วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างพฤติกรรมการสูบบุหรี่และการดื่มเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์ในประเทศไทย โดยใช้กลุ่มตัวอย่างจากการสำรวจพฤติกรรมการสูบบุหรี่และการดื่มสุราของประชากร พ.ศ. 2560 ที่ตอบสัมภาษณ์ข้อมูลพื้นฐานทางด้านประชากร ข้อมูลรายละเอียดเกี่ยวกับพฤติกรรมการสูบบุหรี่ และข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับพฤติกรรมการดื่มสุราหรือเครื่องดื่มที่มีแอลกอฮอล์ ซึ่งจัดเก็บและสำรวจโดยสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 89,154 ตัวอย่าง มาวิเคราะห์ด้วยแบบจำลองทางเศรษฐมิติ Bivariate Probit Model โดยกำหนดให้ ตัวแปรอัตราส่วนจำนวนนักดื่มรายจังหวัด ตัวแปรดัชนีราคาเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์รายจังหวัด และตัวแปรอัตราส่วนจำนวนการเกิดความรุนแรงในครัวเรือนรายจังหวัดเป็นตัวแปรเครื่องมือ (Instrumental Variables) ของพฤติกรรมการดื่มเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์เพื่อบรรเทาปัญหา Endogeneity Bias ที่เกิดขึ้น ผลการศึกษาพบว่าคนที่เป็นนักดื่มในปัจจุบันจะทำให้มีโอกาสในการเป็นผู้ที่สูบบุหรี่ในปัจจุบันด้วยสูงขึ้นอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ กล่าวคือคนที่มีพฤติกรรมการดื่มเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์จะทำให้มีโอกาสในการมีพฤติกรรมการสูบบุหรี่ร่วมด้วย และนอกจากนี้ ผลการศึกษายังพบว่ามีปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อการมีพฤติกรรมการสูบบุหรี่ ได้แก่ เพศ, ภูมิภาคที่อาศัย, อายุ, ระดับการศึกษา, สถานภาพสมรส, สถานภาพการทำงาน, ราคาผลิตภัณฑ์ยาสูบโดยเปรียบเทียบ และรายได้โดยเฉลี่ยต่อเดือน ซึ่งจากผลการศึกษาที่กล่าวมานั้น สะท้อนให้เห็นว่าการมีพฤติกรรมการดื่มเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์ที่แตกต่างกันทำให้มีพฤติกรรมการสูบบุหรี่ที่แตกต่างกันเช่นกัน รวมถึงยังชี้ให้เห็นถึงลักษณะการเป็นสินค้าที่ใช้ประกอบกันระหว่างบุหรี่และเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์อีกด้วย

We ask whether linking savings accounts to contests can promote saving. We do this by offering contest-linked accounts to individuals in rural Uganda where poverty is a serious problem. Our design builds off of results in experimental economics documenting excessive competitiveness in contests, with the goal of harnessing this behavior for the good. We find that, properly designed, we encourage savings beyond both pre-treatment levels and the control group. We explore reasonable heterogeneous treatment effects and document long lasting impacts on wealth.

I exploit geographic and temporal variation in recreational marijuana dispensing to estimate its effect on alcohol related prices and mortalities. I interpret the finding of a casual reduction in alcoholic poisonings as evidence for a substitutive relationship, contributing to a growing marijuana policy literature and the divided economic literature exploring substitution between the two goods.

This first paper (co-authored) tests the effect of Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II), which entered into force on 3 January 2018, on European-based sell-side financial analysts. We find that MiFID II, in part, unbundles brokers’ execution and research services. We assess the effectiveness of MiFID II in unbundling and find that the trading volume generated by the brokers that issued recommendation revisions declined significantly after the enactment of MiFID II. The first two papers examine the impacts of the country’s Critical Illness Insurance program on health-related outcomes. The third paper studies the effects of maternal education on children’s early childhood health outcomes and cognitive skills.

The first chapter evaluates the impact of a recent social health insurance benefits expansion program on middle-aged and elderly individuals. My dissertation consists of three papers on the response of various economic indicators to crude oil shocks. In the first paper, I investigate the Western Australian gasoline market for asymmetric responses in gasoline prices to changes in input costs, otherwise known as the rockets and feathers hypothesis. This theory states that after a positive cost shock, firms will swiftly increase their retail prices to consumers; after a decrease in input costs, however, they take longer to adjust and lower prices. This pilot study addresses the impact motivating operations have on delay discounting of food in the presence of real food. Six participants were recruited and randomly assigned to three food stimuli groups (donut, vegetable, and control) and assigned to either a deprivation or non-deprivation condition within the group. Participants were asked to complete a set of questionnaires and a delay discounting task. Demographics and anthropometric measurements were obtained from each participant. Purpose – This paper aims to ask whether a range of stock market factors contain information that is useful to investors by generating a trading rule based on one-step-ahead forecasts from rolling and recursive regressions. Design/methodology/approach – Using USA data across 3,256 firms, the authors estimate stock returns on a range of factors using both fixed-effects panel and individual regressions. The authors use rolling and recursive approaches to generate time-varying coefficients. This study analyzes the health impacts of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), a common anthropogenic pollutant resulting from vehicles, manufacturing, and wood burning. PM2.5 is an emission of particular concern given its small size of roughly 2.5 micrometers, allowing it to stay in the atmosphere for up to 10 days and penetrate the deepest area of the lungs, the alveoli. This penetration can lead to adverse respiratory and cardiovascular health outcomes, and ultimately lead to an increased mortality rate. This paper investigates the connection between CEO types and firm efficiency. I utilize the general ability index (GAI) as a proxy to examine and separate CEO types: generalist CEOs and specialist CEOs. Initially, I applied the pooled ordinary least square (OLS) and fixed effect regression on 26,830 firm-year observations to explore the GAI effect on firm efficiency. The finding shows that GAI has a negative impact on firm efficiency. It indicates that CEOs with lower GAI are better at improving firm efficiency; for instance, specialist CEOs are preferable to generalist CEOs. While advocates argue that gentrification changes the neighborhood food environment critical to children’s diet and health, we have little evidence documenting such changes or the consequences for their health outcomes. Using rich longitudinal, individual-level data on nearly 115,000 New York City children, including egocentric measures of their food environment and BMI, we examine the link between neighborhood demographic change (“gentrification”), children’s access to restaurants and supermarkets, and their weight outcomes. We find that children in rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods see increased access to fast food and wait-service restaurants and reduced access to corner stores and supermarkets compared to those in non-gentrifying …

Small business owners experienced a drastic economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Government pandemic assistance failed to reach many small business owners, especially those historically underserved by financial institutions. Drawing on a 2021 survey of 246 small business owners, the Social Policy Institute at Washington University in St. Louis descriptively examined the extent to which small business owners sought and received business assistance, and whether applications and approval of government assistance varied by race and ethnicity.
