This trend has led many states to reevaluate mandatory vehicle safety inspection programs. This study sought to answer the question, does the elimination of vehicle safety inspections have an effect on traffic fatalities?

Family Feud Ends Up In Court, J. David Aiken May 2017

Family Feud Ends Up In Court, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

A May 2017 decision by the Nebraska Court of Appeals deals with an unfortunately common situation in Nebraska family farm corporations– is the on-farm heir (or heirs) in charge of the corporation legally required to share the corporation’s income with the off-farm heirs? (24 Neb. App. 649) As we shall see, the court answered “no” even though that seems to be an unfair result.

The Dream Act: A Retrospective On Immigration Policies Across Time And Nations, Ernest M. Oleksy May 2017

The Dream Act: A Retrospective On Immigration Policies Across Time And Nations, Ernest M. Oleksy

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

The United States has a long tradition of assimilating diverse peoples into a shared culture and thus developing a transformative, holistic national identity. Despite this historical affinity for immigration, there have also been points during which rose issues with migrants entering the country illegally. Once this happens, politicians must decide how to deal with an influx of undocumented aliens. This paper focuses on amnesty acts, particularly ones past through the American Congress in the past century. The relationship between amnesty legislation and immigration flow will be investigated. Also, an exploration of European policies towards immigration will all be conducted in …

How We Think About Economics, Bart J. Wilson May 2017

How We Think About Economics, Bart J. Wilson

ESI Publications

"From my casual observation, many economists were surprised at the content of Vernon's Nobel lecture on ecological and constructivist rationality in economics. Having been awarded the prize 'for having established laboratory experiments as a tool in empirical economic analysis, especially in the study of alternative market mechanisms,' I think many expected him to catalogue the major findings of experimental economics in his prize lecture. David Porter has described Vernon as a live, interactive version of the Journal of Economic Literature. But Vernon Smith is no cataloguer. He is a synthesizer, and he synthesizes acutely aware that scientific inquiry is …

Community Benefits Spending By Private Tax-Exempt Hospitals In The U.S., Wael Elrayes

Theses & Dissertations

The Internal Revenue Service issued the long awaited regulatory guidelines for the Community Benefits (CB) spending for private tax-exempt hospitals in December 2008, which required these hospitals to report their policies, practices, and spending on CB activities. The Affordable Care Act amended these rules in 2010 by adding a section on Community Health Needs Assessment.

This study evaluates and tracks spending on the total and different CB activities by all private tax-exempt hospitals in seven states after the implementation of the latest IRS and ACA reporting regulations from 2010 - 2013. Moreover, this study investigates which community health indicators are …

Consumer Gasoline Prices In 2014: What Caused The Decline?, Travis A. Spillum May 2017

Consumer Gasoline Prices In 2014: What Caused The Decline?, Travis A. Spillum

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Though a large body of literature analyzes commodity markets in general as well as the crude oil market, little work looks at the determinants of gasoline price shocks and which variables contributed to specific historical shocks. Using a structural vector autoregression (SVAR) model, one can determine how gasoline prices typically respond to shocks in price determinants, how much each variable, on average, contributes to the variation in gasoline, and which variables influenced gasoline prices during particular shocks. This paper proposes a simple SVAR model of the gasoline market and uses the model to determine what caused gasoline prices to decline …

Jenny Slater, Youth And Disability - A Challenge To Mr. Reasonable (2015), Murad Canbulut

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

As Dholakia and Atik (2016) emphasize in the opening article of MGDR, we can “live with” labels such as advanced and emerging, rich, mid-income and poor, ancient and modern (and postmodern), Third World and First World. In addition to these labels, this review brings out labels and dualities such as able and disabled, reasonable and unreasonable. Introducing disability studies to the marketing field, this review analyzes Jenny Slater’s book which helps us gain a critical perspective on disability research.

Extending The Marketing Dialog On Poverty, Ravi S. Achrol, Philip Kotler May 2017

Extending The Marketing Dialog On Poverty, Ravi S. Achrol, Philip Kotler

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

We appreciate Professor Aneel Karnani’s contributions to the marketing dialog on poverty and our article “Marketing’s Lost Frontier: The Poor” (Achrol and Kotler 2016). We do not necessarily disagree with some of his criticisms but rather see them as an opportunity for expanding the discussion of marketing’s role in reducing world poverty. In this response, we revisit and elaborate on Social Marketing for the bottom-of-the-pyramid (BOP) and Distributed Production-Consumption view presented in the original article. These new marketing models – focused on distributing economic opportunity, income and standards of life to local communities – can substantially displace the giant centralized …

Marketing And Poverty Alleviation: The Perspective Of The Poor, Aneel Karnani May 2017

