Pengaruh Pekerja Keluarga Dan Peran Inovasi Terhadap Produktivitas Usaha Di Indonesia, Subhan Fikri Lubis, Andi Fahmi Lubis
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
The purpose of this study is to estimate the influence of family involvement through business ownership (own capital) and the involvement of family members (family workers) in companies/micro and small enterprises in Indonesia on the productivity of their business. Based on previous studies, family involvement can decrease and increase productivity. With relatively small capital, less qualified workforce and low technology productivity of micro and small industries that employ family members within the company will tend to be lower because they will be more avoiding risky changes. The role of innovation can be proven as moderate in the research is expected …

Forecasting With Unbalanced Panel Data, Badi Baltagi, Long Liu
Forecasting With Unbalanced Panel Data, Badi Baltagi, Long Liu
Center for Policy Research
This paper derives the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) for an unbalanced panel data model. Starting with a simple error component regression model with unbalanced panel data and random effects, it generalizes the BLUP derived by Taub (1979) to unbalanced panels. Next it derives the BLUP for an unequally spaced panel data model with serial correlation of the AR(1) type in the remainder disturbances considered by Baltagi and Wu (1999). This in turn extends the BLUP for a panel data model with AR(1) type remainder disturbances derived by Baltagi and Li (1992) from the balanced to the unequally spaced panel …
Nonparametric Sample Splitting, Yoonseok Lee, Yulong Wang
Nonparametric Sample Splitting, Yoonseok Lee, Yulong Wang
Center for Policy Research
This paper develops a threshold regression model where an unknown relationship between two variables nonparametrically determines the threshold. We allow the observations to be crosssectionally dependent so that the model can be applied to determine an unknown spatial border for sample splitting over a random field. We derive the uniform rate of convergence and the nonstandard limiting distribution of the nonparametric threshold estimator. We also obtain the root-n consistency and the asymptotic normality of the regression coefficient estimator. Our model has broad empirical relevance as illustrated by estimating the tipping point in social segregation problems as a function of demographic …
Do Foster Care Agencies Discriminate Against Gay Couples? Evidence From A Correspondence Study, Mattie Mackenzie-Oiu, David Schwegman, Leonard M. Lopoo
Do Foster Care Agencies Discriminate Against Gay Couples? Evidence From A Correspondence Study, Mattie Mackenzie-Oiu, David Schwegman, Leonard M. Lopoo
Center for Policy Research
There has been considerable recent debate regarding proposed policies that would allow foster care administrators to discriminate on the basis of the sexual orientation of the foster parent. To date, however, we know very little about the level of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the foster care system. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first empirical investigation to ask whether foster care agencies, the public and nonprofit firms that facilitate foster care placements, respond similarly to emails sent by fictitious same-sex and heterosexual couples who inquire about becoming foster parents. Our results suggest that …
[Introduction To] Debating Sex Work, Lori Watson, Jessica Flanigan
[Introduction To] Debating Sex Work, Lori Watson, Jessica Flanigan
Bookshelf
In this 'for and against' work, ethicists Lori Watson and Jessica Flanigan debate the criminalization of sex work. Watson argues for a sex equality approach to prostitution in which buyers are criminalized and sellers are decriminalized, known as the Nordic Model. Flanigan argues that sex work should be fully decriminalized because decriminalization ensures respect for sex workers' and clients' rights, and is more effective than alternative policies.
Putting these two views on sex work into conversation with one another, and opening up space for readers to weigh both approaches, the book provides a thorough, accessible exploration of the issues surrounding …

This study is to examine why Thai people want to do flexible job by studying GrabFood as case study. Data in the study was collected from online survey which were directly responded by GrabFood workers and I use binary logistic to estimate results. The result found that preference for flexibility is the key factor workers are likely to do freelance. The result of this study is similar to other related studies in that flexibility is an important factor people go on freelance. Therefore, it can be concluded that increase in value of flexibility is a major reason for people to …
Determinants Of Tax Morale Using Structural Equation Model (Sem), Raymond S. Pacaldo, Rodiel C. Ferrer
Determinants Of Tax Morale Using Structural Equation Model (Sem), Raymond S. Pacaldo, Rodiel C. Ferrer
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper analyzes the impact of tax enforcement, trust in government, and demographic characteristics on the tax morale of firms in the Philippines. From the database of Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS), 864 firms were taken and analyzed using partial least squares on the structural equation of modeling (PLS-SEM). In the analysis, only trust in government, organizational form, and firm location provided a significant impact to tax morale. Thus, firms pay taxes religiously when the government acts trustworthily. On the other hand, sole proprietorship and Metro Manila firms exhibited lower tax morale as compared to corporations and outside …

