Elite Influence On Climate Change Skepticism: Evidence From Close Gubernatorial Elections, Andrew G. Meyer Jul 2019

Elite Influence On Climate Change Skepticism: Evidence From Close Gubernatorial Elections, Andrew G. Meyer

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Many theorize that public opinion follows political elite on climate change skepticism, yet evidence of a causal link is lacking. I use a regression discontinuity design to establish the impact of the political party of a governor on constituents’ global warming beliefs. I find that, relative to the election of a Democratic governor, the election of a Republican governor significantly decreases the probability of a Republican constituent believing in global warming by approximately 11–15 percentage points; there is no significant impact on Democratic constituents. I also find a negative effect of a Republican governor on belief in human-caused global warming …

Pengaruh Dwelling Time Pada Penerimaan Pajak Impor Di Indonesia, Adam Syaiful Hilal, Vera Lisna Jul 2019

Pengaruh Dwelling Time Pada Penerimaan Pajak Impor Di Indonesia, Adam Syaiful Hilal, Vera Lisna

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

High dwelling time in Indonesia has been in the spotlight of President since his visit to the Port of Tanjung Priok in 2014. This could bring impact on international trade, one of which is indicated by import tax revenue. The value of import in Indonesia which continues to fall has brought impact to lower country revenue from import tax. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of dwelling time on import tax revenue in Indonesia. The results from recursive equation system of Error Correction Model (ECM) by using data during January 2014 to November 2016 show that …

“Tahukah Kamu?”: Analisis Set Data Survei Sosial Ekonomi Nasional (Susenas), Meliyanni Johar, Prastuti Soewondo, Retno Pujisubekti, Harsa Kunthara Satrio, Ardi Adji, Iqbal Dawam Wibisono

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Susenas has been the backbone of many scientific research and public policies in Indonesia since 1960s. Nonetheless, some of its features have not been clearly conveyed and understood. We highlight two features that often lead to misinterpretation. First, the expenditure variable in Susenas does not measure private outlay but household’s consumption because it includes external assistance. Incomes of households which receive many assistances therefore are overestimated. Second, a sudden change in questionnaire since 2015 may disrupt trend analysis. Specifically for health items, this abrupt change coincides with any change stimulated by a new health initiative introduced by the Central Government.

Inklusi Keuangan Melalui Program Layanan Keuangan Digital Dan Laku Pandai, Prani Sastiono, Chaikal Nuryakin

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This study aims to analyse the inclusion rate of two programs, namely Layanan Keuangan Digital (LKD) and Laku Pandai. We found that inclusion rate of LKD program and Laku Pandai program are 28% and 43% respectively when we define inclusion as use of service (access inclusion). However, the rate falls to 5% and 25% respectively when we define inclusion as account ownership. Laku Pandai program has advantages in increasing financial access of people who live in rural area, have low education, and generate low income. We also found that knowledge/certainty in transaction costs (for LKD) and size of access …

Transparency And Dealer Networks: Evidence From The Initiation Of Post-Trade Reporting In The Mortgage Backed Security Market, Paul Schultz, Zhaogang Song Jul 2019

Transparency And Dealer Networks: Evidence From The Initiation Of Post-Trade Reporting In The Mortgage Backed Security Market, Paul Schultz, Zhaogang Song

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine the introduction of mandatory post-trade reporting in the To-Be-Announced mortgage-backed securities market. With post-trade reporting, trading costs fell for institutional investors. Trading costs declined more for investors’ trades with peripheral dealers than for their trades with core dealers. Peripheral dealers’ market share dropped after the introduction of post-trade reporting, suggesting that opacity was protecting inefficient high-cost dealers. Interdealer trades and volume declined as transparency made it easier to find natural counterparties. Relationships between dealers became less important and, after controlling for the number of trades, dealers used more counterparties in interdealer trades.