Marketing And Poverty Alleviation: The Perspective Of The Poor, Aneel Karnani

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The best way to reduce poverty is to focus on raising the productive capacity – not the consumption capacity – of the poor. This implies poverty reduction efforts must focus on two dimensions: raising income of the poor, and providing the poor access to basic public services (such as public health, education, sanitation, infrastructure and security). First, the best way to raise income is to create employment opportunities for the poor. The private sector is clearly the best engine for job creation; the government can play a useful facilitating role. Second, governments are responsible for, and should be held accountable …

Adam Smith, Market And Social Change: Then And Now, Dominique Bouchet May 2017

Adam Smith, Market And Social Change: Then And Now, Dominique Bouchet

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Adam Smith (1723-1790) provided us with a remarkable synthesis of the economic and political ideas of his time and developed a conceptual system to analyze social interactions that mattered for the wealth of nations. He proposed a radically different roadmap for the future development of the society he lived in. The fact that his original analyses were rooted in a given historical context and were founded on a well thought-through conceptual system should not be ignored. The dribs and drabs of Adam Smith ideas that are bandied about, particularly to support ‘free’ market and anti-regulatory policies, are a far cry …

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon May 2017

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The purpose of this conceptual essay is to challenge the inevitability of living with the destructive beast of speculative market economics in the 4th epoch of global capitalism. We are facing an existential socio-ecological threat from the short-term excesses of financial capitalism, a socially irresponsible form that consumes without producing value and without bearing entrepreneurial risk, benefitting only the few. The fate of roughly 90% of humanity hangs in the balance. The primary contribution of this paper proposes a 5th epoch of capitalism, inspired by Savall and Zardet’s socio-economic and sustainable approach that restores human potential and value …

Tertiary Degrees And The Market: Cross-Country Statistical Evidence, Boontharika Meesuwan May 2017

Tertiary Degrees And The Market: Cross-Country Statistical Evidence, Boontharika Meesuwan

Theses and Dissertations

Substantial differences in stock market behavior exists across the world. Many determinants have been explored and empirically studied, yet the exact reasons for these differences remain unclear. The purpose of this paper is to contribute some insight into the question of why market behavior differs across countries and between social groups despite continuing globalization within financial markets. I hypothesize that there is a direct relationship between personality and trading behavior that directly affects market liquidity.

The Effect Of Mixed Land Use On Residential Home Values In Montgomery County, Victoria M. Sheil May 2017

The Effect Of Mixed Land Use On Residential Home Values In Montgomery County, Victoria M. Sheil

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Mixed land use is the combination of residential and commercial type properties within the same community. In suburban areas, zoning codes maintained separate residential and commercial areas, but recently mixed land use has become more popular. This paper examines the effect of mixed land use on the surrounding residential home values using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression to estimate a housing demand function. The equation is estimated using data for all residential properties in Montgomery County, Maryland assessed for value in 2016. The results indicate that mixed land use may have a negative relationship with residential home value assessments.

Pride And Prejudice In U.S. Trade, Lan Cao May 2017

Pride And Prejudice In U.S. Trade, Lan Cao

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

The purpose of this Article is to provide a micro evaluation of trade in two particularly thorny areas: (1) job loss; and (2) import vs. export and the trade deficit in a trading system of globally fragmented production. This Article also provides a broad, macro view of trade and its relationship with other parts of the international order—security and finance. This is because trade is a vital component of an integrated international system. Looking at trade in isolation will result in even more incoherence and disequilibrium, perhaps creating unintended consequences in ways that impact negatively on U.S. security and finances. …

An Economic Analysis Of What Role Monetary Contributions Play In How A Government Representative Will Vote, Jordan T. Carrier May 2017

An Economic Analysis Of What Role Monetary Contributions Play In How A Government Representative Will Vote, Jordan T. Carrier

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

As a result of polarizing election outcomes, controversial legislative actions, and the general stigma that elected officials are corrupt, many Americans are questioning whether their representatives in government have the best interest of their constituents at heart, or are considering more self-centered motives. One point of contention is that political action committees and lobbyists contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to legislators' campaigns in return for consideration of their viewpoints. This study seeks to determine exactly how much weight members of the House of Representatives give to monetary contributions when considering how to vote on a bill by using voting …

Caught In The Headlights: Revising The Road Kill Hypothesis Of Antebellum Illinois Bank Failures, Scott N. Clayman, Scott Deacle, Andrew J. Economopoulos May 2017

Caught In The Headlights: Revising The Road Kill Hypothesis Of Antebellum Illinois Bank Failures, Scott N. Clayman, Scott Deacle, Andrew J. Economopoulos

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

Illinois had a dismal free banking experience, with over 80% of its free banks failing by the start of the Civil War. Researchers agree that a dramatic change in bond prices was the catalyst, and some have shown that the riskiest banks, ex ante, were the most likely to fail. This study examines how Illinois free banks adjusted their portfolios in the face of increased political and financial risks prior to Abraham Lincoln’s election as president. Lincoln’s nomination in May 1860 and the Democratic Party schism in June 1860 raised the likelihood of secession and the potential for a significant …