Effect Of Moderating Variables: Financial Leverage And Dividend Payout Of Publicly-Listed Property Sector Of The Philippines, Cynthia P. Cudia, Harrison Kendrick L. Chun, Tristan Dranel M. Papa, Raveena S. Tahilramani, Althea R. Tan
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Various studies on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout have been conducted; however, different factors affecting this relationship remain unexplored. This study aimed to identify the effect of different firm-specific moderating variables on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout of Philippine publicly-listed companies under the property sector for the years 2012–2016. These firm-specific variables were classified into two categories—company profile and financial condition. By employing multiple regression with the interaction model, the results of this study found that business risk has a significant effect on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout. Similarly, firm size …
Estimating Value-At-Risk Of An Unconventional Portfolio, Elizabeth N. Mejía-Ricart
Estimating Value-At-Risk Of An Unconventional Portfolio, Elizabeth N. Mejía-Ricart
Honors Theses
Since the 2008 financial crisis, interest rates and bond yields have been low all through the recovery and expansion that followed, and they are still low. As a result, more investors have been attracted to US equities, a space of possibly higher returns. However, these returns come with a potential downside: risk of loss. One of the methods to assess this potential downside is value-at-risk (VaR), which gained momentum in the late 1990s. At the time, the market risk amendment to the 1988 Basle Capital Accord required commercial banks with significant trading activities to put aside capital to cover market …
Partisan Polarization And Resistance To Elite Messages: Results From Survey Experiments On Social Distancing, Syon Bhanot, D. J. Hopkins
Partisan Polarization And Resistance To Elite Messages: Results From Survey Experiments On Social Distancing, Syon Bhanot, D. J. Hopkins
Economics Faculty Works
COVID-19 compelled government officials in the U.S. and elsewhere to institute social distancing policies, shuttering much of the economy. At a time of low trust and high polarization, Americans may only support such disruptive policies when recommended by same-party politicians. A related concern is that some may resist advice from “elite” sources such as government officials or public health experts. We test these possibilities using novel data from two online surveys with embedded experiments conducted with approximately 2,000 Pennsylvania residents each, in spring 2020 (Study 1 in April and Study 2 in May-June). We uncover partisan differences in views on …
Diagnosing The Learning Environment For Diverse Students In Introductory Economics: An Analysis Of Relevance, Belonging, And Growth Mindsets, Amanda Bayer, Syon Bhanot, Erin Todd Bronchetti, Stephen A. O'Connell
Diagnosing The Learning Environment For Diverse Students In Introductory Economics: An Analysis Of Relevance, Belonging, And Growth Mindsets, Amanda Bayer, Syon Bhanot, Erin Todd Bronchetti, Stephen A. O'Connell
Economics Faculty Works
Using administrative and survey data, we diagnose the learning environment in an introductory economics course. Relative to men from overrepresented groups, women and underrepresented minority students finish the course reporting significantly lower measures of relevance, belonging, and growth mindsets, factors related to college success. For example, they are less likely to agree that their professor used relatable examples, more likely to report feeling different than the typical economics major, and less likely to report believing they could learn the material. We also describe a new, low-cost initiative expanding the role of undergraduate teaching assistants to promote a more inclusive environment.
Determinants Of Alumni Giving To A Private U.S. College: Evidence From Oberlin College, Kenneth Kitahata
Determinants Of Alumni Giving To A Private U.S. College: Evidence From Oberlin College, Kenneth Kitahata
Honors Papers
This paper studies the personal characteristics and factors that determine alumni giving using a dataset from Oberlin College from 1974-2019. Liberal arts colleges like Oberlin are especially dependent on gifts to cover operating expenses and fund endowments as they don’t receive direct public funding. Using Logit and Tobit regression, I find that females, graduates, age, alumni whose spouse attended Oberlin, being married, and GPA are associated with higher giving. Media coverage in years when Oberlin faces bad press lowers giving. The state charitable tax deduction increases giving on the intensive margin (total amount donated) but not the extensive margin (likelihood …

The Study Of Parental Educational Investment In Left-Behind Children In China, Zilin (Kelley) Zhong
Honors Papers
This paper studies the effect of lengths of separation between parents and child on the amount of tuition paid for children in China, using the China Family Panel Survey data from 2010, 2012 and 2014. It also studies the factors that affect tuition for rural left-behind children in China such as children's preferences for education, children's characteristics, parents' reasons to give birth, and teacher attributes, with provinces and year fixed effects. I found that mothers or fathers who live with their children for 2 to 4 months in the past year pay statistically significantly more tuition than fathers or mothers …

