More frequent and punctuated severe events such as dry spells are among the more salient manifestations of climate change. Because dry spells often co-occur with drought and heat waves, understanding the effects of dry spells and heat waves requires a multi-timescale and multi-stressor perspective. Using a global panel of daily precipitation and temperature from 1979 to 2016, we provide evidence that 4-5 week dry spells that occur during the hottest part of the year depress growth in crop production. The effects of these extreme events are modified by existing drought, aridity, and by heat waves. After accounting for productivity and …

Researchers have shown that most vehicles spend the majority of their time parked in parking garages, lots, or driveways. During this time, their computing resources are unused and untapped. This has led to substantial interest in Vehicular Cloud, an area of research in which each vehicle acts as a computation node. The main difference between traditional cloud computing and vehicular cloud computing is the availability of nodes. In traditional clouds, nodes are available 24/7, while in vehicular clouds, nodes (vehicles) are only available while parked in parking lots. This would involve a large scale-up of child care service supply, precipitating a large increase in employment in the child care sector, while increasing wages for jobs in that sector. The Chilean development model have not been able to generate employment for the most impoverished groups. Moreover, Chile is vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, this thesis examines through a heterodox economic lens a Job Guarantee Program for Chile can serve as alternative to promote social inclusion and sustainable development. Using input-output model, the Job Guarantee Program has higher employment creation potential. It can generate 196 jobs per billion pesos, of which 185 are direct jobs and 11 are indirect jobs. In 1991, Zambia launched one of the most orthodox structural adjustments programs (SAPs) in Africa. The last and longest chapter of its fitful history with the IMF and World Bank, Zambia’s SAP commenced during the euphoria following the ouster of long-time President Kenneth Kaunda, when it was presented as the only strategy for dealing with the country’s economic collapse. What followed was one of Africa’s most striking experiments with rapid liberalisation, leading to budgetary stabilisation and increased investment but also sudden unemployment and impoverishment. Behavioral economics is an increasingly influential field across the social sciences, including public administration. But while some behavioral economics ideas have spread rapidly in public administration research, we argue that a broader range of behavioral economics concepts can and should be applied. We begin by outlining some central models and concepts from behavioral economics to fix ideas, including the rational model and the “behavioral” response. We then discuss how a variety of heretofore underutilized behavioral economics concepts can be applied to a specific area of work in public administration – bureaucratic decision making. This paper explores the coopetitive relationship between a private firm and a utility when the utility simultaneously competes with the firm in the output (EV charging-station) market and potentially cooperates in the input (electricity) market through its choice of a mark-up rate on the price of electricity supplied to the firm’s charging stations. In the absence of regulation, we find the utility chooses to self-regulate itself (i.e., cooperate with the firm) in the input market in order to continue earning revenue from the sale of electricity to the firm’s charging stations. After the crisis in 2008, blockchain and systemic risk have seen increasing interest. In this thesis I advocate for more research to be conducted on the two topics jointly after noticing a gap in the literature regarding the effects that using a blockchain based financial system could have on systemic risk. The thesis is an attempt to set the stage for future research, by describing the major sources of systemic risk, the most important characteristics of blockchain, and finally suggesting some topics for future research on systemic risk and blockchain in areas where blockchain could have the biggest impact.

With the triple crisis of capitalism looming and, in the U.S., a poorly performing welfare state, Universal Basic Income (UBI) has returned to popular attention. This report sets out to test the conflicting global and local narratives about the impact of COVID-19 on remittance flows in the South Africa-Zimbabwe migration corridor. Remittance pessimism vanished during the second year of the pandemic as data indicated that remittances had not suffered the predicted collapse. Given survey findings, including the survey reported on here, about the depressed earning and remitting capacity and behaviour of migrants during the pandemic, there was no obvious explanation as to why remittances had not plunged in 2020. We evaluate the aggregate effects of expansions of credit supply in environments where subsistence self-employment is prevalent. We extend a standard macro development model to include unemployment risk, which becomes a key driver of selection into self-employment. The model is consistent with the joint distribution of earnings and occupations, the reaction of wages to labor demand shocks, and the small effects of expansions in the supply of microloans on the earnings of the self-employed. We find that the elasticity of aggregate output to expansions in credit supply is proportional to the elasticity of individual earnings. This proportionality arises due to …

We analyze consumer demand behavior using Dynamic Random Utility Model (DRUM). Under DRUM, a consumer draws a utility function from a stochastic utility process in each period and maximizes this utility subject to her budget constraint. DRUM allows unrestricted time correlation and cross-section heterogeneity in preferences. We fully characterize DRUM for a panel data of consumer choices and budgets. DRUM is linked to a finite mixture of deterministic behavior represented as the Kronecker product of static rationalizable behavior. This paper uses value functions to characterize the pure-strategy subgame-perfect equilibria of an arbitrary, possibly infinite-horizon game. It specifies the game’s extensive form as a pentaform (Streufert 2023p, arXiv:2107.10801v4), which is a set of quintuples formalizing the abstract relationships between nodes, actions, players, and situations (situations generalize information sets). Two older traditions, Monetarism and the Wicksell Connections have always dissented, arguing that how agents gather information and apply it to the coordination of their activities are prior problems requiring attention before equilibrium can, or cannot, be assumed.