The Effect Of Social Information In The Dictator Game With A Taking Option, Tanya O'Garra, Valerio Capraro, Praveen Kujal Jul 2019

The Effect Of Social Information In The Dictator Game With A Taking Option, Tanya O'Garra, Valerio Capraro, Praveen Kujal

ESI Working Papers

We experimentally study how redistribution choices are affected by positive and negative information regarding the behaviour of a previous participant in a dictator game with a taking option. We use the strategy method to identify behavioural ‘types’, and thus distinguish ‘conformists’ from ‘counter-conformists’, and unconditional choosers. Unconditional choosers make up the greatest proportion of types (about 80%) while only about 20% of subjects condition their responses to social information. We find that both conformity and counter-conformity are driven by a desire to be seen as moral (the ‘symbolization’ dimension of moral identity). The main difference is that, conformity is also …

Cournot Marked The Turn From Classical To Neoclassical Thinking, Vernon L. Smith, Sabiou M. Inoua Jul 2019

Cournot Marked The Turn From Classical To Neoclassical Thinking, Vernon L. Smith, Sabiou M. Inoua

ESI Working Papers

For classical economists, markets served the highest value buyers without anyone in the market needing to know that it was possible to write aggregate buyer reservation prices in the form, D = F (p). Cournot, thereby launched neoclassical economics as modelling and thinking of economic action in terms of their outcome effects, rather than their roots in human experience.

Classical Economics: Lost And Found, Sabiou M. Inoua, Vernon Smith Jul 2019

Classical Economics: Lost And Found, Sabiou M. Inoua, Vernon Smith

ESI Working Papers

"We argue that neoclassical value theory suffers from a more basic and serious logical indeterminacy, which is inherent in the axiom of price-taking behavior, and which renders price dynamics indeterminate before inquiring as to its stability. If everyone in the economy takes price as given, whence come these prices? Who is giving these prices? Jevons avoided the indeterminacy by assuming that people must have complete information on supply and demand, and the consequent equilibrium prices—‘perfect competition.’ Walras in effect imported an external agent who found the prices by trial-and-error-correction (the Walrasian Auctioneer). Paradoxically, both approaches had the potential better to …

Policy Effectiveness And Capacity: Two Sides Of The Design Coin, Ishani Mukherjee, Azad S. Bali Jul 2019

Policy Effectiveness And Capacity: Two Sides Of The Design Coin, Ishani Mukherjee, Azad S. Bali

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Policy capacity and effectiveness are two themes that have opened new pathways for academic and empirical enquiry throughout the policy sciences. In the contemporary discourse of policy design, effectiveness has taken on a more foundational meaning that goes beyond what is understood as only the attainment of specific policy goals. Rather, it has come to occupy a central position in the study of policy design, signifying the broader logic of deliberate policy action used to articulate policy problems and present alternative ways of addressing them. Effectiveness thus signals both effectual processes as well as successful policy outcomes. However, what constitutes …

Tail Risk Concerns Everywhere, George P. Gao, Xiaomeng Lu, Zhaogang Song Jul 2019

Tail Risk Concerns Everywhere, George P. Gao, Xiaomeng Lu, Zhaogang Song

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We show that the beta with respect to an index of global ex ante tail risk concerns (ℝ), which we construct using out-of-the-money options on multiple global assets, negatively drives cross-sectional return variations across asset classes, including international equity indices, foreign currencies, and government bond futures. The pricing power of ℝ becomes stronger when more asset-class-level tail risk concerns are incorporated in the index construction. ℝ also dominates asset-class-level tail risk concerns in pricing assets within each asset class. These evidences imply that the pricing effect of tail risk concerns works predominantly as a global channel. The ℝ pricing effect …

Equivalence Of Stochastic And Deterministic Mechanisms, Yi-Chun Chen, Jiangtao Li, Jiangtao Li, Yeneng Sun Jul 2019

Equivalence Of Stochastic And Deterministic Mechanisms, Yi-Chun Chen, Jiangtao Li, Jiangtao Li, Yeneng Sun

