Footballer Valuations: Valuing World-Class Football Players Against Transfer Fees, Louis Diblasi
Footballer Valuations: Valuing World-Class Football Players Against Transfer Fees, Louis Diblasi
Honors Projects in Economics
This paper aims to create a model to value European football players. It will do so by comparing a player's transfer fee and then measuring their value based on performances in the season after the transfer has occurred. The model will be applied to Europe's top five leagues: the English Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, and the German Bundesliga. This study takes variables from multiple past studies to be used in the model, and adds a valuation for goalkeepers, which has never been done before. The goal of this study is to measure the variables that contribute …

Assessing Happiness: An Evaluation Of The Latin American Paradox In The United States, Daniel J. Maisch
Honors Projects
Abstract: This research project investigates an array of pecuniary and non-pecuniary factors and their effect on happiness trends within the United States’ Latino population. Happiness Economics is a new field of economic study coined in the 1970s by Richard Easterlin. This new field of study laid the foundation for further research and, ultimately, led to the discovery of the Latin American Paradox. The Latin American Paradox identifies high levels of happiness amongst Latinos within Latin America and the United States, with low levels of economic prosperity. This study uses Mental Health data from IPUMS Health Survey to investigate the different …
‘Vox Populi?:’ Assessing Nato Popularity Relative To Political And Economic Indicators In Selected Member Nations, Zachary W. Cheek
‘Vox Populi?:’ Assessing Nato Popularity Relative To Political And Economic Indicators In Selected Member Nations, Zachary W. Cheek
Undergraduate Economic Review
This paper seeks to identify the impact of political and economic conditions on a nation’s popularity/favorability ratings towards North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the world’s most powerful military alliance. It is found that in random-effect models there exists a significant positive relationship between a country’s democratic strength and favorability, as well as a negative relationship regarding unemployment. In fixed-effect models, however, there is slight evidence of a positive relationship with per-capita GDP, as well as negative relationships with the unemployment rate and the trade index. Overall, differences in member-nations largely account for whether democratic or macroeconomic conditions influence support.

Apakah Penerapan Desentralisasi Memberikan Dampak Yang Tidak Baik? Studi Permukiman Kumuh Di Jabodetabek, Meila Husna, Muhammad Halley Yudhistira
Jurnal Kebijakan Ekonomi
The implementation of decentralization should have a positive impact on regional progress. Since its implementation in 2001, decentralization in Indonesia has become deeper and wider. Using the slum settlement policy as a study approach, this study will examine the impact of decentralization and how persistent these impacts are. The estimation results using RD-DiD shows that the implementation of decentralization has a negative correlation with the arrangement of slums in the Jabodetabek area. The area of slums is 45% greater than the year before decentralization or a non-decentralized area. Thus, in the aspect of structuring the slums, it can be concluded …

(1) Background: As gaps in the public health workforce grow in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, graduates of the schools of public health, especially Doctors of Public Health (DrPH), are poised to offer relief. While there are some known recruitment issues, student debt and debt impact on career choices are understudied. (2) Methods: In the present study, we perform a descriptive analysis of the potential impact of student debt on career choices among DrPH students and alumni in the United States using a cross-sectional national online survey. A total of 203 participants (66: alumni and 137: current students) completed …

The new coalition government has assumed power at a time of deep external and internal economic difficulties in the midst of a highly-polarized polity and society. The immediate temptation would be to distance itself from what the previous government had done and formulate a brand new package of initiatives. Unfortunately, this tradition is to be broken as it has always proved counterproductive and instead of remedying, it only aggravates the economic situation. In such uncertain times, sensible policy decisions need to be taken immediately to reassure the international financial community (institutions, credit rating agencies, bond markets and foreign investors), trading …
Teaching And Integrating Women’S Studies Into The Classroom: Perspectives Of Elementary Teachers, Thomas Lucey
Teaching And Integrating Women’S Studies Into The Classroom: Perspectives Of Elementary Teachers, Thomas Lucey
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Women’s studies represent an underappreciated aspect of elementary education. Whether or how classrooms and their resources portray, present, and value women role-models informs both boys and girls about what passes for acceptable communication, treatment, and conduct towards women. Indeed, the extent to which and the basis that a young citizenry is taught to appreciate others informs the nature of the conversations engaged.
This paper describes the results of a research study that interpreted elementary teachers’ perspectives of women’s studies in elementary settings. The online survey was administered as part of the registration for two workshops that prepared teachers in the …

Infrastructure Investment And European Economic Growth, John Ziolo
Infrastructure Investment And European Economic Growth, John Ziolo
Global Tides
As the global economy continues to recover from the impacts of Covid-19, there is significant discussion among policymakers as to the best mechanisms to stimulate recovery. One of those mechanisms is infrastructure investment. There is a large contingent of policymakers who believe that large, immediate spending on infrastructure will lead to significant economic growth. While another group is concerned about the secondary effects of such large government spending packages. With global economies still digging out of the covid shock and supply chains struggling to keep up with demand, there is no better time to explore the topic. This paper then …

