Innovation Dynamics Of Cultural Production: Evidence In Rap Lyrics, James M. Zumel Dumlao, Junjie Lei, Emeka Nwosu, Li Yu Oon, Tsai Ling Jeffrey Wong, James Rising, Jesse Anttila-Hughes May 2020

Innovation Dynamics Of Cultural Production: Evidence In Rap Lyrics, James M. Zumel Dumlao, Junjie Lei, Emeka Nwosu, Li Yu Oon, Tsai Ling Jeffrey Wong, James Rising, Jesse Anttila-Hughes

Master's Theses

Culture is a driving force in organizing the structure of societies, and is conjoined with economic development. However, quantifying the impact of culture is difficult. Culture manifests itself in cultural production, through art, performance, music, etc. Innovation and influence in cultural production industries partially determines product quality. Using techniques from the “digitized humanities”, we agnostically identify informational distance to describe the spatiotemporal dynamics of innovation and influence in Rap music lyrics. Rap emphasizes lyricism and hometown pride more than other genres of popular music, and is interesting as a globally impactful manifestation of the racially segregated labor market in the …

Shutdown Policies And Worldwide Conflict, Nicolas Berman, Mathieu Couttenier, Nathalie Monnet, Rohit Ticku May 2020

Shutdown Policies And Worldwide Conflict, Nicolas Berman, Mathieu Couttenier, Nathalie Monnet, Rohit Ticku

ESI Working Papers

We provide real-time evidence on the impact of Covid-19 restrictions policies on conflicts globally. We use daily information on conflict events and government policy responses to limit the spread of coronavirus to study how conflict levels vary following shutdown and lockdown policies. We use the staggered implementation of restriction policies across countries to identify their effect on conflict incidence and intensity. Our results show that imposing a nation-wide shutdown reduces the likelihood of daily conflict by around 9 percentage points. The reduction is driven by a drop in the incidence of battles, protests and violence against civilians. Across actors the …

Comovement And Instability In Cryptocurrency Markets, Pierangelo De Pace, Jayant Rao May 2020

Comovement And Instability In Cryptocurrency Markets, Pierangelo De Pace, Jayant Rao

Pomona Economics

We analyze the extent of comovement between daily price returns of nine major cryptocurrencies during the first three main phases of their development, from April 2013 to November 2018. We assess its evolution using bivariate and multivariate modelling approaches, and detect pronounced time variation. Generally, comovement is initially low and positive, but increases between early 2017 and late 2018. We then adopt a right-tail version of the Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root test to identify periods of mildly explosive behavior (statistical instability) in the Network Value to Transactions (NVT) ratio (a measure of the dollar value of cryptocurrency transaction activity relative …

Racial Justice Is Climate Justice: Racial Capitalism And The Fossil Economy, Julius Mcgee, Patrick Trent Greiner May 2020

Racial Justice Is Climate Justice: Racial Capitalism And The Fossil Economy, Julius Mcgee, Patrick Trent Greiner

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The narrative of oppression moves through dialectical pressures. Capitalism evolved from the feudal order that preceded it, creating new forms of racial oppression that benefited an emerging ruling class [1]. Racial tensions evolve alongside economic oppression that subjugates labor to capital. The preceding racial order molds to emerging mechanisms of expropriation and exploitation by way of force and resistance. Beneath the surface of these tensions lies the interconnected threads of ecological and human expropriation. At the heart of all oppression, lies the manipulation of reproduction. The social processes necessary to reproduce black and brown communities, the ecological processes necessary to …

Evaluation Of Health Intervention: A Case Of Preschool Children In Egypt, Rania Megally, Hebatallah Ghoneim May 2020

Evaluation Of Health Intervention: A Case Of Preschool Children In Egypt, Rania Megally, Hebatallah Ghoneim

Economics

“Good health and well-being” is the third of the Sustainable Development Goals, but it cannot be achieved without achieving goal two, “No Hunger.” Nutrition status is the foundation for healthy individuals, especially children. Developing countries have to set policies to solve malnutrition in order to ensure better health and well-being. This led the researchers to evaluate the impact of nutrition intervention on health outcomes in preschool children in Egypt, a lower middle-income country with high levels of poverty, food insecurity, and anemia. The prevalence of anemia represents a major public health problem in the country; reaching 39.6%.The analysis is based …