Research Collection School Of Economics

We consider a general social choice environment that has multiple agents, a finite set of alternatives, independent types, and atomless type distribution. We show that for any Bayesian incentive compatible mechanism, there exists an equivalent deterministic mechanism that (1) is Bayesian incentive compatible; (2) delivers the same interim expected allocation probabilities and the same interim expected utilities for all agents; and (3) delivers the same ex ante expected social surplus. This result holds in settings with a rich class of utility functions, multidimensional types, interdependent valuations, and in settings without monetary transfers. To prove our result, we develop a novel …

Limit Theory For Moderate Deviation From Integrated Garch Processes, Yubo Tao Jul 2019

Limit Theory For Moderate Deviation From Integrated Garch Processes, Yubo Tao

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops the limit theory of the GARCH(1,1) process that moderately deviates from IGARCH process towards both stationary and explosive regimes. The asymptotic theory extends Berkes et al. (2005) by allowing the parameters to have a slower rate of convergence. The results can be applied to unit root test for processes with mildly-integrated GARCH innovations (e.g. Boswijk (2001), Cavaliere and Taylor (2007, 2009)) and deriving limit theory of estimators for models involving mildly-integrated GARCH processes (e.g. Jensen and Rahbek (2004), Francq and Zakoïan (2012, 2013).

Random Mechanism Design On Multidimensional Domains, Shurojit Chatterji, Huaxia Zeng Jul 2019

Random Mechanism Design On Multidimensional Domains, Shurojit Chatterji, Huaxia Zeng

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study random mechanism design in an environment where the set of alternatives has a Cartesian product structure. We first show that all generalized random dictatorships are strategy-proof on a minimally rich domain if and only if the domain is a top-separable domain. We next generalize the notion of connectedness (Monjardet, 2009) to establish a particular class of top-separable domains: connected domains, and show that in the class of minimally rich and connected domains, the multidimensional single-peakedness restriction is necessary and sufficient for the design of a flexible random social choice function that is unanimous and strategy-proof. Such a flexible …

Improved Marginal Likelihood Estimation Via Power Posteriors And Importance Sampling, Yong Li, Nianling Wang, Jun Yu Jul 2019

Improved Marginal Likelihood Estimation Via Power Posteriors And Importance Sampling, Yong Li, Nianling Wang, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

The power-posterior method of Friel and Pettitt (2008) has been used to estimate the marginal likelihoods of competing Bayesian models. In this paper it is shown that the Bernstein-von Mises (BvM) theorem holds for the power posteriors under regularity conditions. Due to the BvM theorem, the power posteriors, when adjusted by the square root of the corresponding grid points, converge to the same normal distribution as the original posterior distribution, facilitating the implementation of importance sampling for the purpose of estimating the marginal likelihood. Unlike the power-posterior method that requires repeated posterior sampling from the power posteriors, the new method …

A Quantile-Based Asset Pricing Model, Tomohiro Ando, Jushan Bai, Mitohide Nishimura, Jun Yu Jul 2019

A Quantile-Based Asset Pricing Model, Tomohiro Ando, Jushan Bai, Mitohide Nishimura, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

It is well-known that the standard estimators of the risk premium in asset pricing models are biased when some price factors are omitted. To address this problem, we propose a novel quantile-based asset pricing model and a new estimation method. Our new asset pricing model allows for the risk premium to be quantile-dependent and our estimation method is applicable to models with unobserved factors. It avoids biased estimation results and always ensures a positive risk premium. The method is applied to the U.S., Japan, and U.K. stock markets. The empirical analysis demonstrates the clear benefits of our approach.

Estimating Proportion Of Noise Traders And Asset Prices, Mirza Faizan Ahmed Jul 2019

Estimating Proportion Of Noise Traders And Asset Prices, Mirza Faizan Ahmed

Business Review

This paper provides empirical evidence of the presence, proportion and trading behavior of noise traders in the U.S. equity market (S&P500 index). A simple methodology is used to estimate the heterogeneous agent asset pricing model involving noise traders’ risk, through GMM. Departing from previous estimations of heterogeneous agent models, it estimates fundamental price using the consumption-based asset pricing model and noise traders’ misperception as deviation from this price. It concludes that noise traders exist in the S&P500, they exaggerate price expectations as compared to fundamental traders, and traders (or investors) are rational, on average.

