas in isolation, researchers can assess whether change in opinion on an issue area is significantly linked to fluctuations in views about macroeconomic conditions. The current research project will contrast quarterly public support for government involvement in the issue area of abortion through vector autoregression time series techniques examining whether prior …

Community And Regional Economic Analysis: Unveiling Economic Dynamics With The Location Quotient Method And Beyond, Daniela M. Mattos Apr 2024

Community And Regional Economic Analysis: Unveiling Economic Dynamics With The Location Quotient Method And Beyond, Daniela M. Mattos

Cornhusker Economics

In addition to the Location Quotient analysis, several other economic development analytical tools can contribute valuable insights to investment decisions, such as population-employment ratios and shift-share analysis. The use concomitant of these tools boosts the information provided by the Location Quotient analysis, offering a more holistic perspective. Recognizing that each analytical tool provides only a partial view, it is essential not to rely solely on one method when making investment decisions. Comprehensive decision-making necessitates leveraging multiple tools to gain a more nuanced and accurate understanding of local economies.

Test anxiety impacts traditional-aged undergraduate business students and influences their academic performance and overall well-being. This study explored the efficacy of massage therapy (MT) as a means of mitigating test anxiety within this demographic. Building on existing literature that addresses the consequences of anxiety and alternative coping mechanisms, this research study focused on MT as a potential strategy for test anxiety management. The study employed the Adult Manifest Anxiety Scale–College Version (AMAS-C) to gather data from participants at a private liberal arts institution in the East South-Central region of the United States. An experimental group received an MT intervention, while …

Limit Theory And Inference In Non-Cointegrated Functional Coefficient Regression, Ying Wang, Yundong Tu, Peter C.B. Phillips Apr 2024

Limit Theory And Inference In Non-Cointegrated Functional Coefficient Regression, Ying Wang, Yundong Tu, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Functional coefficient (FC) cointegrating regressions offer empirical investigators flexibility in modeling economic relationships by introducing covariates that influence the direction and intensity of comovement among nonstationary time series. FC regression models are also useful when formal cointegration is absent, in the sense that the equation errors may themselves be nonstationary, but where the nonstationary series display well-defined FC linkages that can be meaningfully interpreted as correlation measures involving the covariates. The present paper proposes new nonparametric estimators for such FC regression models where the nonstationary series display linkages that enable consistent estimation of the correlation measures between them. Specifically, we …

Optimizing Nba Roster Construction, Nick R. Riccardi

Sport Management - All Scholarship

This study aims to quantify the effect that complementary player types have on team success in the National Basketball Association. Using cluster analysis, player-seasons are redefined from their traditional basketball positions to better encompass the roles that players play. For the 10 seasons of data, the best player for each of the 30 teams in the league is determined and teams are grouped based on the cluster of their best player. Ordinary Least Squares regressions are performed to test what player types fit together best. The results of this study show the importance of complementary workers to a firm’s success.

Paradisiacal Protection: Exploring Governance In Sustainable Spaces, Rylee Stanton Apr 2024

Paradisiacal Protection: Exploring Governance In Sustainable Spaces, Rylee Stanton

Honors College Theses

Biosphere reserves exist officially as “learning places for sustainable development,” yet they also embody an attempt to bring together ecological governance with market-based and localized solutions to the problem of economic development (UNESCO, 2020). This thesis investigates the conditions under which biosphere reserves became reimagined as an all-encompassing solution to such a diverse set of global governance challenges. I explore the relationship between biosphere reserves and the evolving discourse on sustainable development within global governance. Drawing on Foucault-inspired literature on governmentality and “technologies of governance,” I examine the practices, discourses, and subjects that have made biosphere reserves visible and governable …

Sustainable Fashion In New Era: Exploring Consumer Resilience And Goals In The Post-Pandemic, Joohye Hwang, Xun Sun, Li Zhao, Song-Yi Youn

School of Business Faculty Papers

Abstract: This study examines the underlying mechanisms that lead to sustainable fashion consumption in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. Particularly, this study explores the complex relations between resilient coping mechanisms, consumer life goals, and sustainable fashion consumption, combining Goal Content Theory and the Consumer Sustainability Orientation framework. The findings obtained from partial least squares structural equation modeling analysis using 503 responses confirm that resilient coping positively influenced both intrinsic and extrinsic life goals. While intrinsic goals reinforce all aspects of sustainability orientation (ecological, social, and economic), extrinsic goals show a contrasting effect—positively affecting economic orientation but negatively impacting ecological and social …

Making College Worth It: Inequalities In Higher Education And How To Solve Them, Katharine Meyer Apr 2024

Making College Worth It: Inequalities In Higher Education And How To Solve Them, Katharine Meyer

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Most students who graduate from college go on to earn higher wages, have more employment stability, and enjoy better health. While posted tuitions are high, a “high price, high aid” approach to college pricing means that the average cost of college has actually declined in recent years. Yet, public confidence in higher education is at an all-time low. What explains this tension? Who gains from going to college and who does not? What can colleges do to change perceptions about the value of a college education? This lecture by Brookings Institution scholar Katharine Meyer highlights trends in college enrollment and …

Cognitive And Economic Development, John Luke Gallup Apr 2024

Cognitive And Economic Development, John Luke Gallup

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

A burgeoning literature finds that early childhood risk factors have large causal effects on individuals' cognitive development, education and earnings, but has not assessed the impact on the economy as a whole.