The Stock Connect Programs: A Study Of Their Impact On Chinese Stock Returns And Global Stock Markets Integration, Jiadi Cheng
Honors Papers
The Stock Connect programs are important steps for China to liberate its relatively restricted financial market. The Shanghai – Hong Kong Stock Connect program launched in 2014, and the Shenzhen – Hong Kong program launched in 2016 allowed both institutional and individual international investors access to the Chinese stock market for the first time. This paper studies the impact of the Stock Connect programs on Chinese stock returns and Chinese stock market’s integration with international stock markets using 2SLS regression analysis. Regression results show that the launch of the SH – HK Stock Connect program increased daily returns of all …
The Aca's Dependent Coverage Mandate: An Investigation Of Its Effects On Mortality With Regard To Race, Jack W. Derwin
The Aca's Dependent Coverage Mandate: An Investigation Of Its Effects On Mortality With Regard To Race, Jack W. Derwin
Honors Papers
I add to literature investigating the effects of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) dependent coverage mandate (DCM). I examine how the mandate, which increased health insurance coverage for 19 to 25 year-olds, impacted short-run mortality rates for the affected age group. Unlike previous research, I examine if and how young adult mortality was affected differentially by race. I use data from the CDC’s “WONDER” database to conduct difference-in-difference analysis to assess the effects of the policy change on mortality. I find that the DCM had a significant negative impact on mortality rates for the affected age group as a whole, …
Asset Portfolio Maturity Changes During The Financial Crisis: Evidence From U.S. Banks, Thomas W. Secrest
Asset Portfolio Maturity Changes During The Financial Crisis: Evidence From U.S. Banks, Thomas W. Secrest
Finance and Economics
This paper determines if the maturity structure of commercial banks' asset portfolios changed as a result of the financial crisis of the late 2000s and whether any changes in the portfolios may be homogeneous across bank size. A proxy for the maturity of rate-sensitive assets is constructed, and it is found that significant changes did begin to occur during the third quarter of 2008. The maturity structure of assets of relatively small banks gradually began to increase before leveling off six years later. The maturity of larger bank asset portfolios had been falling and continued to decrease for three more …

The Timing Of Childbirth: Does The Age Of First-Time Mothers Affect The Parental Gender Earnings Gap?, Anna Graves
The Timing Of Childbirth: Does The Age Of First-Time Mothers Affect The Parental Gender Earnings Gap?, Anna Graves
CMC Senior Theses
This paper assesses the impact the timing of first birth may have on the parental gender wage gap. Using data from the 2014 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), I use a pooled, cross-sectional sample of full-time parents in the United States labor force to examine the relationship between earnings and age at first birth for mothers and fathers and any relative difference that arises between the two. My findings indicate the presence of a parental gender wage gap, and that the timing of first birth can significantly impact parental wages. In addition, my results suggest that the timing …
Airline Fare Competition In The Post-Merger Era, Parker Michael Armstrong
Airline Fare Competition In The Post-Merger Era, Parker Michael Armstrong
Honors Theses and Capstones
This paper expands on the research of competition within the airline industry. This analysis estimates the fare-impact of new full-service or low-cost competition in city-pair markets in the domestic United States. Given the comprehensive restructuring of the airline industry as a result of the Delta-Northwest, United-Continental, and American-US Airways mergers, this analysis examines how the fare-impact of competition may have changed since the pre-merger era. This paper suggests evidence of a weaker effect regarding the entry of a low-cost carrier and a stronger effect regarding the entry of a legacy carrier in the post-merger era relative to the pre-merger period. …
Fast Poisson Estimation With High-Dimensional Fixed Effects, Sergio Correia, Paulo Guimarães, Thomas Zylkin
Fast Poisson Estimation With High-Dimensional Fixed Effects, Sergio Correia, Paulo Guimarães, Thomas Zylkin
Economics Faculty Publications
In this paper we present ppmlhdfe, a new Stata command for estimation of (pseudo) Poisson regression models with multiple high-dimensional fixed effects (HDFE). Estimation is implemented using a modified version of the iteratively reweighted least-squares (IRLS) algorithm that allows for fast estimation in the presence of HDFE. Because the code is built around the reghdfe package, it has similar syntax, supports many of the same functionalities, and benefits from reghdfe’s fast convergence properties for computing high-dimensional least squares problems. Performance is further enhanced by some new techniques we introduce for accelerating HDFE-IRLS estimation specifically ppmlhdfe also implements a novel and …