Trade Liberalization And The Social Determinants Of Health: A Case Study Of Nafta's Impact On Mexico From 1994 To 2005, Maria Trubetskaya
Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals
Given the increased transnationalization of borders and economic interdependence between countries in the Global North and South, it is imperative to address how these trends impact the health and well being of the populations involved. The conventional neoliberal economic framework, however, falls short in explaining these dynamics due to its overemphasis of proximal determinants of health as direct consequences of commodification and free market activities. In congruence with those theoretical limitations, there is a limited assessment of more distal determinants – the social determinants of health (SDOH) – that are arguably more consequential for health and are interrelated with the …

Something Fishy In Seafood Trade?, Kathy Baylis, Lia Nogueira, Linlin Fan, Kathryn Pace
Cornhusker Economics
The safety of food imports continues to be in the spotlight. Globally, each year, contaminated food causes almost 1 in 10 people to fall ill and 420 thousand people to die (WHO, 2017). Protecting consumers from unsafe foods is complicated by the increased role of international trade in our food system. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that disease outbreaks associated with imported food increased from 1996 to 2014, with fish and produce being the main culprits (Gould et al., 2017). For example, in 2019, two separate cases of tuna from Vietnam were found to have sickened …

The Impact Of Afghan Opium Cultivation On The U.S. Opioid Epidemic, Zachary Wahab Cheek
The Impact Of Afghan Opium Cultivation On The U.S. Opioid Epidemic, Zachary Wahab Cheek
UNL Student Research Days Posters, Undergraduate
I argue here that increases in Afghan opium cultivation, the most prolific in the world, has depressed American prescription opioid and heroin prices, thereby increasing abuse risk in U.S. addict populations and increasing death rates. Utilizing a two-stage regression model with a sparse dataset from several national and international sources, I find evidence that a one percent increase in Afghan opium production is associated with a 0.122 percent increase in prescription opioid overdose deaths, and a 0.367 percent increase in heroin overdose deaths. Assessing the 2001-2002 Taliban opium ban with an identification strategy, I find that in this timeframe prescription …

Maturity Model For Customer-Centric Approach In Enterprise: The Case Of E-Commerce And Online Retail Industry, Soheil Zarrin
Dissertations and Theses
The network technologies are changing the dynamics of the interaction between customer and provider. Customers demand closer relationships and higher investment between partners, as well as cooperation between companies to build supporting technologies for their unique needs. Customer-centricity is defined as interaction with the customer through various touchpoints and aggregating these relations to create a position for the customer. Each Customer has a different need and expectation from the provider or seller, and companies need to be flexible enough to fulfill their needs. One of the reasons organizations invest less in customer experience is that they believe they are already …

King Behind Colonial Curtains: Kasilag And The Making Of Filipino National Culture, Paul Gabriel L. Cosme
King Behind Colonial Curtains: Kasilag And The Making Of Filipino National Culture, Paul Gabriel L. Cosme
International Studies Honors Projects
Filipino National Artist Lucrecia “King” Kasilag sought to preserve folk cultures and melded these with her Western training to produce works—scholarly, pedagogical, and compositional—that shaped national music and culture. This thesis is a critical biography that combines perspectives from postcolonial studies, political economy, and musicology to highlight forces that shaped Kasilag’s life while illustrating her successes and shortcomings on national culture. Through this biography, I argue, Filipino national culture must originate from intersectional struggles and negotiation among elites and masses; that this culture is about both resistance and acceptance—a national culture that is syncretic and quintessentially dynamic.

The Impact Of Foreign Investment On Firm Performance: Indonesia After The 2007 Fdi Reform, Nauval Hafiluddin, Arianto Arif Patunru
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays a crucial role in the economy of Indonesia. The new FDI law passed in 2007 serves as a new milestone in the FDI regime in Indonesia. As the country implements the new regulation, the impact of foreign investment on firm performance becomes an interesting subject. This paper aims to estimate the effect of foreign investment on the productivity and contribution of firms in relation to the new FDI law in Indonesia. This study employed a combination of Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and Difference-in-Differences (DiD) methods to eliminate endogeneity problems and to examine causality. We discover …

Why The Rate Of Return Of Religious School (Madrasah) Is Too Low: The Case In Indonesia, Elfindri Elfindri, Edi Ariyanto, Sri Maryati, Delfia Tanjung Sari
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
Religious schools (madrasah) in Indonesia have contributed to fulfilling the equity goals of education. Up to this point, studies on the rate of return of madrasah and its relation to general or vocational education remain limited. In contrast to the previous studies that omit madrasah from their analysis, this study pay greater attention to this particular type of education. By adopting the Mincerian model of the human capital and applying the semi-log earnings function to the 2012 data of the National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS) of Indonesia, this study discovers that the rate of return of graduates from madrasah is considerably …

From Art To Science: How Chess Engines Have Influenced The Game, Matthew Richey
Student Research Symposium
The development of chess engines has affected nearly every facet of the game, including approach to study, gameplay, and spectating. This has caused considerable controversy in the chess community. This paper aims to show the changes effectuated by these engines have been largely beneficial to the game. Research was conducted by reviewing scholarly articles, interviews with top chess players, and analyzing chess games. While there have been some changes that can be considered harmful to the art form of chess, the popularization and accessibility provided by these engines led to greater changes within the chess community.