Cognitive ability is the foundation of human capital and the capacity to learn. The risk factors for poor cognitive development are very high in many countries. Each risk factor also causes child mortality, making child survival a viable proxy for good cognitive development conditions. The cognitive development of current workers happened decades earlier when they were children, providing a predetermined correlate. Controlling for country characteristics, income levels and …

Reassessing The Linkages Among Entrepreneurship, Institutions And Growth, Edinaldo Tebaldi, Joilson Giorno Apr 2024

Reassessing The Linkages Among Entrepreneurship, Institutions And Growth, Edinaldo Tebaldi, Joilson Giorno

Mathematics and Economics Faculty Journal Articles

This article examines the role of institutions and entrepreneurship to foster economic development under increasing complex economic structures caused by structural changes. The empirical work utilizes data from several sources including the Penn World Table 9.1, The Global Entrepreneurship and Development Institute, the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) at the MIT, and The International Country Risk Guide (ICRG). The empirical work circumvents the endogeneity and heterogeneity problem that plague cross-country regressions by using the Arellano and Bover (1995) and Blundell and Bond (1998) system GMM estimator. The results show that while entrepreneurship is positively correlated to economic development, this correlation …

Impact Of Snap On Food Insecurity: A Michigan And Indiana Case Study, Cecelia Chapleau Apr 2024

Impact Of Snap On Food Insecurity: A Michigan And Indiana Case Study, Cecelia Chapleau

Honors Theses

Food insecurity is one of the most pervasive and concerning problems in the United States. Approximately 1 in every 13 households within the United States was food insecure at some point during 2022 (Rabbitt et al., 2023) Food insecurity occurs when households have a limited ability to access nutritious foods, there is a limited supply of safe, healthy foods, or they are unable to obtain food in socially acceptable ways (Anderson, 1990). Low food security is associated with adverse health outcomes like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and poor mental health, which contributes to the severity of the problem (Thomas …

Likelihood Ratio Test For Markov Switching Parameters, Li Zhang Apr 2024

Likelihood Ratio Test For Markov Switching Parameters, Li Zhang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

I propose a likelihood ratio test for fixed unit root against time switching unit root models. Our test is different from the existing jump detection literature centered on the application of various forms of Augmented Dickey-Fuller tests. Our methodology involves the inclusion of random coefficients, which effectively capture both expansion and contraction behaviors. We show that the contiguous alternatives converge to the null hypothesis at the order of $T^{-3/4}$, where $T$ is the sample size. Our test is asymptotically optimal in the sense that it maximizes a weighted power function. We derive the asymptotic distribution of our test under the …

Green Transition And Financial Stability: The Role Of Green Monetary And Macroprudential Policies And Vouchers, Ying Tung Chan, Maria Teresa Punzi, Hong Zhao Apr 2024

Green Transition And Financial Stability: The Role Of Green Monetary And Macroprudential Policies And Vouchers, Ying Tung Chan, Maria Teresa Punzi, Hong Zhao

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

This paper analyzes a mix of alternative policies in supporting the green transition and the phase-out of fossil fuels, without compromising financial stability. An environmental dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (E-DSGE) model with two sectors (green and brown) and endogenous default is developed to assess potential climate-induced financial stability threats that can be mainly generated through physical and transition risks mechanism. Those risks are evaluated through a compound capital depreciation shock and a carbon tax shock. The paper offers several findings. First of all, a too stringent carbon tax would increase the medium-term default rate in both sectors, harming financial stability …

The Economic Impacts Of State-Run Agricultural Energy Efficiency And Sustainability Grants – Are There Actually Long-Term Profit And Labor Market Benefits?, Amanda Spielman

Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics

Farms, whether large, public corporations, or small family farms are often considered the backbone of America. Due to the impact of weather on crop production, the fluctuation in input prices, and the reliance of the rest of the economy on the agricultural industry, the government provides support programs and funding opportunities for farmers to help provide price and production stability. While some studies have been completed to assess the effectiveness of federally funded agriculture programs, little research has been done on the impact of state programs and is especially lacking on the effectiveness of sustainability programs. This study aims to …

The results indicate the greater total expenditure, a greater salary spread (range and variance), and greater salaries for the highest …

How Spending Patterns Of Different Groups Affect Long And Short-Term Savings, Peter Misiaszek Apr 2024

How Spending Patterns Of Different Groups Affect Long And Short-Term Savings, Peter Misiaszek

Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics

Many young Americans are concerned whether they will have sufficient savings as they age. This paper will explore the factors that influence the spending habits of young Americans and how those patterns correlate to lifetime savings. There is a plethora of psychological and sociological factors that contribute to different patterns of spending which ultimately affect long-term savings. Savings rates have dropped significantly over the past few decades, and this decline is leaving many Americans without sufficient wealth for retirement. Data that will be collected will be used to run a regression model, ultimately to conclude what the most important factors …