Board Structure And Dividend Smoothing: A Case Of Pakistani Listed Firms, Zahid Ali, Assad Ullah, Arshad Ali

Business Review

The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the effects of ownership and board structure on dividend smoothing for listed non-financial firms for the period 2005-2015 on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) in the light of agency and information asymmetry theory. Two measures, speed of adjustment and relative volatility are used to estimate dividend smoothing. Tobit regression is used for analyzing the effects of board structure on dividend smoothing measured via speed of adjustment while OLS is used for relative volatility. Additionally, the study applies the technique of principal component analysis (PCA) for board index. The results reveal that …

Panel Threshold Regressions With Latent Group Structures, Ke Miao, Liangjun Su, Wendun Wang Jul 2019

Panel Threshold Regressions With Latent Group Structures, Ke Miao, Liangjun Su, Wendun Wang

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper, we consider the least squares estimation of a panel structure threshold re-gression (PSTR) model where both the slope coefficients and threshold parameters may exhibit latent group structures. We study the asymptotic properties of the estimators of the latent group structure and the slope and threshold coefficients. We show that we can estimate the latent group structure correctly with probability approaching 1 and the estimators of the slope and threshold coefficients are asymptotically equivalent to the infeasible estimators that are obtained as if the true group structures were known. We study likelihood-ratio-based inferences on the group-specific threshold parameters …

Essays On Asymmetric Contests And Urbanization In India, Pulkit K. Nigam Jul 2019

Essays On Asymmetric Contests And Urbanization In India, Pulkit K. Nigam

Theses and Dissertations

I study asymmetric all-pay auction contests where the prize has the same value for all players, but players might have different cost functions. I allow for the cost functions to be discontinuous as long as they are right-continuous. In that setting, I determine sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of the conventional mixed-strategy equilibrium. Employing this framework, I discuss the implementation of a soft cap on bids and the effect that has on the conventional mixed-strategy equilibrium and players’ bidding behavior, especially with respect to a situation where there is no cap on bids. I also determine the total cost …

Three Essays In The Economics Of Crime, Robert W. Pettis Jul 2019

Three Essays In The Economics Of Crime, Robert W. Pettis

Theses and Dissertations

I examine the effects of three different policies on crime related outcomes. First, I consider whether access to mental health care effects crime rates. In particular, I consider whether the effect on arrest rates of increasing access to mental health care for those that already have private insurance by exploiting the state and time variation in the adoption of mental health parity mandates. I find no evidence to suggest that even the most far-reaching of these mandates are effective at curbing crime. I also follow up on prior studies, applying this approach to determine the effect on suicide rates. I …

Key Factors In Implementing Knowledge Management System Based On Project Management (Case Study Pusilkom Ui), Fikri Akbarsyah Anza

Jurnal Administrasi Bisnis Terapan

Digital transformation in every public sector (E-government) already happened this past year. Though, from many IT Projects that previously ran, in average only 15% projects that can be said succeed. Many projects that failed caused by bad strategic and planning, bad management of human resources, lack of technological preparation, lousy implementation without proper preparation and proper acceptance testing. IT Projects are very costly, so we need to handle those problems with appropriate project management. One of the best ways to realize appropriate project management is using a project management system that can utilize proper knowledge management as well. Using post-positivism …

Europe's (Lack Of) Welfare Chauvinism: Evidence From Surveys And Spending, Ethan Davis Jun 2019

Europe's (Lack Of) Welfare Chauvinism: Evidence From Surveys And Spending, Ethan Davis

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Immigration’s effect on European welfare states is complicated. On one hand, increased immigration might undermine social solidarity and impose greater fiscal burdens on redistribution, reducing support for welfare spending. On the other, natives could respond to greater globalization with economic anxiety, increasing support for redistribution in order to mitigate risk. Welfare chauvinism predicts a mixed effect—increased spending for programs that middle-class natives use and reduced spending for programs that benefit immigrants disproportionately. I test this theory by analyzing (1) European attitudes towards immigration and welfare spending and (2) actual spending on these programs, particularly social housing. Additionally, I present a …