After the reclassification of areas under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to general community quarantine (GCQ), the urgent task for the Philippine government is to provide an exit plan to revive the Philippine economy. Given the significant economic damage resulting from the shutdown of roughly 75 percent of the country’s total production in the National Capital Region (NCR) and in the CALABARZON and Central Luzon areas, a gradual reopening of the economy will be necessary to prevent further economic damage that could not only be difficult to repair, but also long to overcome. Indeed, based on recent directives from the government, …

Female Labor Force Participation And Economic Growth: Granger Causality Test, Zulakha Rahman May 2020

Female Labor Force Participation And Economic Growth: Granger Causality Test, Zulakha Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

Does rising female labor force participation precede economic growth, or does the relationship run in the other direction? This paper addresses this question by performing a Granger causality test to examine the relationship between economic growth and female labor force participation worldwide. The economic growth –is measured in two ways: using Growth Domestic Product, Purchasing Power Parity (constant 2011 international dollar) and Growth Domestic Product using local currency units. The test uses a completely balanced panel dataset spanning over 28 years from 1990 to 2018 and using 151 countries for Purchasing Power Parity dataset and 154 countries in GDP in …

Imitators To Creators: The Emergence Of A Confident National Identity In Contemporary Korea As Observed Through K-Pop And Masculinity, Kaitlyn Diane Read

Honors Theses

South Korea’s national narrative has evolved from one familiar with destruction and outside control to one that can now afford to be more challenging and confrontational. Korea’s ascent to both economic and political prominence on the international landscape in record time is well established. The rapid transformation currently impacts Korean society with the country choosing to concentrate on strengthening its soft power and nation brand exporting. This thesis aims to reveal how Korea’s recently acquired position of significance on the global stage permits the Korean national identity to be assured and stimulating, in contrast with a derivative narrative once perceived …

Currency Internationalization: The Case Of The Rmb, Daniel Powell May 2020

Currency Internationalization: The Case Of The Rmb, Daniel Powell

Business and Economics Honors Papers

Currency internationalization could be considered as one of the primary facets of globalization in the modern world. Today, the US dollar accounts for nearly eighty-five percent of all global transactions, both in trade and finance. However, as China’s power has risen in the past few decades, many have pondered whether the Chinese currency, the RenMinBi (RMB), can internationalize. This study examines the literature on what components create an international currency. Then, we examine the characteristics of China’s financial markets and international relations to become familiar with the scholarly discourse surrounding China’s financial markets, international influence, and monetary stability. We then …

The Evolution Of Local Labor Markets After Recessions, Brad J. Hershbein, Bryan A. Stuart May 2020

The Evolution Of Local Labor Markets After Recessions, Brad J. Hershbein, Bryan A. Stuart

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper studies how U.S. local labor markets respond to employment losses that occur during recessions. Following recessions from 1973 through 2009, we find that areas that lose more jobs during the recession experience persistent relative declines in employment and population. Most importantly, these local labor markets also experience persistent decreases in the employment-population ratio, earnings per capita, and earnings per worker. Our results imply that limited population responses result in longer-lasting consequences for local labor markets than previously thought, and that recessions are followed by persistent reallocation of employment across space.

Is Tuition Free College The Golden Ticket? A Time Series Analysis Of Germany’S Higher Education Policy, 1990-2017, Hannah Wolfram May 2020

Is Tuition Free College The Golden Ticket? A Time Series Analysis Of Germany’S Higher Education Policy, 1990-2017, Hannah Wolfram

Business and Economics Honors Papers

Countries which have been able to offer free tertiary education are being applauded while the United States tries to find a way to rectify its high tertiary education costs. Germany has accomplished a system of subsidized higher education since the 1950s, making it seem highly successful. In order to investigate the potential benefits of subsidized higher education, this study uses a time series regression analysis to investigate the relationship between tertiary unemployment rate and public spending as a share of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Germany over the period 1990-2017. The regression analysis corrected for multi-collinearity and serial correlation, …

Consumer Response To Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) At Bridgewater College, Abenezer Tekle May 2020

Consumer Response To Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) At Bridgewater College, Abenezer Tekle

