Education is considered one of the most important tools for success in the labor market. The benefits of education extend to multiple other externalities. However, access to education is not universal even within the same school, county, and state. This dissertation includes three different essays which looks at the literature on intervention programs, an intervention program to increase access to post secondary education, and impact of education on crime. "We appreciate Ocobock's interest in methodological rigor. We largely agree with her commentary, which suggests that departures from standard protocols might have contributed to the high resting metabolic rate (RMR) measured for Tsimane. Indeed, our paper acknowledges many of the key departures from gold-standard indirect calorimetry methods of RMR assessment and attempts to adjust for several of these (Gurven et al., 2016). Bringing standard clinical methods into remote field settings often involves certain compromises, especially in our case, where RMR measurement was just one component of a large-scale health and aging project (Gurven et al., 2017). This study assesses the consumer response to changes in entrance fees at 27 of the United States National Park System sites over the past 25 years. The elasticity of demand portion of this study analyzes the relationship between monthly attendance and per-vehicle entrance fees charged at each of the 27 national parks from 1993 to the present. Although this study finds no statistically significant correlation between attendance and admission price from 1993-2006, it does identify a significant negative correlation over the past twelve years. This study also identifies varying responses to changes in admission price by different socioeconomic demographic groups. …

This paper examines the question of what impact federal R&D spending has on patent registration and future technological innovation. Because the causal relationship between federal R&D and patent grants is difficult to determine given aggregate trends and endogeneity, I use the sharp changes in NASA R&D funding between 1959 and 1975 as an interrupted time series. These unique circumstances, caused by the Space Race, make this time period a valuable event study in which to consider the impact of federal R&D. 1,996 unique patents granted to NASA and NASA-affiliates are considered, as well as an additional 19,845 unique patents which …

This inquiry seeks to establish the importance of "vested interests" as introduced and relied upon within Thorstein Veblen’s system of reasoning. Veblen considers vested interests from two different perspectives in his 1919 book The Vested Interests and the Common Man. First, Veblen considers the relationships between vested interests and what he terms “the business enterprise”. Veblen takes a historical view, relating vested interests to lingering laws and customs of an old era that continue to be applied in modern times. While historians often point to the rise of the United States as a major global player and technological leader on the world stage in the 1890s and early 1900s, this study argues it was the 1850s, not the 1890s, that this transition occurred. It utilizes transnational methodologies to analyze European perceptions of the United States, American international businessmen, and new ways Americans thought and talked about their place in the world. Between 1890 and the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, nations on both sides of the Atlantic attempted to gain prestige by building the world's greatest steamships for their merchant marines. In 1901, the United States entered this competition with the advent of J.P. Morgan's International Mercantile Marine, which built on the previous work of shipping magnate Clement Griscom. This project will explore why and how Morgan built his monopoly and the implications and repercussions this project had for both Atlantic shipping and U.S. foreign relations. The market value of agricultural land in Nebraska declined by three percent over the prior year to an average of $2,650 per acre according to the 2019 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey (Figure 1 and Table 1). This marks the fifth consecutive year of downward pressure as market values have dropped approximately 20 percent since reaching a high of $3,315 in 2014.

While athletic success may improve the visibility of a university to prospective students and thereby benefit the school, it may also increase risky behavior in the current student body. Using the Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study, we find that a school's participation in the NCAA Basketball Tournament is associated with a 47% increase in binge drinking by male students at that school. Additionally, we find evidence that drunk driving increases by 5% among all students during the tournament. (JEL I12, I23, Z28)

The Shapley distance is introduced as a measure of the extent to which output sharing among the stakeholders of an organization can be considered unfair. In fact, it measures the distance between an arbitrary pay profile and the Shapley pay profile under a given technology, the latter profile defining the fair distribution. Therefore, this chapter contributes to the literature that studies economic inequality using game theory. In particular, we provide an axiomatic characterization to a notion of unfairness, namely the Shapley distance, and show that it can be used to determine the outcome of an underlying bargaining process. The axioms of expected utility and discounted utility theory have been tested extensively. In contrast, the axioms of social welfare functions have only been tested in a few questionnaire studies involving choices between hypothetical income distributions. In this note, we conduct a controlled experiment with 100 subjects in the role of social planners that tests five fundamental properties of social welfare functions to provide a basic test of cardinal social choice theory. We find that four properties of the standard social welfare functions tested are systematically violated, producing an Allais paradox, a common ratio effect, a framing effect, and a …

Parents co-signing loans for their children is common in agriculture. This usually happens when the child needs a loan to purchase land, livestock, or farm equipment. Lenders are more willing to make the loan to a beginning producer if the parents co-sign. This means the parents promise to repay the loan if the younger producer cannot. Many schools in large urban districts have more applicants than seats. Centralized school assignment algorithms ration seats at over-subscribed schools using randomly assigned lottery numbers, non-lottery tie-breakers like test scores, or both. The New York City public high school match illustrates the latter, using test scores and other criteria to rank applicants at \screened” schools, combined with lottery tie-breaking at unscreened \lottery” schools. We show how to identify causal effects of school attendance in such settings. Diewert (2015) reworked Tang and Wang’s (2004) growth decomposition and claimed that: “Thus even if all industry labor productivity levels remain constant and all labor input shares remain constant, economy wide labor productivity growth can change due to changes in industry real output prices (italics added)” (p. 370). However, contrary to his 2015 claim, Diewert (2016) found “puzzling” results from Australian data where the sum of price change effects across industries did not matter much and explained this puzzle by an approximation formula that showed price effects sum to zero with the first-order accuracy. The Consumer Confidence Index – Nebraska (CCI-N) stood at 103.2 in February, above the neutral value of 100 and just below the value of 104.0 in January 2019. The Business Confidence Index – Nebraska (BCI-N) stood at 108.2 in February, well above the neutral level and up from 107.4 in January. When asked about the most important issue facing their business, 29 percent of respondents chose customer demand while 27 mentioned the quality and availability of labor and 13 percent mentioned competition from other businesses. An extraction of default factors from cross-sectional credit default swap (CDS) curves allows us to analyze the shape and the dynamics of default probabilities. Following a two-region border effect model with consumption preference of local governments, this article examines the segmentation of the Chinese domestic market as well as its determinants. Through empirical tests, we find that the average border effect of domestic trade among provinces in China showed an upward trend from 1997–2002 and 2002–2010. The significant difference of border effects between western and eastern areas of China indicate more regional trade barriers in the western areas than in the eastern areas. The producer services sector, which includes professional and technical services such as accounting, engineering, computer programming, advertising and consulting, is the fastest growing, high-wage segment of the U.S. economy. Producer services employment grew by 15 percent nationwide from 2008 through 2017 but only by 5 percent in Nebraska. Nebraska growth lagged the nation in part because the state has smaller metropolitan areas. Producer service businesses tend to congregate in larger cities.