Honors Projects

With the development of multinational companies (MNCs), corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a very important component of corporate strategic plan. This study provides preliminary evidence that consumer response about the CSR behavior of Multinational Corporation are determined by different factors. In order to identify and measure the effects of CSR behavior on consumer response, I used quantitative research by creating an online survey to analyze three objectives. Nike was specifically included in the survey due to its popularity on college campuses. The results show that knowledge/awareness of CSR have some meaningful influence on millennial purchasing behavior; however, extensive student …

Adolescent Health, Future Outcomes, And Mechanisms Linking Health And Education, Nannan Peng May 2020

Adolescent Health, Future Outcomes, And Mechanisms Linking Health And Education, Nannan Peng

Behavioral and Computational Economics (MS) Theses

Even though the relationship between the health of infants/children and future outcomes has been established in many studies, little evidence has shown the impact of adolescent health. We extend the literature by exploiting the data from Add Health. We show that poor adolescent health has a significantly negative influence on adulthood outcomes. Among the health problems, mental illnesses have significantly persistent effects. Though specific diagnoses can predict general health measure, they are to some extent independent. We further explore the mediators linking health measures and educational attainment. The validity and effect size of the hypothesized mediators are also tested.

Colonial Legacies And Institutional Legitimacy: Explaining Variation In State-Level Informal Economy Size, Makayla Barker May 2020

Colonial Legacies And Institutional Legitimacy: Explaining Variation In State-Level Informal Economy Size, Makayla Barker

Political Science Honors Projects

Abstract: Why are some states’ economies more formal than others? This question has critical significance for policy-makers who endeavor to tap into the reservoir of tax revenue and entrepreneurship that informal economies contain. More importantly, large informal economies inhibit public good provision and perpetuate the impoverishment, marginaliza- tion, and political instability of select communities. Despite major variation in the size of informal economies across states, most scholarship on the informal economy concentrates only on the causes and consequences of the phenomenon, while neglecting to address its variation. This thesis builds on a canon of scholarship surrounding colonial legacies, new- institutional …

An Econometric Analysis Of Bilateral Import Demand In South Africa, Christopher Smith May 2020

An Econometric Analysis Of Bilateral Import Demand In South Africa, Christopher Smith

Dissertations

One of the most significant challenges facing any society is the allocation of scarce economic resources that have alternative uses. Though imports can streamline the allocation of scarce resources in an economy, the potency of a country’s import policies are subject to the magnitude of import elasticities with respect to income, domestic prices, foreign prices, and exchange rates. This research estimates the bilateral income, domestic price, import price, and exchange rate elasticities between South Africa and its five largest trading partners: China, Germany, the United States, India, and Saudi Arabia using quarterly data from 1998 – 2017. The bounds testing …

Commonsense Explanations Of Sparsity, Zipf Law, And Nash's Bargaining Solution, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Kittawit Autchariyapanitkul

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

As econometric models become more and more accurate and more and more mathematically complex, they also become less and less intuitively clear and convincing. To make these models more convincing, it is desirable to supplement the corresponding mathematics with commonsense explanations. In this paper, we provide such explanation for three economics-related concepts: sparsity (as in LASSO), Zipf's Law, and Nash's bargaining solution.

How Often Does Active Learning Actually Occur? Perception Versus Reality, Brandon J. Sheridan, Ben O. Smith May 2020

How Often Does Active Learning Actually Occur? Perception Versus Reality, Brandon J. Sheridan, Ben O. Smith

Economics Faculty Publications

I. Measuring Active and Passive Learning
There is now a robust literature touting the benefits of various active learning techniques relative to passive learning pedagogy such as lecturing (e.g., Freeman et al. 2014, Emerson and English 2016, Swoboda and Feiler 2016, Caviglia-Harris 2016). However, recent studies suggest that lecturing is still the dominant pedagogical choice in economics, even though most instructors believe that active learning methods are superior (Goffe and Kauper 2014, Watts and Schaur 2011). A limitation of these studies is that estimates of passive and active learning are based on instructors’ subjective, self-reported data.

Millennials And The Alcohol Industry: Expenditure Variations Among Generations, Anthony Murray May 2020

Millennials And The Alcohol Industry: Expenditure Variations Among Generations, Anthony Murray

Honors Projects in Economics

This paper explores the relationship age cohorts, or generations, have had with regards to alcohol expenditure over time. Articles from popular publications such as Business Insider claim Millennials are “killing” the alcohol industry due to their lack of consumption (Taylor, 2017), but provide little empirical analysis of any academic rigor to make such claims. These claims do matter, as they have implications for the alcohol industry itself as well as investors, law enforcement, the healthcare industry, and policy makers. This paper uses four cross-sectional decadal datasets spanning from 1986 to 2016 from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer …

University President's Gender And Graduation Rates, Alex Drezek May 2020

University President's Gender And Graduation Rates, Alex Drezek

Honors Projects in Economics

Graduation rates have increasingly become a key metric that institutions use to measure their success. This study looks at the potential relationship between the gender of a university’s president and graduation rates. A dataset was created compiling the gender and tenure of presidents and the characteristics and graduation rates of 4-year institutions in New England. Three separate regression models were created to analyze the data. The variables with the strongest positive relationship to graduation rates are: grade point average (GPA), expected future earnings of students, expenditures made by the institution, and the proportion of full-time faculty employed. The variables with …

The Nebraska Economy Responds To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Eric Thompson May 2020

The Nebraska Economy Responds To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Eric Thompson

Business in Nebraska

The Nebraska economy will contract in 2020 but the rate of decline will not be as rapid as nationwide. The economic structure of Nebraska is more focused on production and transportation than the national economy and less focused on hard-hit industries such as hospitality, entertainment, automobile parts and assembly, and oil production. Nebraska also may benefit from a higher quality workforce, which is better able to adapt to changing economic conditions.

Employment will drop by 2.4% in Nebraska in 2020, much less than the national rate of decline. Employment will rebound by 2.0% in 2021 and 1.4% in 2022. With …

The Impact Of Oil Rent, Currency Overvaluation, And Institution Quality, On Economic Growth Of Oil-Rich Countries: A Heterogeneous Panel Data Study, Alireza Motameni May 2020

The Impact Of Oil Rent, Currency Overvaluation, And Institution Quality, On Economic Growth Of Oil-Rich Countries: A Heterogeneous Panel Data Study, Alireza Motameni

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

This paper investigates several key challenges faced by oil-rich countries regarding their economic growth and development. First, it discusses how to determine currency overvaluation for these countries (if any). To determine the overvaluation, the real exchange rate (RER) is calculated and the Balassa–Samuelson effect is estimated via a regression model. Next, the study presents an empirical model for assessing the impact of oil rent on economic growth in the context of currency overvaluation and the institutional quality in every country. As a dynamic model, both endogeneity and heterogeneity are expected across cross-sections because countries are different in culture, customs, and …

The Effect Of Oil Price On Economic Growth In Lebanon: A Markov-Switching Approach, Işıl Akgül, Kenan Lopcu May 2020

The Effect Of Oil Price On Economic Growth In Lebanon: A Markov-Switching Approach, Işıl Akgül, Kenan Lopcu

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

This paper investigates the regime changes in the Lebanese economy using Markov Switching Auto Regressive models. Using the industrial production index and various variables, including oil prices, we identify two distinct regimes. The findings reveal that the Lebanese growth cycles are largely driven by seasonal effects and random shocks. The findings also indicate that the average duration of the instable and slow growth regime is much longer than that of the expansion and high growth regime. Finally, the probabilities of switching from one regime to another are rather very low but nearly zero for switching from the instable slow growth …

Export Sophistication For Mena Countries, Erhan Aslanoğlu, Oral Erdoğan, Pınar Deniz May 2020

Export Sophistication For Mena Countries, Erhan Aslanoğlu, Oral Erdoğan, Pınar Deniz

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

Economic development is the process of structural transformation as countries’ economic structure diversify from agriculture and manufacturing to service sector. In order to ensure this transformation, and hence, stable growth, economies should upgrade their productive structure, moving from lower to higher value-added products. Developing countries may use the advantage of being the follower, i.e., learning know-how and spillover effects to transform the production facility to higher sophistication levels. Open economic structure further increases diffusion of technology from the developed world. However, exporting more sophisticated products is another level together with the competition in the global markets. Specialization on some specific …
